Giving credit where credit is due here. I cannot actually describe how incredibly helpful this video was. After spending an hour of getting frustrated and going no where trying to figure out why I couldn’t get the clutch cover back on, this video helped me troubleshoot the issue within 5 minutes. Now my 440 rancher is back up and running thanks to this professional and very helpful video. Please make more sir!
Same. I actually ordered a generic replacement cover and brake band which arrived uncocked also. Suggested maybe I was doing something wrong and maybe I should seek advice. Now I have two covers that work perfectly. Thank you
Probably the best 'How To' video I've ever seen. I was going nuts trying to figure out how to reset it. Gave up and tried You Tube and, there was your video. Finished in less that 5 minutes. Thank you so much. for sharing your expertise !!!
The video on resetting the chainsaw brake was awesome. It was simple, to the point, and explained well. The gentleman that spoke is a great communicator.
Perfect- so clear. Up until now I have always taken the saw to a pro and paid to have it unlocked. I especially appreciate that it was not full of wasted chat or branding or let's-be-friends content. Smart, clear, straight to the point and completely businesslike. I really appreciated this.
Yeah. I bet this one guys poulan pro one is broken from him giving me the saw in pieces I've already put it all back together an cut with it It does need a new seal and either clean the carburetor parts or get a new carburetor for it so i traded him my stihl for the poulan
Wow! Wow! Wow! Thank you Thank You THANK YOU! I was in the middle of a very serious flooding situation in a large RV park. Trees down blocking service and emergency vehicles. My Husky Rancher was the only saw big enough to get the job done. Tried to put on a new sharp chain. Did NOT know I had to have the saw break OFF first. What a total pain in the butt! Lots depending on me to get it working. Finally gave up and turned to You tube for help. A LOT of Wanna Be Experts who THINK they did a good job. But compared to you they ALL totally SUCK! NONE of them explain the chain break issue, let alone how to solve it. But you did. I had several RV units floating away in the raging torrent flood. And I had several sunken boats - all due to downed trees. Thanks to YOU and your GREAT contend I was able to once again get my Husky Rancher usable again. All other wanna be Husky how to change a chain SO SUCK compared to you. All the sexy tricks they show PALE in comparison to you. Thanks again! Your video saved many tens of thousands in damage. I cannot rate you high enough!
Sir, I should be thanking you for taking the lead in caring for yourself and your neighbors during this flood. I salute you. Thank you for all you did to help alleviate the damage. And it meant so much to me to post your story here. I am humbled at whatever small part my video played in your story and I'm glad you found me. Dean
You just saved two neighbors from probable disaster. That load spring is so stiff, and attempting to turn the three armed spiny thing with needle nose pliers was taking us over the edge. We used your expertise and had it done in 3 seconds. Thanks.
After an hour of fighting with my Husq 455, I decided to see if anyone else had the same issue. Wish I had checked earlier. So glad you uploaded this! Thank you!
Just 3o minutes? I spent an hour trying to get my new chain back on, not realizing that this very thing is what happened to me when I tried to remove the cover! Thank you for the clear explanation and closeups. It took me 15 seconds to fix the brake system and now I'm heading back outside to replace the chain!
I couldn't understand why the cover was so hard to take off, then I couldn't put it back on - the break was engaged when I removed it. Now I will give this a shot. Thank you
Thank you, Sir!!!! I loaned both my 455 chains saws to my cousin, and he messed them both up as you described. I spent hours trying to fix this and then I searched and found your video. Thank you!!!!!!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I was losing my mind trying to figure out the problem and decided to look on RUclips. I like the fact that you submitted two different ways of fixing it. Needless to say my chainsaw is back together and running great again. I am forever grateful.
You saved my clutch cover. The manual only contains a minor note that release chain brake, and not a single warning about what will happen once you miss it. I did. I then spent half a day with all the professionals presenting how easy it is to remove the clutch cover - which was apparently impossible after this point. Luckily I did not force the lid, but I got stuck. I only found a voice synthesizer backed up video that slightly mentioned, only a dealer can reset the brake. Your video is probably the most important Husqvarna howto. Thank you.
I’m sorry it took you awhile to find me but I’m glad you did. Thanks for watching and for the kind comments. Got lots of other Husky videos if you’d consider subscribing I’d be honored. Dean
This is a chain for homeowner saws, and as a homeowner in the Southeast who doesn't really count wood by the cord ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbs4FIpzuLyOJe2SesfbtvXi1CTnUXroD I have this (or 20BPX) on several saws at different levels of smallness. I've never felt that the safety chain is holding me back. I buy multiple chains, and when the installed one doesn't feel grabby enough, I file it, then throw it in a cup of gasoline while I rotate to the next one. I have yet to file one down to the wear lines, so I feel like I'm getting my money's worth, and I'm happy about this new 3-pack - although, at this rate, it's going to be awhile before I buy another. I don't know why I would try anything else.
I cannot thank you enough. I am a wood turner and chainsaws have been the Bain of my shop. I just bought a reconditioned husqvarna 450 Rancher and it did not come with instructions. I had a hard time getting the clutch cover off and spent over an hour trying to figure out how to get it back on. You really helped me tonight with you easy to follow video.
Same problem on my (smaller) Jonsered Saw. Wrench and screw driver didn't work... but having watched your explanation of how the brake works... I just pressed the cover in place... extended the brake lever until I felt a "snip", then holding the cover securely, leveraged the brake handle back to the open position. "Clunk!" The cover slipped down into the open band... and it was done! Thank you SO VERY MUCH!!!
October, 2024. Got a refurbished Husqvarna 450 Rancher. Saved like $180 over a new one. Looks like new, but you can tell it's been used slightly. Had to install the bar and new blade. Bar cover wouldn't come off, stuck around the clutch even though I pull the bar brake back. Had to force it off. Was thinking about sending it back until I saw this video. Fixed it in just a few minutes. Thanks!
Thank you! You're videos are fantastic! They are very clear and concise. I ran into this problem a few months ago, and if I would have watched this first, I woulda, shoulda, coulda saved a lot of time!
Thanks for saving me the cost of an overhaul. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get the chainsaw to start, or the chain to move, and was ready to send it out for an expensive overhaul, or replace the chainsaw. I decided to overhaul it myself, and got to the point of putting the cover back on and realized the chain brake was locked, and that was my problem all along. Your video is perfect.
Thanks for the video! Now, I can get back to work. Husqvarna owes you big time for me coming this close to going out to buy 2 more chainsaws to replace the 455's.
I want to thank you. Late at night tree hit by lightning crushing a gate. Green limb jammed in chain took apart and lock hung up. Could not figure out because never did that. After 40 minutes found you in line like an Angel in the night. I thank you and my family thanks you.
I was outside for almost an hour trying to get the stupid cover on today. I didn’t even get to cut trees because of it. This is the dumbest design they could have came up with. My smaller Stihl has the clutch assembly inside so it isn’t like this one. The cover comes right off regardless of the break being on or not. Other than that it’s a great chainsaw. I am so thankful for your video. It’s very well presented and easily shows how to fix this issue. Last time it happened I had to take it in to be fixed as this video wasn’t on here. So I very much appreciate your help!
Sorry it happened but glad you found me. I like the saw too and I have a few more videos on issues with that saw like the pesky oil leak. Check that one out if you have time. Dean
This just showed up as a recommended video. I have been struggling with this issue for days. Other videos didn't show me how to properly reset the brake in the clutch cover. This just saved me time and money. Thank you for posting this video!
Thank you for a great, professional video! This issue was giving me a lot of problems and this video was a simple fix! Also, love Pilot Mountain! Thanks again!
Thanks to people lie you it's possible to learn how to save a lot of time and expense is simple repairs. Perhaps that's why many many manufacturers don't provide such education with their products. You made my day.
Glad you found me Tim and glad it worked for you. Please check out my other Husky videos or better yet, please think about subscribing. Could always use viewers like you. Dean
Just so happens that I have the same chainsaw (Rancher 455) and experienced the same problem. The brake engaged after the blade and chain got pinched while cutting up a tree. Couldn't get the brake to release, so I removed the brake/clutch cover and started troubleshooting -- then, couldn't get the cover back on because, unbeknownst to me, the brake was engaged. This video helped A LOT. Got my wrench, screwdriver, and went to work. You're correct that it takes a lot of leverage, but I got it done and reinstalled the cover. Thank you!!!!
I feel like I owe you money, I was giving up and about to just buy a whole new cover and WOW! Did exactly what you instructed in the video and viola, it went right back on.
This video was exactly what the doctor recommended. Solved my problem resetting the brake in just a couple minutes. Using a vice grip helped acted as a second pair of hands. Thanks!
The video was great! Direct and to the point ! Saved me a second trip to the equipment shop after the clutch ring broke, I replaced it but couldn't reset it. Thank you
This was one of the best produced videos to trouble-shoot a problem that left me so frustrated mid-stream cleaning up property. I've had the clutch cover off numerous times, never before experienced this issue with the brake needing to be reset. Problem solved in less than 5 minutes! Thank you so much!
Man, I'm glad it helped Mr. Schiff. Nothing more frustrating that needing to get the job done, but you're stuck because of something like this. Glad it helped and thanks for commenting.
Hey, I'm glad you found me and that this video could help. Yeah, the car show is neat. Are you local? Please consider subscribing for lots more chainsaw/weedeater videos. Nice to meet you. Dean
Thanks so much for you video.. I bought a reconditioned Husqvarna 440 and I did not realize that the chain brake got activated during shipment. I removed the chain brake to attach the bar and then could not reassemble. Your video saved the day.
Thanks for this video. Saved me trip to shop. I knew brake was engaged but didn’t know how to fix. Shows how stupid I was when I threw the chain and hurriedly tried to put back on. Should always take my time.
Top notch video. Excellent instructions and you didn't make us listen to or watch a bunch of nonsense. I got my saw back together and finished working before it rained. Thanks so much.
I just about threw a big boy fit trying to understand why I’m not mechanically inclined enough to figure out what looks to be a simple fix. Thank you for this video!!! I’ll never get the hour I wasted before finding the video. GIYF.
For those who might not have noticed, if you still have the Husqvarna screwdriver/wrench tool for taking off the nut and tensioning the chain, the back side of the socket is crowned specifically to fit the clutch brake sprocket.
Thanks so much! We also had spent a crazy amount of time trying to figure out first why we couldn't get clutch cover back on. Then how to get steel band to be open enough to accommodate clutch cover. Your video was just what we needed! EZ fix. Saved us going to repair man. Then showing us the trick and screw driver with wrench! Again, great video!!!

Thank you so much for this video. The new clutch cover I installed came with the brake engaged and I had a devil of a time until I watched your video and learned how to unlock it. I used the wrench/screwdriver trick and it popped open in a second and the rest of the install was a piece of cake. Brilliant video!!
Thank you so much for this video. I borrowed a neighbors chainsaw today and it locked up. Among other things we couldn’t figure out why we couldn’t get the cover back on, and your video not only solved the mystery but provided the fix. Much appreciated!
I just subscribed it thank you I was frustrated I knew that the break was on but I had no clue how to unlock it. It's late in the evening now I will do it tomorrow thank you so much again and God-bless you in Jesus name
Couldn't agree more with the positive comments below. I too ended up taking the housing off with the brake on. Oh my gosh! You saved me a TON of effort figuring out what to do next. THANK YOU!!👍
Thanks so much. Bolt came undone on the cover and chain slipped off...tried to open it with the brake engaged 🤦 I really appreciate this. I tried your 2nd method (from another video and it started to strip the plastic on the hand break. I found that a 1/2" stubby worked for me.
Thank you for this video. I could not get the cover back on and could not figure out what was wrong. I stumbled upon this video and had it fixed the 3 minutes...Who knew. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for your video. I bought used 455 rancher saw and it arrived with the brake locked. I was getting frustrated and thinking about sending the saw back until I found your video. Thank you.
Ok then. So I bought a 24 inch 460 Rancher and made the mistake of prying the cover off 🙃 without letting off the brake. I put the chainsaw in my garage since it was getting dark. Next morning after watching the video in 10 minutes had the brake reset assembled and chainsaw started. Awesome 👌and cool 😎. Very thankful for the video.
This video saved my marriage! Ok, maybe an exaggeration but my husband and I struggled for an hour trying to get our cover on because a Husqvarna tech told us to engage the chain break before changing the chain 🥴 anyway, thank you good sir ❤ you are invited to every holiday gathering at our house 🏡 😂
This video was very helpful. I ran into a problem where the brake was sticking on when I was trying to cut wood. Thank you so much for posting this useful information.

You tube...the source of how to fix almost everything! Thanks for the video! (I used to use Husky professional saws and these Ranchers used to be near professional quality. Now days they are more like a "toy".)
You're correct about RUclips. Was talking to a family member just yesterday about the days before the internet. "It's broken? Take it to the dealer". Glad you found me. Dean
So glad I found this video. I was on the right track to reset the brake but I can see using the combination wrench and a screwdriver will make the job much easier. Thank you.
Thank you so much !! I’m new to the chainsaw world and this video saved the day and I was able to accomplish my task helping out an elderly neighbor!!!! You guys are the best ! Oh, I LOVE MY SAW !
Brilliant. Working in the woods this morning. It was raining. Saw quits. Many expletives. Well, let’s try RUclips. Back to work after this well done explanation and fix. And the sun came out. You are one powerful wizard. Thanks.
Lol. Can’t take credit for the sunshine Steve, but I’m glad you found me. I’ve been known to cut loose a few expletives myself when dealing with chainsaws. Dean
Outstanding video. Please note - be careful when twisting with the wrench, the thin metal housing can break easily if the wrench slips. Fixed mine with epoxy, so all good.
I love this video .i spent over Hey I was trying to figure out what was wrong with my chainsaw. I was going to bring it to a chainsaw repair shop till I watch the video I greatly appreciate it . You saved me so much aggravation. Your video was A1
Had this problem in the past. Jimmied up a "tool" to correct it. Took a lot of time to fix. After watching this video, clamped it in the vise and 10 seconds later the brake was released and I could get the cover back on.
You are my F234ing HERO!!!!!! I went to change the chain, thought it said do it with brake on......You know the rest ....I was dead in the water, it was getting dark and I was tires and angry.....packed in in for the day said take it home ......someone must know how to do this......I am going to go out and try it right now.....Thank you kind sure!!!!!!
@@PilotViewProductions It worked like a charm! lots of tension on that spring, I had to clamp it down to do it. You Are my F@#$ Hero!!!!!!! Note: to others before you remover the chain cover MAKE SURE BRAKE IS OFF!!!!! If you have brake on it will be hard to remove and imposable to get in back on until you watch this Vajio!
Thanks! I’ve been wrestling with my saw for three evenings and feel a bit dumb after watching your video and resetting the brake in less than 3 minutes! 🤔😆

Thanks Axel. I’m glad it helped.
Thanks to people lie you it's possible to learn how to save a lot of time and expense is simple repairs. Perhaps that's why many many manufacturers don't provide such education with their products. You made my day.
@@brian497 Thank you
Just saved me with this one i was getting seriously pissed off trying to put that cover back on
Glad it helped. Thanks for commenting.
This is the only video I could find of how the chain break works and how to reset in detail. Many thanks!
Thank you Fenrir133 for watching, and for the kind comments. Got lots of other Husqvarna videos. Please consider subscribing. Dean
Thank you for this video! I really appreciate the simple instructions and my saw is working again. Who knew!!!?
Glad it worked and that you found me Craig. Dean
I feel like I owe you money, I was giving up and about to just buy a whole new cover and WOW! Did exactly what you instructed in the video and viola, it went right back on.
Glad it worked for you Joey. Hope you watch some of my other videos. Dean
I took mine off years ago without any problem, but forgot. Been thinking about it for 3 days lol. This video saved my sanity. Thank you
Had this problem before. Took it to my local shop and charged $60 for a 5 minute fix. Thanks for the assist!
Thanks for viewing and for the comment Tim.
Thank you
Thanks for watching. Consider subscribing for more Husky videos. Dean
Four of us have been struggling with this chainsaw for so long…until now. Thank you 1,000,000x!
Glad you found me. Dean
Thank you...you just saved me a trip to the hardware store..lol. Was down in your area couple weeks ago at the car show.

@@PilotViewProductions I just moved to Germanton about a month ago. Love this place!
Thanks so much for you video.. I bought a reconditioned Husqvarna 440 and I did not realize that the chain brake got activated during shipment. I removed the chain brake to attach the bar and then could not reassemble. Your video saved the day.
Thanks for watching and for the kind words. Glad it helped. Dean
I took off the cover with the brake on, I don't know how I got it back together , but it took me all day !

@@Nolimit2far Glad you found me. Glad it helped.
Thanks for this video. Saved me trip to shop. I knew brake was engaged but didn’t know how to fix. Shows how stupid I was when I threw the chain and hurriedly tried to put back on. Should always take my time.
Thanks for viewing and I'm glad it helped.
Top notch video. Excellent instructions and you didn't make us listen to or watch a bunch of nonsense. I got my saw back together and finished working before it rained. Thanks so much.
Appreciate the comments and thanks for watching
I just about threw a big boy fit trying to understand why I’m not mechanically inclined enough to figure out what looks to be a simple fix. Thank you for this video!!! I’ll never get the hour I wasted before finding the video. GIYF.
Glad you found me too Rich. Hope my other videos can help you avoid other fits as well. Dean
Spent an hour trying to solve this issue on my 450. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching Syed. Glad you found me. Dean
For those who might not have noticed, if you still have the Husqvarna screwdriver/wrench tool for taking off the nut and tensioning the chain, the back side of the socket is crowned specifically to fit the clutch brake sprocket.
That is a really good point! Thanks for sharing this. But 'if' you don't, you can use this technique or that of others suggested here. Dean
Thanks for viewing Elisa and for the kind comments. I’ve got several other chainsaw videos that I hope will help you just as much. Please consider subscribing. Thanks again. Dean

Absolutely the most helpful video I’ve seen on RUclips. Probably saved us from buying all new parts. Thank you!
Thanks for viewing Scott and for the kind words. Dean
Thank you so much for this video. The new clutch cover I installed came with the brake engaged and I had a devil of a time until I watched your video and learned how to unlock it. I used the wrench/screwdriver trick and it popped open in a second and the rest of the install was a piece of cake. Brilliant video!!
Thanks John
Thank you so much for this video. I borrowed a neighbors chainsaw today and it locked up. Among other things we couldn’t figure out why we couldn’t get the cover back on, and your video not only solved the mystery but provided the fix. Much appreciated!
Hey thanks for checking in Jonathan. Glad it helped and much success. Dean
I just subscribed it thank you I was frustrated I knew that the break was on but I had no clue how to unlock it. It's late in the evening now I will do it tomorrow thank you so much again and God-bless you in Jesus name

Thanks for viewing.
Thanks so much. Bolt came undone on the cover and chain slipped off...tried to open it with the brake engaged 🤦 I really appreciate this. I tried your 2nd method (from another video and it started to strip the plastic on the hand break. I found that a 1/2" stubby worked for me.
Excellent. So glad it worked and you are back in business!!!! Got some more chainsaw and other new videos coming soon if you care to subscribe. Dean

Thank you so much for your video. I bought used 455 rancher saw and it arrived with the brake locked. I was getting frustrated and thinking about sending the saw back until I found your video. Thank you.
Glad it helped, thanks for commenting
Thanks for viewing Austin. Glad to hear it helped. If you get time, check out some of my other Husky videos. Much success. Dean

This was spot on. He’s correct, use a soft handled screwdriver. 1/2” wrench worked great. Great job showing a fix for a potential head banger.
