Broad Airpro Powered Mask Review - Breathe Easier?

  • The Broad Airpro ( ebay.to/2DSnKna ) is an affordable powered face mask. While high-end powered air personal respiration (PAPR) masks (from 3M and the like) cost well over $500, the Broad Airpro is a fraction of the price. There are reasons for that, of course. The Broad Airpro is NOT a professional-level PAPR. It's an inexpensive consumer-grade unit.
A restrictive face mask can cause chest pain. If wearing a conventional N95 or lesser mask causes discomfort, the Broad Airpro is well worth a look.
Props to Broad for quickly sending a new hose to replace the original unit.

With my Broad AirPro, I almost got kicked off a Delta Airlines flight between SLC and SNA. I had no issues from VPS to ATL and ATL to SLC. The stewardess went Karen on me when she saw it. Asking if it was medical, want to know where the exhaust valve was located and I had three Delta personnel ask me where was the valve and if I know if it is on the authorized lists. I was given a paper mask, that clearly will not protect me., to wear if I wanted to fly in the petri dish to SNA. Thank you for your review, I bought this for the flights to protect me from the virus.

TLW Holy Cow, that must’ve been an uncomfortable experience. I’ve worn mine hidden under a bandana for the past few weeks. I’m still looking for the optimal N95 mask to pair it with. Many thanks for sharing!

@@mpgomatic The KN95 is almost the same as the N95..... Keep in mind that the air going in mostly comes through the H13 Hepa filter which is much better than the N95. Just tell the airline that it is a PAPR with no exhaust valve. Your breath goes out through the KN95 filter to protect others from your possible infection if you are asymptomatic...

Thanks for the info. I wondered how airline personnel would respond to the AirPro if they didn't understand how it worked. I thought about bringing a separate mask if I flew. Also, the company Easy Flow makes a nozzle that goes on the end of the hose. The nozzle is flattened and designed to go under a mask instead of through it. I have one of those nozzles and I've used it with the AirPro. I don't like using it like that, but I figure that might draw less attention than something that goes through the mask which would be mistaken for an exhaust.

Good video on the Broad Airpro. From the way I see you tossing things around, I can understand how your tubing breaks as well as your mask straps. You might think of reinforcing your tubing. The braiding material for coolant hoses would work. Another trick is to hang the Airpro upside down so that the tubing hangs straight out of the unit instead of taking an abrupt bend. The whole trick to this solution is a lightweight non-restrictive hose. You can go to a stiffer CPAP hose but it will tug on your mask more when you turn your head. The modification to a bandana will be interesting, but remember that you must still retain an KN95 mask under it. The unit only puts out 2.2 cubic ft of air per minute and if you breath more than that, you will have a safety reserve by breathing through the KN95 filter. Don't count on a bandana alone to be able to filter any viral load. Thanks for the video.

    Nice presentation!
You have to bear in mind though that this is NOT an industrial quality product, hence the low price point. It's consumer grade, but good quality, fit, and finish. You seem to know what an industrial rated sells for, and that's why. Be kind to it. I saw the potential issue with the hose the first time I donned mine, so I took a narrow strip of duct tape and taped the hose to the lanyard about a quarter of the way up. Easy fix. The welding helmet PAPR's start around $1 large. So this is a real bargain. I wear it now instead of a dust mask.

I’ve been using this Broad Airpro and what your stating here hasn’t happened to me. The filter, which is about $5’s, lasts for about 500 hours before it needs changing. I also added a the activated carbon from a PM2.5 filter that I took apart and cut to fit. It works perfecting fine and adds cooling air and it’s easier to breathe through which most mask don’t have. The activated carbon I added was put in the front part where the honeycomb side is on. As for the hose he says broke, maybe it’s because he may have handled it roughly when connecting it on or pulling it off. As he kinda did in this video. Also, the mask ear wrap doesn’t break unless pulled hard off the ear. I too, was looking for a more comfortable, breathable mask that was electric so I bought this. I work for a school district here in So. California and those who know me, bought some also. We have to wear masks all the time and using this one, made it a whole lot easier for us!😃

Thanks for the review. I found your review after I bought an AirPro. I'll keep a close eye on the hose. So far, so good. Mine came with connectors that allow connecting it to any mask after cutting a half inch hole. I've connected it to masks that I like better. Also, I bought a punch for making a clean, circular hole rather than using scissors.
I'm going to buy a second device for a friend. I may get another AirPro. But, I'm evaluating one by Easy Flow. The owner of the company says he invented the device. It can be connected through the mask, but it also has a nozzle that goes UNDER the mask and is held in place by a magnet. I like the fact that it has rounded edges and claims a higher air flow.

Great stuff, Ron! I'm hacking up masks with an X-Acto knife. A punch would be awesome. I need to look at the Easy Flow.

I also bought the same one and I haven’t had any problems. What I did add was a activated carbon from a PM2.5 filter I took apart and cut to fit. I placed it in the honeycomb side as an added safety measure. Here at work, So. California school district, we have to wear a mask. Having this one made it a whole lot easier to use! Some of the stuff also bought some and so far, it’s been working perfect!😃

Thank you for your review. Mine was just delivered and I'm hoping to figure out how to set it all up. This has nothing to do with your review of the product and is just my own personal opinion. I like the front camera angle best. When going back and forth I found myself focused more on the alternating camera angles rather than what you were saying.

I have extensive experience with hepa filters and air quality to save time and money you can vacuum or pressure air blast the filters that’s what we do in industrial environments also I highly suggest purchasing other brands of personal papr style respirators with a silicon mask for seal like a quality silicon seal permanent mask with hose port and a one way check valve I ordered some similar respirators that I’m going to diy together so I got positive clean air pressure in goggles and silicon mask

Thanks, for your review. I bought 2 early August. I find I need more air and would like for air flow into it because I have big lungs...... I have just bought their Airpro Car and gluing an adapter I made to fit the mask tube on it. It blows a lot more at low speed than the mask version does and I power it off a portable USB battery bank that are very common. You can buy replacement tubes for your mask. Maybe you can put it inside a stiffer tube so it doesn't get pulled and twisted to break as easily. Remember, it is a positive air pressure system so as long as you don't breath in more air than it can push, you won't have a problem with some leaking. But I'd be cautious and get another tube or more. I did buy more anyways and consider them as a disposable item like the mask. When I get my airpro car mask finished, I'll likely make a video.

I recently purchased the Air Pro mask because I have asthma and COPD and have to wear a mask to work for up to six hours. I am in love with this mask. I can breathe fresh air constantly. Never have to lift and lower the mask because I’m not able to breathe. I go all day so very comfortable. What a great investment I have made towards being able to get the cool, clean air I need. Great product!

If it contains a HEPA filter it will clean the air of corona! I got one and got rid of the breathing tube and just wear the air purifier on my arm every day. You get ventilation/extra COVID safety wherever you go! I absolutely love it.

Yes the hose is very weak, for the mask try switching it with a 3m 1860 respirator, its firm and much better fitting, just punch a hole like the one that came with the BROAD airpro. Also put a small tywrap around the hose fitting to the mask, mine kept falling off with the slightest pull on the hose.
I dont know if the air filter will provide ANY protection at all for Corona, no certification or test that i know of for viruses nor do they claim its a HEPA filter.. I have a hard time breathing without a mask so at least this is a way to have something on in public Good luck to all , im still in search of a quality, standalone hose less powered HEPA respirator.. so far everyone is out of stock

How do you know that the filter is HEPA grade. If is is not then you just breath into room air without protection

They say it is and when you look at it, it is well made. if you think it isn't enough, then put another layer over it to make it even more filtering.

Like traditional paprs, these rely on positive pressure to not allow "dirty air" to leak in. You will never have a tight or snug fit with these types of masks. Cheers

Many thanks, Will! I know! I shot this with an older Rode shotgun mic (RD-1?), only to find out in post that the LED lights created a buzz, so the audio in this segment is from one of the cameras. :/ I have a Tascam DR-05 collecting dust on my desk but I haven't used it in quite a while … I switched to using an extra iPhone with a Rode lav for in-car audio. I'll take a look at the DR-10L. Stay safe and be well!
