- Though insulin injections are widely taken by diabetes patients, many a time the errors in storage, technique and steps results in failure in normalising blood sugars despite the shots. Doubts:
1. What if I take insulin in a blood vessel?
2. I have read that when we take insulin at belly, it will be absorbed faster than any other spot on the body. So it may be advantageous to take fast acting insulin on abdomen .
3. In summer, when it is very hot, how can we carry insulin?
4. If the insulin cartridge/ pen is carried on a two wheeler, will the vibration/ jerking make the insulin weak?

Recently I am taking 5units of Lantus insulin using solo star pen which contains 300 units
ie it will last for about 58 doses.
Net information is that lantus insulin can't be used beyond 28 days even if it is refrigerated.
Please clarify.

Will it be possible to increase insulin sensitivity by modifying diet and exercise.?if so can we delay the use of insulin?
Dear Sir, doing daily exercise definitely improves insulin sensitivity helping to achieve better blood sugar control. Decision to initiate insulin is based on the current glycemic status; definitely the dose of insulin will be continually titrated based on the reported blood sugars.

Sir...how to change lantus solostar catridge?
Dear madam
Push the dosage knob in completely.
Remove the old Lantus cartridge by pressing the "Cartridge Release" button. The used cartridge can be thrown away.
Push the dosage button all the way in, and hold the pen so that the "Cartridge Release" button is at the top.
Slide the new cartridge straight into the pen.
The cartridge will lock in and click, to let you know it’s all the way in. If it doesn’t sit properly, try to twist it a bit.

Dear Sir, You can see how many units of insulin are left in the cartridge by looking at where the rubber stopper is on the insulin scale.

@Jeena: It depends on the type of insulin Ma'am. If it's a once daily basal insulin, it has to be taken at a particular fixed time daily, whereas if it's a premix insulin, it generally is taken few minutes before morning and evening meal.

Dear Sir,
There is always a tendency of the insulin pen to deliver insulin slowly due to the air bubbles in the cartridge. This causes dosing errors which means that the correct amount of insulin will not enter our body easily. In order to avoid this, we need to remove the air bubbles. For that, hold the pen with its needle pointing upwards. Then, gently tap the pen so that the bubbles rise to the top. Now, press the injection button and make sure you can see a drop of insulin on the tip of pen which indicates the absence of air bubbles. You can now recheck the dose and take your shot.

Writing this only for ladies who are having stretch marks on the stomach. Take injection on that stretch mark. No pain at all.
A general statement. While taking injection just role it and take the injection. There will be no pain.
It is commonly seen that injections are taken on the stretch marks for the simple reason that there is no pain associated with it. However, injection on the stretch marks inhibits adequate circulation and the insulin may not be absorbed properly or completely into the bloodstream, resulting in erratic blood glucose. So do not inject on the stretch marks.

How to change needle

Take a new needle, and tear off the paper tab.
Push the needle straight onto the pen. Turn until it is on tight. Pull off the outer needle cap and save it. You will need it after the injection, to safely remove the
needle from the pen. Always use a new needle for each injection. This reduces the risk of blocked needles, contamination, infection and inaccurate dosing.
Never use a bent or damaged needle. Do not attach a new needle to your pen until you are ready for your next injection.
Carefully pull off the inner needle cap. Always test the flow before you inject.This ensures that any gap and air bubbles are removed
and that insulin is getting through the needle. Dial the required dose in the pen and inject.
