- www.linebacker-... - Penn State was on its way to a bowl game, a rather nice bowl game. But how nice depended on what the Nittany Lions would do to finish out the 1991 regular season. West Virginia was coming to town, after beating Penn State in both 1988 and 1989.
I remember watching this game on VHS. I was living overseas and received care packages from home with Penn State and Steelers games. I would watch them multiple times to help with the homesickness which is probably why I have this one burned into my memory 30+ years later.. I vividly remember Paterno talking about the fake punt before half time. The team had enough mistakes in the first half for him to light them up in the locker room.

How did WVU go from the 88 team to whatever the hell I just saw. That WVU RB for WVU murrell started for the AZ cardinals for several seasons! You’d NEVER see such a gaping difference in talent like that in college football today. Overwhelmed and smothered at every second of play. I’m utterly embarrassed for this 💔 of a WVU football team. They couldn’t even get crap points against the back ups. And this team two years later goes 11-0 two years later,btw. Insane! 😂

Wrong. We played in 1992 at WVU. That was my first ever start as a Nittany Lion. So, I certainly remember!

I was at this game. "In the shadow of Mt. Nittany," which can no longer be seen from Beaver Stadium. That's progress.
Back when Pennsylvania State was an independent. Also, this was the inaugural year of Big East Football.

This team played a filthy schedule. They played @ Miami lost a slug fest 20-27. Lost @ USC 20-17. , Destroyed ND 38-24 And Tenn 42-17. Ended #3 in nation. A very good Penn State squad.
1991 Penn State was damn good. Their #3 final ranking was very much justified. With that said, the USC (3-8 in '91) was brutal! I'm a ND fan to this day and was at the '91 game in which PSU ran all over the Irish. The Nittany Lions '91 backfield was absolutely loaded (ND had a loaded backfield too) and their defense was stout all season.
IMO, Washington was the best in 1991. PSU vs Miami in a neutral field would have been great to see.

They played the following year in Morgantown. It was a tight game. PSU did put up another td at the end of the game to make it look deceptive.
