- Professional road cyclists are good, but how good? As amateurs it’s hard to tell just how we measure up to our heroes but there are certain challenges we can take on to help show us just how far away from greatness we are! Bradley Wiggins’ hour record was estimated to require an average power of 440 watts, so we set out to see how long a novice, an amateur and a current pro could maintain this for!

I can do 750 watts for half an hour. But then again, my ebike would be doing most of the work.
-_-
🤣🤣🤣
Whoa what speed would that be on the flat
😁
Can you smell that..... Its bullshit
One obvious advantage to not owning a power meter: I don’t have to hurt myself later today.
Haha, same here!
@hosatosa I increased my ftp today. Now I'm afraid of the coming workouts 😂
@hosatosa started zwifting six weeks ago. that was my 3rd test now. as there's some variance due to the dependence on daily changing fitness I want to do one every two weeks.
I've already done the hurting myself! Pushed 400W average in a hill climb for 5 minutes in November.
But I'm relatively big, so was a long way down the field. And utterly destroyed by the effort!
@hosatosa I'm using a workout plan so I'm somehow forced to do these sorkouts. currently I have to do 3 units a week with a duration of 0,83-1,5 hours. that's time you can probably cut out of your daily routine. we're wasting time way to often. like watching videos about cycling on RUclips...

Not a single mention of the current world hour record holder? Give Campenaerts some respect please.
That’s exactly what I thought! 🇧🇪🇧🇪🇧🇪
My tought also , proud to be a belgium , you get a dislike for that guys
Campenaerts did the record at 1800m (55.089 km), Wiggins at sea level, so as GCN said, based on Watts alone Wiggins is higher. Of course the REAL record is Chris Boardmans 56.375 km ;-) It would not surprise me that factoring in modern tech / aero of Campenerts bike (and gear, training, POWER METER etc...he did loads of testing in the wind tunnel) Vs the now illegal position but old technology bike of Boardman bike you could argue the "technology" contribution may be equal, so in other words, Boardman on today's bike would be still the best? Edit - Should add that Campenaerts body position / handlebars were pretty on the edge, however they got approved by the UCI but are clearly trending back to Boardmans "Superman" position!!!!!
Jason King wiggins weighed also more ...
@@jasonking9170 Boardmans man its was an other time tou knox 90's i don't think this record is legit
I think that any pro would agree pros are born *and* made. Point taken about genetics, but it's still a lot of hard work to reach and hold pro level.
It's a lot of work but the Pro before they're pro's, do the same amount of work as the amateur and have vastly superior results and because of it can can train longer and harder which amplifies the gap between the two. Then the pro becomes a pro and can dedicate even more time to training and then they get even better. The fact is that if you gave an amateur the resources to train at the pro level they couldn't physically do it. They would either give up or get injured. I just can't do multiple repetitions of Alpe d'Huez.
@@sevenrats agreed even though they achieve pro level its gonna be harder for them to be one of the best
@@sevenrats plus thats the very reason why not every pro can set an hour record even having the resources needed

I cant get enough of Ollie, he has so much enthusiasm. The aerodynamic position is more important than your workload. I don't produce 440 watts, but I can get a good workout for all of 3:50 minutes as well. Although google estimates my ride should take 14 minutes.
Fitness and training aside, 440W at 75kg is very different to 440W at 60kg or 90kg. I would have preferred to see the challenge using W/KG according to what Wiggo had during his record attempt.
It's not a climb. W/drag coefficient or frontal area is more like it ;)
@@augustgames6502 Rolling resistance also counts, and the frontal area/drag coefficient does more of the compensation for that weight difference. A friend and I have exactly the same bike, but he is quite a bit lighter. Even on the same tires we see a very noticeable difference in power output at the same speed on flat road; rolling resistance only.
440w is kids game

I freaking love your videos! All your humorous clips are great😂
Can't stop laughing with the "Stig" style of the pro rider. I recon his pretty aero looks is the secret behind this stamina... 🤔😁
great job, Conor!!!! impressive numbers!!!
Is it me or is gcn producing a lot of great content recently? 3:50 minutes at 440 watts is pretty good in my opinion. It'd be the edge of my power profile I think, and I've been riding quite a bit. That pro rider looks like perhaps it's Mr. Hematocrit (Mr. H) who smashed some impressive kom's on RUclips a few years back.
Great work George, I was cramping up, just watching..

Super interesting clip! Would definitively like to see a real world test like that. Time up a specific hill (one used in a tour maybe) or a 100m effort...
Good man Ollie. Another great video 👍
Nice work Oli ! I decided to take the challenge too. After a short warmup, I dialed up the Smart Trainer to 440 watts. I lasted a whooping 1:07 mins. (67 sec). Great video! I once did 440w for 2min up the legendary Cauberg from the Amstel Gold Race, mind you at 65kg bodyweight
This is the single most depressing segment you’ve ever produced. Cheers for that.

Haha.. that’s what I thought.. Don’t bother training or even trying, unless you are born as some freakish skinny boy with big thighs and lungs..
Right?!? And literally right after New Year, as if to quash any resolution-makers out there. Cruelty, I tell ya!
Ya and Ollie is become more of a wanker with each passing episode.
this actually makes me want to go get on my kickr and see how long i can hold 440 now, so it is a bit motivating, for me at least.
Its about training as well i started when i was 8 years when i was 15 years i was able to travel 31 km in 45 min sharp that means i traveled in avg of 41km. My lungs increased to 7.6l . Maybe it was genetic or maybe hard work i traveled every day 7 a week 365 days a year at least 70 km in total with the first half in sprint. All i am saying keep training find you boundary and climb over go more just tell yourself repeat ever day and go a little more and you will see in 2 or 3 years you can hold it for a much longer time
It's amazing and unbelievable.
I never imagined how much difference between a beginner, advanced and professional.
I think at the beginning of the clip that the professional will not exceed a quarter of an hour, but shock, he exceeded 45 minutes and I think he can provide more.
Thank you for this wonderful content.
Your follower from Iraq
Once you go over your FTP, things go south quickly in any sport. But yes, its crazy how much higher FTP pros have. But in reality this just means that the pro is "just" 2-3x faster than the beginner and not 60 times.
Very interesting. As it was 1 hour pace I guess that’s the equivalent to half-marathon pace for runners. I was trying to work out what level of runner could maintain 22kph for 3:50 to estimate your level in my ‘language’ because anyone who could run at that speed for almost 4 mins would be pretty good as that would be 1,466m i.e. almost a 4 min 1,500m.
With due respect, that sounds way too high for even a very keen, competitive amateur.
What do you think?
Great video and thanks for sharing. 👍🏃♂️
The new GCN presenter: The Stick
The Stick 'n' the Brick need to get a shared segment on the GCN show :-)
Final Edit: It's definitely Conor Dunne. He rode the Giro in 2019, is really tall, skinny, and just retired ("fresh from the pro peloton") and I remember from somewhere that he was announced as a new GCN presenter for 2020. All of the reasons that I thought it was Lloyd fit Dunne, and he doesn't have any arguments against him like dark arm hair.
Edit: Wait, could it be Tom Last? He has light hair and freckles on his arms. He never started the Giro, and isn't as tall, but maybe he's the guy on the bike and the other stuff is just misdirection. Edit #2- It's not Tom Last, looking at old videos shows that he has a birthmark or something on his left arm that the mystery rider doesn't have.
I thought the mystery rider was Dan Lloyd, but I'm not so sure. Here is evidence in favor of it being Dan:
1. The mystery rider has skinny arms, so it's probably not Hank or Opie. The GCN presenters with skinny arms are Ollie (but it's clearly not him), Si, and Dan.
2. The mystery rider says "it's easier than riding the Giro." Dan has ridden the Giro, and I think he's the only GCN presenter to have done so.
3. He's wearing white Fizik shoes with two Boa dials. This instagram picture shows that Dan has similar shoes: instagram.com/p/BrQ2oOBj-Dm/
4. The mystery rider is tall. Dan is also tall.
Here is evidence that it's not Dan:
5. The Sufferfest video from 2019 (ruclips.net/video/YvemLgLpO3c/видео.html) makes me think that Dan probably can't hold 440W for 46 minutes. But maybe that's a power number that he did as a pro, and that's why he seems to have been "faking" the ride in the videl.
6. The same video from point 5 shows that Dan's arm hair is darker than the mystery rider.
7. Ollie says that the rider is "fresh from the pro peloton" and Dan retired several years ago. But again, maybe these are old numbers from Dan's pro career, and would explain why he was "faking" in the video.
8. The mystery rider is fairly vascular. I don't think I've seen Dan looking quite like that.
Here is one thing that might solve the mystery- the rider has a few freckles on their arms. From the video in point 5 we can see that Dan has freckles on his arms, but they might not be in the same places. The mystery rider might not even be a GCN presenter, but if that's the case then we'll probably never figure it out, there are just too many possibilities. And the shoes are pretty common, I think most of the GCN presenters have those shoes.
Love your work, and I concur 🧐😄
You didn’t need to do all this research. Ollie reveals who it is at 8:44.
What do you mean with "the rider has a few freckles on their arms"? Theres just one rider with freckles, it should be "the rider has a few freckles on his arms".
@@TheSteinbitt Thanks for trying to be a grammar Nazi, but my sentence is correct. "Their" isn't always used as a plural pronoun, it is also used as a gender-neutral singular pronoun.

Ollie's definitely get the physique of a real cyclist. He's wearing lycra and the sleeves are baggy.
I'm pretty sure GCN presenter kits are custom fitted, so I think Ollie has lost some weight recently. Less weight, more skinny, more aerodynamic for the hour attempt?
I would love to see how long MvDP can hold this power...
You saw the swift comercial to?
Norman Zielke
Probably almost an hour. He held 278 watts for 6 hours...
That'll be a long video
He could do it, but he's quite a lot heavier I think. This test didn't account for that, it should have been W/kg, wiggins was a twig, and the overweight guy in the beginning would have had to push maybe 30% more power for the same work/weight ratio.
barebare
I weigh 71 kg and my FTP is 284 watts. That’s exactly 4 watts per kilo. Take Mathieu Van Der Poel for example. He weighs 73 kg and it’s estimated by a few guru’s that his FTP is about 445 watts. That’s 6.1 watts a kilo. If I were to push that power to weight ratio, I would only survive for about three or four minutes before collapsing in pain. Now that is what I call an impressive man!
Isn’t the point to try to find more of those athletes that are born and get them into the elite levels of sport so that we can enjoy their achievements. I wasn’t discouraged. Good on George for giving it a go. That’s elite sportsmanship.
When Paula Radcliffe had to stop to drop some unwelcome "Klingons" in the London Marathon I wondered how long it would take her to drop me. A few friends and I tried working it out and it was just stunning. I was a George like; 80 to 150m at her pace (there was some debate but let's say my, not too shabby, 100m sprint is her pace). Our best athlete, a 10k International and commonwealth runner would have been dropped somewhere before 14 miles. Same conclusion, pros are very, very different, Born and made. I suspect that as well as being fit, well planned, focussed and competitive that they have the constitution of a Tiger Tank and a "clyde built" immune system. At 65, I'm way over the hill now but what remains is the joy of "knocking my pan in". It really doesn't do to compare yourself to others. We all end up with a tussle aginst ourselves and Old father time. But that remains a delight.
A genetic disposition towards asthma can help power output as well :D
Everyone has asthma at 440 watts
George did a pretty impressive shoe change whilst doing 440 watts there.

Good on ya George!
I liked this video very much. Thanks.
I looked at my Strava power curve, and found my longest 440w effort was 1 minute and 41 seconds. It was on a KOM attempt last year for a relatively uncompetitive strava segment. And, btw, I did not achieve the KOM, I was 7 seconds short.
The secret pro. Some say he is Si’s Euro pro cousin, all we know is he isn’t called the Stig!
I would like a followup video to see how you setup that wahoo for that power
When I was 12, I stole a bike from one of my father's clients because he used to beat me severely, and I had had enough. I decided to run away to my grandmother's house in another city. I ran 62 kilometers in 3 hours with no training, and I was only 12 years old. I had never been in any competition, but I believe I may have good genetics for this. Even now, at 37 years old, my bike is 60 years old, covered in rust, and without clips, I can still beat many fit people.
The only way I could hold 440 watts for an hour It would have to be using lightbulbs and then I would struggle
I like how he tapped the seat, said nothing and walked out. I can only imagine what he was thinking??? Hahaha.

Emma possibly was not close to this wattage. She was very strong in Watts per kilogram, hence her being a very very strong climber.
@@harris6735 correct. I'm a 55kg woman who races at a national level (no where near Emma's level obviously) and would struggle to hold 440W for a couple of minutes. That would be 8w/kg for me and even more for Emma who I imagine weighs less than 50kg.

Pro rider is supposed to be a generalized top rider, 46m @440 has been reported from riders on race breakaways.
Interesting the cadence choices. I would probably pick around 105 rpm to attempt this. GCN guy chooses a very high cadence.
Although on one exercise bike I need 132 rpm for 440 watts which might not be very efficient.
My comfortable cadence seems to roughly obey a cube root of power function with 300 watts and 90 rpm matching up. It seemed to be about max level on the gym bike I tested.
Top athletes are born; not made. I agree with you, George! One example that comes to mind is sprinters, they are born with the speed which they can build from to be faster. But you can't work on being fast. Either you are born fast or you are not.. Solid work George!!
