My suspicion about the imperfect wake word reactions is it's due to the single microphone. Commercial solutions (Amazon, Google) use microphone arrays so the processor can focus in on your voice. Also I noted that the microphone that this unit uses has a frequency response all the way up to 15kHz. That's unnecessarily wide for a device designed to only focus on human speech.
@@mich49080 thanks for your explanation regarding mics! Yes let's hope we see some multi mic devices coming into the market soon! There is one maker that I am following closely with interest
@simonsayshomeassistant right now there's no decent satellites on the market. I built my own on Respeaker Lite, Nabu and FutureProofHomes are working on their own XMOS-based solutions (both scheduled by the end of year I guess). That's the best can be right now.
Mini USB - WTF?
Yeh, USB C would have been better!
Great to see these local voice tests. Looking forward to these devices improving.
Thanks Michael, yes I think we are all holding out for the Home Assistant Voice hardware!
I have the same problem of the voice commands not working all the time. For example If I say Hey
@@ubeaut hehe yeh
good info. Im looking forward to see what the HA guys come up with for sale
@@rrrrrrrr290 oh yeh me too !

very little i expect... I've been waiting for some NSpanel Pro type screens, but nothing
Great video
@@Ausmerican Thank you :)
Thanks for reviewing this. Same results from a custom esp32 build so there still is a way to go as you pointed out.
Thanks Drumslapper, yes it shows you just how challenging this project is!

Hi there, what brand of digital clock you have there in the background?
Hi there, this is my clock s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_Dk5MPhr
It's weird they're using a usb mini connector in 2024. Are those cables even made any more?
Not sure, at least they do supply a cable in the box!
Sold out :(
But this is intriguing!
Yes it is, I didn't realise it was sold out :(
The supplier said that they should be available in a week or so!
is it 17 years old? why does it have usb Mini ??
Good question, not sure why they chose this option
I was building exactly same builds (inmp+max) for months. They're not viable.
What do you think the answer is for these devices?

Until these things reliably respond to wake words, they’re absolutely useless.
Yes, I must agree ! I can't blame the hardware as the s3 box has the same issues
