  • Kalani Plays two types of Shruti boxes in this tutorial: a lower-rage "male" and a higher-range "female" type. He also compares the sound of the Shruti boxes with a similar sounding instrument, the Melodion.
The shruti Boxes in this video are made by Monoj Kumar Sardar & Bros.

The best drone sound is both male and female shruti boxes together. The drones combined somehow sounded 'complete' or fuller. If I were to select one, I'd probably go for a female shruti box. You're right that your vocal range suits the male shruti box but when you sang I still preferred the sound of the female box. I listen to a lot of classical Indian music and am accustomed to hearing female tanpura accompaniment, which seems to be more prevalent. If you want to play shruti boxes hands-free, a UK manufacturer makes pedals that can be attached to a shruti box whereby musicians may use their feet to operate the bellows. Such an arrangement will permit you to operate both boxes while you play another instrument with your hands. Where there's a will there's a way.

    Hello,
    Thank you for your video!
    I loved it!
On the MONOJ KUMAR SARDAR & BROS website I didn’t find the male/female option.
    Is there a different nomenclature?
I want to purchase the male option.
    Thank you 🙏🏼

They may be identified as “low” and “high” or “upper/lower” ranges.

Lovely drones. I'm seriously thinking about getting a shruti box. Is it better with the pedal,or without? L9ved the video

My guess is that the sound is the same with or without the pedal. It’s basically a different way to play the instrument, but shouldn’t change the sound.

I don’t have a special source. Maybe try reaching out to the manufacturer. They might have a recommendation.

They should be able to tell you, or the note range will be listed with reference Letters and Numbers, such as C3 to C4.

That is more appropriately named a melodica. A melodeon is usually a much larger instrument, often similar to a full sized reed organ or a large accordion size. Also as a point of fact: a melodicas and harmonicas are not double reeded. One of the major differences between the woodwinds you mentioned(oboe, bassoon and English horn which are double reeded) is that the harmonica almost always uses metal reeds, as does a melodica. The winds typically use wooden reeds. I do not have enough experience with the construction of shruti boxes and harmoniums to know if they normally use wooden, metal, or plastic reeds.
If you are going to attempt to educate, please be more accurate. People are going to take what you say as fact, whether it is true or not.

Sorry, but you’re information and comments are inaccurate. The instrument I play in the video is a Melodian, which is printed on its case. Several sources claim that melodicas and melodians are the same type of instrument (They are basically different brand names.)
You are correct about reed vs. metal, but that was not in dispute. I appreciate your intention to help, but I recommend doing more research before making claims that could be misleading.

@@KalaniMusicI understand your enthusiasm. But you are still incorrect. Melodica is the correct term for the instrument. Melodica is the name not just the brand name. A melodion is as I described before. The one you have and the units manufactured by Suzuki(which I’m pretty sure yours is, just resold) was called a melodion(bastardized spelling of melodeon) to skirt around the original inventor of the melodica and not use the name. The standard name for that instrument is a melodica, in construction if not branding.
I understand you want to be right. I also understand that this has become pedantic. But I am factually correct, no matter how much you believe in yourself. Your packaging is simply a business tactic to get around paying royalties. Similarly how people often say Kleenex when they mean facial tissue. Melodica has become the de facto name for a specific instrument.
It’s okay to be wrong, Mr. Bruno.
