How does this compare to the steepest roads around you?
I live in the netherlands.... onze big flat.
I was going to measure how steep my local hills are, but you'd get a protracted reply.
I rode with Dan on Sat while he was testing out his new Supersix Evo, he's properly strong. I wonder how much quicker he would have been on his super light climbing bike rather than his aero bike?! There's another great climb in North Wales called Gwaenysgor hill (The Wall). Not quite as steep as this one in Harlech at 'only' 33%, but it's longer and rather gruelling. The view from the hillside is rather splendid too.
Went up a road last week that was over 5km long at 14% average but the road surface was nowhere near as good as that Welsh hill. The Bastille in Grenoble also looks steeper than that hill.
There are definitely steeeper streets around where I live in Switzerland: www.strava.com/segments/20373626
“What he doesn’t know is that I’ve changed his gear to a 3923!”
Me: *laughs like I have any idea what that means*
Changed his front chainrings from 50 and 34 teeth to 39 and 23 teeth to make it easier to climb
cameron robertson I still don’t know what that means but at least it was easier for him to climb
@@ahahm3 Are you ready for a big nerdy explanation you didn't ask for? Gears are all about ratios. And those ratios indicate how many turns of the rear wheel you will get for each turn of the cranks. lower ratios give more torque and climbing ability, higher ratios enable more speed to be achieved.
Let's talk about those ratios: A ratio of 1 to 1 or 1:1 is 1 turn of the cranks giving one turn of the rear wheel. This would be a pretty good gear for climbing. If you had a 23 tooth chainring up front (on the crank) and a 23 tooth sprocket at the back (on the rear) you would have this 1:1 ratio - as 23 and 23 are equal, the ratio is 1:1. Now, a high gear like 50 tooth ring up front and 10 tooth sprocket at the back, gives a ratio of 5:1. You get 5 turns of the rear wheel for each turn of the cranks, but you'd only really be able to use this on the flat and downhills. This would be top gear on a lot of bikes
So as Cameron said, swapping his front chainrings for smaller ones gave the bike lower gear ratios across all gears, making it easier to climb
hydorah Ah, I get it a bit
cameron robertson no, he’s saying he’s changed it (from a now common 50/34 chainset) to a 53/39 chainset and a 23 tooth as the lowest gear on the cassette. This used to be standard racing setup and would have made it really difficult to go up any steep hill, let alone this one...

It was called the world's steepest street for a few months. After a recheck, the record has now been given back to Baldwin Street in Dunedin New Zealand. It is the world's second steepest now, and I suspect will stay this way.
San Francisco reputedly has steeper streets than Baldwin Rd. Because Guinness says one thing does not make it absolute fact.
A road in Pittsburgh, PA also is in the running for the steepest as is an unpaved road in Hawaii.
Must be my eyes as I age but the ine in Ireland just looks….meh…whatever.
The gradient has to be taken at the centreline of the road.Baldwin St has it but there's a road in Italy which is over 40% gradient.
Great clip thanks guys. The castle in the background is amazing and would surely inspire riders. Cheers from New Zealand.
That "steepest road on the wOOOrld" Jeremy Clarkson style was on point!
My thoughts exactly.
Not really … Way too fast. You need at least a 4 second pause between …. road… and … in the world.
This was one of the better GCN episodes. Very funny. Insanely impressive.
Ollie's initial history lesson is so enthusiastic, it made my day.
When I saw this news story this morning my first thought was literally "I wonder what that's like to cycle up", lol.
BREAKING NEWS: Baldwin Street in Dunedin NZ has just regained its title.
Looks like a trip to NZ when all this isolation is over. 😁
True, Baldwin Street has got again!
@@davidgandar2021 yep, this road had the steepest corner, but Baldwin is steepest in the middle and straight, no gimmicks ...
SquishyBiker Its about the overall steepnes, I think.
Yep! Confirmed that this welsh street measured the gradient on the inside of a corner, which bumps up the steepness a lot and isn’t indicative to what you’d actually experience when using the street

Used to walk up this climb to the pub back in the 70s , brutal ! Also been up the one in Dunedin.
That black Cannondale though... Damn fine looking machine.
I appreciate Ollie’s commitment to walking up that hill in cycling shoes 🤣
Went to Harlech on holiday a few years ago and cycled up there. By chance came across this video today and found out how steep it is. It is brutal!
Superb filming. First time I've seen the Harlech street actually *looking* steep.
I used to go on my road bike a fair amount. There were some fairly steep streets to go up where I lived. I couldn't pedal straight up them even in the lowest gears, but I got really good at traversing back and forth to go higher and higher. When I made the turn I would accelerate a little to gain some speed. Doing this, I could then get to the top and go on my way.
Watching it, I reminded of an uphill that almost killed me. And it was "only" 18% steep.
I would really want a classic bike from you guys even if it is just a scrap bike, that would do. Love the content

That CannonDale Bike is so beautiful. If I win the lottery, I will buy one and hang it in my front room.
Phillip Woody Shepherd same!!
Living in Dunedin, this climb looks significantly easier than Baldwin street. Despite the gradient it is much shorter than Baldwin street which would take around 3 minutes to complete.
You guys are Awesome! Love the videos!
It's the most cinematic video I watched on this channel.
who remembers when Lasty would do these climbing videos
Bring Matt back!
This is the video that im finding in the past weeks
A road on Mt Lookout Square in Cincinnati gets my vote. I was in good biking shape then, on a Schwinn 10 speed, pedaled standing up, and barely was able to keep going.
As of 7 November 2019, the Guinness Book of records corrected their mistake. Baldwin St was always and still is the steepest street in the world.
Hasn’t this video already come out?
We had to make some changes, you might have already seen it already.
Yes, put on a few months ago. I think it's just been reloaded because the hill has officially been recognised as the steepest in the world, beating the climb in Dunedin, New Zealand
Bill of Rights and the USA had airports during the war of independence
Excited about video that just got uploaded

Checks sanity... checks out?
Goes to the comments which are all new comments and had to actually dig for a second to find out that weirdly enough, I'm not crazy, and yes I have seen this before.
Thankyou, thought I was losing my mind haha
Baldwin Street in New Zealand reinstated as the world’s steepest street
Baldwin St has reclaimed the record as the steepest street!
That's what I was thinking .....
None of the roads near me, in Alton, Illinois, USA, are that long but several of the streets here are well over 40 degrees for 2-3 blocks (some 300+ meters) making it a serious challenge as well as training ground. I'm years out from tackling them, myself, and never see anyone cycling the steeper parts but I think Dan could appreciate it. By the way, the steeper streets are mostly brick laid in the late 1800s to early 1900s so that cars and city vehicles can keep traction (even when it is dry), NO ONE attempts them when they are wet.
Ollie surely wants his job as TDF commentator with als his historical knowledge
He could give it a go! Rob Hatch would take some beating with his historical knowledge AND his fluency in 4 languages!
The new results confirmed Baldwin Street, NZ has the steeper gradient of 34.8%, compared to Ffordd Pen Llech’s gradient of 28.6%.
but they measured the gradient? how is that possible
The road to our other house is like this. I just got my bike and it's a blessing to downhill but hell for uphill, what I do is runup in fast gear then slowly changed to slow before hitting the climb so I still have the force
I really like your humour in this episode :-)
I once biked straight up a hill off-road with a gradient of 28%. It was really hard to keep my front tyre on the ground.
I live in the Fenlands. I thought hills were a myth until I saw this.
More than just bridges out there you know Colin!
Love your humor.
First thought that comes to my mind is that it must have been fun getting a set of road-surfacing equipment up that road.
My wife has an e-bike, actually exactly the one Ollie rode, she pulls and paces me on steep climbs, i find it as a great training method for climbing, got definitely faster at climbing since then 😁
Awesome! This is so cool.
Yaşıyon bu hayatı abi
3:07 I don't even know what he's on about 3923
Thats the funny part 😂
I was there not that long ago.... first time cycled up that road back in 1984 🙀
Now that is a real cycling challenge. None of this fast descent videos we keep seeing. Going uphill is a real challenge. This reminds me of Philly's infamous "Manayunk Wall" that has always been a bane to many a cyclist.
I'm a mega fan of Ollie.
And the rest of the people aswell...
And that was me also checking reality along with everyone else. Deja vu
I cycle from grindelwald to kleine scheidegg !!! That's great style😁
that was entertaining. thank you.
better to see it in real time. No perspective of difficulty slowed down
I always judged it steep when i was out of the saddle and the front wheel comes off the ground.
@Dakota Long
I did Ffordd Penn Llech in the 1980s when it 2 way and signed 1 in 2 1/2.
I had to rest my belly on the handlebars to keep the front wheel down. It's the only hill I have had to do that on.
Fun video guys, good work
Been there, done that hill in 1990, at the age of 35 - I was fit then!
I suppose the words "steepest street" are important, but Via Scanuppia in the Dolomites would seem to be more difficult @ Max 45%, Ave 18.5% and 6.9 kms long

Seriously steep hill in pendine about 2/3rds of a mile straight up like to see you cycle that, I used to live in pendine and it was tough
The sign that says unfit for motors is also in Welch. Now I got to learn my first Welch. For some reason I thought it wasn't used anymore. Imagine bicycling up a hill too steep for motors. Well someone had to pave and truck the asphalt to the paver. Brakes don't fail me now!
The Manayunk 'Wall' in Philadelphia (part of a bike race) is rather steep and only 17%.
"What he doesnt know, is that I swaped his gears out with a 29-33. LOL"
Yea I dont get it
Usually like a 50-39, made climbing easier for him, also referring to the front chainrings. Im an MTBer but that’s what it means
39x23 is the lowest gear you'd get on a setup with 53/39 chainrings and a 11-23 cassette in the back.. the kind of setup you only use for flatland riding LOL.
Usually you'd go with a compact chainset for this kind of crazy stuff, 50/34 with 11-28, 11-30 or 11-34 in the back depending on how strong you are and preferred cadence.
Essentially he swapped his gears for the worst possible (modern( combo for climbing.

thanks for the history lesson
Extremly impressive! 36 degrees is in fact 40%. I was wondering if it would be more efficient to run up the hill instead of biking it. At that incline due to traction limitations and the weight of the bike it may not help you that much to be on a bike instead of on your feet. While running you have more direct access to your glutes than while biking I assume but I am not sure. Maybe something to try. :-) :-) :-) (I am sure that if there was big water or mud puddles to cross during the climb then no contest running is the way to go. :-) :-)

There is a completely separate activity category for e-bikes now, so they even have their own segments. If you suspect an activity has been done on an e-bike and you actually care enough, just flag it and it will automatically be removed from leader boards.
