Late spring in Germany. Cons: Cold and wet, foggy in the morning. Some weekends left with winch operations, a bit of hanggliding if I'm extra lucky. Pros: Tim starts uploading videos again :)
Nice video summary of a nice flight. Puretrack certainly adds to the fun. Nice to be able to see where the other aircraft are (and there were lots) and as a bonus to see where cloud streets are when deciding to go down the western side of Hamilton. Deep blue at the end.
That looked epic and thanks for sharing the flight. Puretrack is looking great as a moving map an a source for other traffic (Flaram and ADS-B in) along with the weather.
Thank you for this beautiful thrilling flight! I am presently only flying motorized stuff, was looking forward to picking up gliding in a club I became a member of just over a year ago specifically to achieve this goal. Unfortunately just like that cloud/thermal which disintegrated on you half way thru, that very club started disintegrating on me from within. Ignorant members are now talking about selling off the winch, they already lost the ASK21-MI they had, and they seem to be willing to shut down the club entirely. If they decide to sell the historical "Bergfalke" glider as well I'll try to obtain at least that and the winch and go off to somewhere else, where assets like those are appreciated...
Sorry to hear that! Is it a combined gliding and aero club? I've heard that can be a common thing to happen eventually, depending on who's on the committee, it can end up going the wrong direction, it's hard to keep the balance....
Hi Tim. I'm watching the latest America's Cup yacht racing and the broadcasters have some sort of device/sensor (laser?) to measures wind speed/pressure across the course and they translate that to a colourised graphic to inform the viewers as to which course is likely to offer the most advantage. Do you think this sort of tech could be applied for finding thermals in gliding? I'm thinking of some sort of overlay on your map or an augmented reality view showing where the thermals/updrafts are.
Hi, we almost do have that, but with the SkySight forecasts. They can show where the convergence lines and thermals are likely to be for example. I also have live wind from weather stations on PureTrack for New Zealand and France, so we are moving that direction!
To my humble opinion, if one day some company will invent a pair of goggle which shows where the thermals are, I will never buy that item because it will kill the fun of it! Same as to any on screen device up to detect thermal and updraft… I’ll consider it as doping! is in sports!! It definitely would turn off you sense of “feeling” the air as well as reading the sky’s condition and numb your instinct and thus shutting off the fun of the uncertainty by flying engineless. By the way, I am a hang glider pilot from Europe. Cheers
Luckily we already have a really good thermal indicating system. It's unbelievable, but someone put big white fluffy things on top of them! It's crazy ;)
That is very useful to know exactly where the sea breeze front is. 👍 So it is either the satellite- cheat to stay on the right side of the front in the convergence... Or it is the start- the- engine- cheat to get home when you end up on the wrong side?... 😁
When you turn final, have you previously announced whether you’re making a right had or left hand circuit, or is the circuit only on one side of your home field ?
Yes I had already done a proper downwind radio call, which is mandatory in NZ. That final call was a courtesy as I had another aircraft just behind me doing a tight circuit. Thus why I was brief. Technically I missed my full registration so don’t use that as an example of what to do :)
@@PureGlide I imagined you were using good procedures & your last few minutes were curtailed on the cutting floor post editing. Personally the full circuit/approach is one of the most interesting phases of flight & indeed videos
How is the controled airspace there ? Here we have a 4500 feet altitude restriction plus a lot of TMA and CTR and very unfriendly ATC .It's a bit better on Week ends .
We have a lot of airspace. In this case cloudbase was below 4500’ which was the limit in some places. A lot of our areas are 6500’ limit. So no problem! I went around the airport airspace which is lower (2500’)
Hi yeah I’d like to improve the offline handling. The current “locate me” button will work offline and keep updating your location and keep the map centred on you. But of course without data other aircraft location, and weather data gets out of date quickly.
I’m guessing within 5 years there will be an AI app available to recommend flight choices. People will argue it’ll take away all the fun, but I think you’ll also be able to compete with the model to get a relative score plus an analysis of what you did and recommendations on how to improve. You could end up with something analogous to a golf handicap.
Yeah who knows! quite frankly I enjoy the technology side of gliding, it's all part of the fun. There are many purists who don't want that stuff, and that's fine.
"It's Cheating!" People all said this about FLARM hence stealth mode and delayed tracking etc etc. In the UK I did the 18m Nationals in 2018, and was amazed at the levels people were going to in order to extend their FLARM reception - Antennas everywhere. One day winner in the 20m multiseat comp (also happening at the same time) erroneously blurted out about P2 watching things on web-based tracking from a mobile device as well whilst tactically delaying a start. How these guys are getting any fun out of that and winning on merit I can't really say, it certainly doesn't appeal to me. I doubt the top pilots in these fields are regularly doing this, but is there a place for it in moden competition flying or do we need to rely solely on our skills? How could that ever be fully and properly policed if it is never allowed? Nonetheless, this tech is great fun and a "tool in the box" from an expedition perspective for sure.
Just another cockpit distraction. You already know where that ridge line is, also its spring time down under with warmer air rising and those sea breezes startup right on schedule. So, you could have donated that Patreon Money to something less selfish.

Sounds delightful! Don't worry only another 6-7 months to go
Oh come on, late spring? This is autumn, soggy brown leafs everywhere, mist and rain. 😅
@@TDCflyer Um yeah I meant autumn.
Excellent tool! Great flight! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
A pleasure to watch this stuff, you're a great narrator

Great video Tim, really enjoyed it. I've done that route a few times but never in October (or November probably).
Yeah but unusual to get such good weather this early
Awesome Tim.
Thanks!
Nice flight. Enjoyed watching
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers
Cool - your season is starting - our thermal season just ended...
it sure is!

Awesome video. What kph did you get on that task?
I think it was 79km/h in the end, so not too fast! But was being more cautious than racing
Hopefully more videos now that the weather's picking up for you!
Maybe! We'll see :)
Some bits missing from your radio call at the end there Tim! I hear there’s a course on in November :P
haha I almost edited it out

@@PureGlide 😅🌤️
Is easy to spot when convergence is overdeveloped? The scale of it must be hard to comprehend sometimes.
When it starts raining is usually a bad sign!
I am wondering how often I would have ended up on a field with my Ka 6 trying crossing the blue stretch 😅
That is very useful to know exactly where the sea breeze front is. 👍

Quick question: why 2 tell-tails? redundency?
You’re in luck! I made a whole video about that Two Yaw Strings? That's Crazy!

@@PureGlide Thanks for the response!! Just saw the video... I'm going to stick a second 'yaw' string.
Will you be doing an Oudie n Review?
You know I filmed a review while flying, but can't remember when! so I've got the footage around somewhere... otherwise I'll have to do another one :)

I hope you weren't out yesterday, lots of TCUs that turned CBs later on!
Nope, it was the day before that! That's one reason we went out, because the next week or two look like a mess
I have one question does your field of view of earths surface always appear to be flat or round
Very much bowl shape. We live in a bowl. 🥣
It would be much more useful to have pureglide work out of cell coverage like foreflight does.
