What i love about this comic universe is that it can be dark and deconstructy but the superheroes are still relatively good people. In a way despite Watchmen existing,i feel it fits more with Alan Moore's style of deconstructing superheroes than people like Mark Millar.
@@ComicTropes Ahh. I was wondering why you were farming in New England. It kind of sounded like someone from Massachusetts trying to sound like they're from Maine.
If you'd like another take on this concept that lacks these things, I recommend the original Squadron Supreme series by Mark Gruenwald and various artists. The characters are direct analogues for the classic Justice League of America lineup (with the exceptions of Nuke [Firestorm] and Magica [Zatanna]). And the consequences for every mistake this crew make just keeps stacking up in a very human way.
@@theomegajuice8660 I haven't watched the show, but I really enjoyed the comic. It goes well beyond "what if superheroes were total c*nts", and into some nice conspiracy theories, and I think it also deconstructs deconstruction, by having Hughie represent the reader to some extent. The comic's pacing is a little shit, tho. 20 issues can feel like 40.
Deconstruction doesn't necessarily mean making it darker and more cynical: It literally just means taking a genre apart and examining how it would work from a realistic perspective. It's just that the sort of stuff that often gets deconstructed, like old-school superhero comics or fantasy, tends to be inherently idealistic and ignores much of the harshness of the real world. Many deconstructions have... well, perhaps gone a bit overboard in their attempts to put a realistic spin on that. Me, I'm much more interested in reconstructions. That's when you put it back together again, but try to make it better and more nuanced than the original.
Jeff Lemire is honestly becoming one of my favorite comic writers. Black Hammer is the comic that really introduced me to him. His short Hawkeye series, while not better than Matt Fraction’s run, was pretty fun, Moon Knight is just very thought-provoking and his Old Man Logan run was pretty underrated. Plus, Sweet Tooth is just a masterpiece. But Black Hammer is just his magnum opus. The first Dark Horse comic I read outside of the Hellboy universe. While I’ve only read the first three trades and Doctor Star, I’m just engaged in the story and the characters living in this universe. Can’t wait to read the rest!
Just gotta say, I look forward to the new episodes hardcore. I've really grown quite fond of this channel. Great info and just all around great subjects. Thanks for the awesome content.
Hey, Thanks for a the video on Jeff Lemire. I've heard a lot about him, but never checked him out because I don't read as much as I use to. But you've finally pushed me over the edge into reading him, and he's officially on my to read list.
Big fan of the show, since you do go over indie comics, will you ever go over God Hates Astronauts? It's one of my favorites, and I'd love to see your take on it.
thanks for the suggestion. I saw this book on the racks and I couldn't quite think of what the book is suppose to be. but will definitely read the trades. I enjoy Planetary a lot which has a lot of analogues for the superhero comics and I dig that this book has similar qualities.
jeff lemire is my favorite writer currently. he is incredibly smart and I find little issues with most of his stories. he will definitely be remembered long past his stories. edit: forgot to say, great episode chris! Been watching for a weeks and binging the channel.
That was a fantastic episode. Once again, you've articulated -- quite well -- thoughts and questions I've had that I couldn't put into words. I'd strongly recommend Lemire's Plutona as well (assuming that because of this vid we shouldn't expect one on Plutona, at least for a minute yet? Still, well worth the read.) So, thanks again. Well done, Maestro.
I was happy to discover this video (and subsequently channel) after a work colleague shared (some of) the Black Hammer comics with me. I had been a big Asterix&Obelix and Cubitus fan as a child, with an interlude of Disney „Lustige Taschenbücher“ during my preadolescent days. Then Cartoon Network followed and I forgot about comics. As an adult I never really picked up the topic again, though some friends did give me some more recent Batman comics as birthday gifts. I do watch action hero movies, but I just happened to miss out on the whole comics dimension/medium of this phenomenon. A few years ago I went through an accidental discovery of the Sunstone BDSM comics and devoured them with great pleasure but that’s about it. And then, out of the blue, without warning or preparation, Black Hammer struck and I loved it completely. Now - arriving to what I wanted to say in the first place - would you consider having a podcast with Jeff Lemire, to discuss more on his life, his past, his influences? Would be cool.
This series looks so neat! I'm usually not one for comic books much but just from you explaining the story a bit, I can see myself definitely reading this if I ever get the chance.
I loooooove Jeff Lemire’s work! I haven’t read all his stuff yet, but... his writing tropes based on family, and his Indy artwork style, is soooo great! He’s literally my favorite-est writer right now😊👍
Mr tropes thanks for releasing such quality content, and for not realising based on what's popular at the moment (the boys or watchmen when the TV series comes out.) 👍
william Gazca I said what I wanted to say about The Boys in my review of Brat Pack. But I thought the show was a big improvement so I may discuss that some time.
ComicTropes that's fair...I just really appreciate the fact that I can learn about some (what I would call) "deep dives" through your channel, whereas other channels would never touch upon anything thats not on the public's lips and minds at the moment. In my opinion that's what makes this channel special. Either way I wish you and your channel nothing but success 👍
Molson Canadian is pisswater. If you're going to drink mainstream Canadian beer, at least drink something like Moosehead or Rickard's Red. Could be worse; you could be drinking 50, I guess.
11:38 - Manga easily fixes that by generally adopting the norm of less space between panels horizontally, then using a wider space vertically. Not that everyone can get it right though, but it does help a lot for the most part.
Animal Man's new 52 was fantastic, it balanced dark, humorous and action packed family superheroism, phenomenal art and writing, got my wife to start reading comics based solely on that series and now she's hooked!!!! :) Great video man!!!
Sounds like a unique story, I kinda recall hearing about it before but didn't know much about it as I kept forgetting to check up on it. I like the super being stories that show their "normal" lives as themselves and what they think on and deal with day to day , but in a more realistic way I guess. Gail's reverse of Captain Marvel's situation is really funny, she becomes the kid when turning into her hero alter and her regular self keeps aging like normal. That is always something I wondered about Billy Batson, he always was a kid when in normal mode, and that always seemed strange that his regular self didn't age, but I guess that was the characters schtick, he started out a kid who was given amazing powers. But wasn't the original movie Captain Marvel back in the 1940s or whenever was an adult when he got his abilities?
Stumbled onto Black Hammer by accident and then couldn't wait for each issue to come out! (OT: the one spinoff I quit reading after issue one was Black Hammer '45 ... I'm an art oriented comic fan and even though it might be a well written story line the throw away, sketchy scrawly art is so distracting I'm not bothering with this title) ...
Lemire's artwork reminds me of Bob Burden's in Mystery Men and Flaming Carrot. There a sort of rustic earthy naturalism like a Jarmusch movie in comic form. Do fans today know the Mystery Men movie was based on an actual comic which was the less bizarre sibling of a better known but unfilmably bizarre title? Flaming Carrot was in some ways Deadpool before Deadpool.
Well, that looks really fine! Thanks for the revealing, just checked after and loved the few covers i saw. A lot of nods and references here and there. There's one by Jeff Lemire that's ugely "Kirbyesque"!! The Bad Bad Villain (...er..Thactus? Darnos? Galakseid? 🤔) is also Brilliant!! Thanks!👍
Black Hammer is great. I'm glad I started reading it after first running into Jeff Lemire on Old Man Logan which I would also recommend as one of the best X-Men titles in recent years.
It's refreshing to see a story that comments on superheroes without being condescending and "superheroes are like, super BAD you guys. Try reading something else, maybe?"
Fairly new to your channel, but have you ever considered taking a look at Moon Knight? Lemire actually did a run on him not too long ago. The character is fantastic, and everybody should give him a look.
Thanks Chris I always enjoy your videos. I like every Lemire comic I read. He also has one called DESCENDER which is his attempt to make a SAGA style SciFi epic. With beautiful watercolors by Dustin Nguyen!

The piecemeal way the story is served out keeps the reader guessing and on top of that there are large questions as to why the superheroes cannot leave the little town and what the bleep is going on. I enjoy it a lot :-)
Great video! But I'd argue that Black Hammer IS a deconstruction of the superhero genre, it just does it in a manner different than Watchemen or Brat Pack. It's very much an analysis of classic superhero archetypes and much of the enjoyment of the story comes from watching the characters play against the norm. They are superheroes but they can't act out superhero plots. I think what if Leatherface was left in a room and there were no teenagers to kill and he was forced to think about his life decisions.
Hey, wayyyyy off topic I know. But was thinking. I know you do manga at times. You also like to do odd and unusual stories. You should really look into to a segment about Ranma 1/2 by Rumiko Tekashi. It’s such a great series and truly unique and bizarre. It’s been ongoing for I think 15 years now. Any way. That or maybe “Maus”. I’m sure you hate the random video ideas thrown at you but I couldn’t help it. Huge fan. Stuck in bed after shoulder replacement surgery binge watching your channel. Loving ever vid. Thanks.
Hey dude. There is like, basically no one on RUclips talking about Shaolin Cowboy. I just discovered it a couple days ago. I'm very intrigued and would love to see someone of your caliber discuss it in a video.
I've accidentaly got sent two complete volumes of Black Hammer, with 6 issues each, as a shipping error last year. Never read them. Should I finally do it?
I'd call it an exploration of archetypes and characters in one go. All of the characters fit nicely into well worn superhero grooves in pop culture, but at the same time they're obviously fully formed people with the same sorts of issues that everyday people have while also being those extra ordinary archetypes. So it ends up touching on deconstructionist ideas, but not out of a sense of deconstructing but rather just in the way that said character's life is going. If that makes any sense at all.
Oh hi! You caught me watching my favorite Comic book RUclipsr and both liking and commenting to help him fight the Almighty algorithm. Keep up the great work Chris!
Oh Hi There, The Boys were wondering if you wanted to hang out? I will have to try Blackhammer out, I've looked at the comic a few times but never bought it after reading Essex County and got super sad afterward and was like ''Dayumm Jeff you write sad stories'' ;(
Loved this episode. How is the series different from Royal City? It's not the powers, it's the death of a kid. Something to think about. Can you do a whole episode on Lemire? He has this, one of the best takes on wolverine, royal city, graphic novels on the Indian school system, hockey players and more.
