1974 I was 10 yrs old and doing log rolling shows at the Spokane WA world's fair when every day I had the pleasure of sitting around listening to his stories and his music it was a good time in my life and he was definitely a character to know. I even had the pleasure of trading things with him in fact I still have a couple of items that I traded for from him. I remember when Utah talk me into entering a bullshitters contest at the World's Fair in which he gladly let me borrow one of his stories like I said it was a good time in my life the last time I saw him was in the early 90s in Prescott Arizona. R.I.P. Utah Phillips you were truly bigger than life in a 10 year olds eyes .
-George, I was a volunteer in Folklife. I also had a season pass so I didn't need to volunteer to get in. I went to the fair on the 2nd day. Saw the whole thing and ended up in Folklife. Never really left. The last day a few of us hung out. It was strange knowing that after 6 months, that was it...no more. Folklife changed me in ways I am still learning. Utah and I stayed in touch. The last time I saw him was July 1998 at his house in Nevada City. I miss him.

I could listen to this over and over! What a great storyteller!
thank you Kfat,. Kpig, for all the years of excellent and memorable music... Again I say thank you, thank you, and thank you....:-)
I loved KFAT radio in the late 70's. That is where I first heard this story.
The best story teller ever. RIP my dear friend.
I remember hearing this on the radio in Detroit back in the day.
Now apply this to people who think Wikipedia is inaccurate, and they know specifically how and why. “Well… What are you waiting for?”
Was lucky enough to see him do this LIVE at Juicy John Pinks coffee house in Dekalb Illinois damn he was so funny
I have an autographed poster of his. Shook his head and spoke to him for a while.
I heard it back in the '80s on KFJC.
I heard this for the 1st time in 1974 or thereabouts. I remember cuz I was with my lesbian ex-girlfriend Sandy. Cracked me up.
It's good though!
hilarious story, i retold it
