You can experiment with what you have; we just chose white in case you don't want to dye the liquid and want a clear crystal. Also, depending on the dye color of choice, the chenille color still may show through.

However, when using a base form, you will need to add a layer of white glue and alum before submerging the item into the solution to make sure the crystals start growing there before growing on the outside of the jar.
