There's a large book fair several times a year here in Canberra, I found out that they let bookstores and on-sellers enter an hour or so prior to the general public so they can just grab large chunks of stock before anyone else, it's really insidious (especially with how sparse the used book options are here)
Goodwill have even gotten in on it. They will pull books and sale them on eBay and other sites verses in their stores for people on a budget could get books they could afford.
good for you... proud of you to stand on your principles... you rock!!!! I sometimes encounter these nastys scanning every book at the thrift stores... just barf and makes me so angry.!
50 dealers out of 81 attendees at a book sale? Public libraries are funded by and for the residents in an area, trying to bring literature within the reach of especially those with less spending money. Therefore ordinary local residents should have first shout at buying the books - as the books were collected FOR THEIR USE in the first place. Book businesses should only get the leftovers.
They’re not even businesses; like Steve said, they’re scummy online resellers who know nothing about books and just want to make a quick profit from them.
I recognized _From Earth to Heaven_ from my own bookshelves. It is a collection of Asimov’s science columns in F&SF from February 1965 to June 1966. I have all 22 of these paperback collections, and I seem to be the only fan of them (alas!). Each essay starts with an anecdote, then slides into a scientific subject and usually its history. I used to take along a collection to read during my occasional bus rides from Owen Sound to Toronto and back. The essay I most clearly remember from this collection is “To Tell a Chemist”, which advises in order to tell a chemist from two imposters, just ask each, “What is a ‘mole’?.” 😀
I have noticed plenty of dealers at the BPL sale but never have I seen it be the majority of the attendees. It’s usually 5 or 6 out of 50+ people, which you know, not good, but I’ve always come out with too many books.
I'm wondering how much dealers have had to do with killing the Planned Parenthood of Mid America book sales. I heartily dislike the insectoid dealers too!
Thank you for saying something. I hope the BPL people can understand that a lot of actual book lovers stay away from the book sales. I stay away from some of the library book sales in suburban Boston for the same reasons. The dealers make it an unpleasant experience, not to mention rude AF because they'll literally cover boxes and tables with cloth.
My Friends of the Library in Lancaster California says NO DEALERS!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Those books are supposed to be an event for readers and book lovers.

Dear BPL please listen to Mr. Donoghue and do as his video suggests.
Sincerely, a book lover.
amen!

It's such a pity that due to parasitic money grabbing dealers, your losing out on the fun of going to a place you obviously enjoy so much.
library book sales used to be so much fun before the dealers with phones/scanners became a thing.

Steve, do you recommend Ratking, the first in Michael Dibdin's Aurelio Zen series?
Book dealers have to be the ones taking all the books from those "Take one, share one" free little libraries. What a bunch of dirtbags.
Who even reads these obscure books!!
And yet, you promote and buy books. In fact, you read paperbacks, saying the paperback will not survive, quite interesting.
Out of curiosity, do you read with a hammer and chisel next to you.
