Most Century Fans have a copyright of 1910 so many of them were made within the next 10 or so years. They are indeed very old fans that were made with great quality, not found in the fans made today.
The top cord is not supposed to wrap around the base. It needs to be unwrapped so the oscillator can work freely. I started working on an Emerson and it's a fun little project.
There is absolutely no way that this fan could chop your finger off. The blades are not sharpened like a razor and the motor probably only puts out about 100 wants of power. I am sure it would stun you and maybe issue a small cut or bruise.

I'm glad you caught it! I drop references to various things all the time but most go unnoticed.
