Fellow Hungarian here. Since Hungarian language is amongst the 5 most difficult languages in terms of pronunciation and punctuation, I gotta say, your pronunciation of Füzesabony was very good.

OK but he constantly misstresses Hungarian words. As a result, I failed to get his "Keleti" and "Nyugati". He obviously doesn't know that Hungarian words are always stressed on the 1st syllable and his stressing on the 2nd one makes it really difficult to catch. No reproach involved, though, I'm just stating a fact, not blaming him.

For older train enthusiasts Hungary is a retro paradise, full of memories of German UIC stock in the 70,s/80,s. The livery looks very smart, I could almost imagine a powerful steam loco on the front. The thing is these retro looking trains still do the job and look nicely fitted out to modern requirements. Hungary is a lovely country too with nice friendly people everywhere, well worth a visit.

I have always loved the Hungarian jingles before PA announcements. They put me in a good mood, even if the announcement is that the train is delayed by several hours.

Wow, they have really cleaned up Budapest Keleti Station since I rode into town from Vienna via train in 2015....it was in a word..."frightening" back then. We did meet some nice Hungarian boys who had been to the US and dropped everything they were doing to tour us around Budapest for two days....making our visit to Budapest wonderful!!!!

Sometimes, Dylan, it's nice to go back in time. With all the gadgets and bright lights of modern state of the art trains, there is something rather enjoyable and comforting in the older stock. Couple that together with the very cheap prices of fares This was just lovely apart from the weather. Cheers, Bob

IMO Mav-Start gives a very good price to value ratio compared to other railway operators and bus companies.

From my experience travelling on the Hungarian Railways between Budapest and Subotica in Serbia a little over 10 years ago, I can see a vast improvement.
The Hungarian offer was in turn much better than that offered by the Serbian Railways in the other direction - I believe the only other place I have seen the tracks passing below from the toilet bowl was on a heritage railway running pre-war stock!
As you noticed, the price of a First Class ticket wasn't that much more, but for me, even though the experience was hardly first class, it was well worth it for having a carriage with hardly anyone in it when the rest of the train was packed!

  •  2 года назад +2

These are the coaches that we call 2G IC, abbreviated for second generation IC coach
Originally they are coaches of the Poznan factory, modernized in the Dunakeszi Járműjavító, hence the DVJ plaque on the stairs
In addition there is a bistro-business coach provided on some of these services

I lived in eastern Hungary (Miskolc) for about 9 months and used this route quite frequently to head to Budapest, so its pretty cool to see it on your channel. Though that 1st class is actually quite modern compared to some of the older inter-city stock. I recommend a trip along Lake Balaton from Deli to Keszthely for the thermal pools at Heviz. Some pretty scenic areas too along the west shore, castles, viewing towers and those ancient Soviet 'Pacers'

Great review Dylan. Keleti station is fantastic! Last time I was in Buda I got a train from one of the other stations (Nugati?) that was going to Bratislava on an evening train. Really comfy 1st class journey in a big spacious saloon just like that, and i think we got some food and drinks too. All was going well until about 10 mins from the destination when there was a massive flash outside, a horrendous banging along the roof and we screeched to a halt. Turns out the arm had been ripped off the locomotive so we were stuck without power and apparently fused the rest of the lines too. Took about 3 hours to do the last 2 km or so. Locals were just getting out and walking the rest of the way with their stuff but I wasn't keen.

It's interesting to note that information in most European stations you have visited is displayed in the important languages (obviously the 'home' language as well as) English and German. It seems the only place they use French (outside of France) is in Belgium and Monaco.

    • @mancubwwa

French is one of the official languages of Belgium as Belgium is trilingual. Flemish (Dutch) for the northern half of the country, French for the southern half of the country and in a small zone near Germany German is the official language.

Railjet Also goes to Frankfurt International airport via Hauptstrecke München Augsburg trains 63/66 from Budapest Keleti. For freight services ÖBB Rail Cargo runs them since ÖBB MAV Cargo in 2010-2012 now called ÖBB Rail Cargo Hungary. In some cases you will find ÖBB Rail Cargo Hungary locomotives inside Köln Hbf or Aachen Hbf. MAV 480 equals Germany DB BR185.2. Apee coaches should have a builder plate That says East Germany VEB Bautzen Because Comecon regulations will prohibit Hungary For making their own railway carriages then export them outside of Hungary.

Thanks! As usual, pleasant to watch. My compliments. I traveled by train fairly extensively in Hungary and I have no complaints, except the absence of catering. Yes, most of the equipment was dated, but functioned well. No springs through the seats. High speed does not exist, but as the trip was comfortable enough, I included it in my planning. I hope they changed the tickets. I once traveled with 8 EU workers from Budapest Deli (south) to Pécs and the paper strip I got was over 2 meters long. Staff on board and in the stations were friendly, especially if you know some basic Hungarian. What bothered me in this video, and in more videos, was the strange pronunciation of names. They sounded like funny English words, not Hungarian at all.

I’ve travelled quite a bit in Central/Eastern Europe and I can say that Hungarian trains are one of the most nostalgic. When I went to go and visit family, I was expecting one of those really nice intercity trains that they have in Poland. Nope! It was a 40 odd year old train, seats as hard as anything. But I just loved the journey!

Well - now think why. Most of the Polish trains are somehow supported from the EU funds (at least were). And think why in Hungary (and now also in Poland) they don't have the flow of the EU money. Think who rules the countries. Here is the answer to the huge lack of funds.

Not bad from what I saw, and whilst the coaches could have been a bit more modern, they're still functional. Also, I prefer the older rolling stock, because the newer rolling stock is more likely to block out mobile phone and other signals - not idea if your train either (a) has no Wi-Fi fitted, or (b) the Wi-Fi is so slow that you can't do anything with it.
Also, that price is pretty amaing, especially 1st class. For example, my normal commute, which only takes 30 minutes, costs £25.80 return, and that's in standard class!

One of the things I have noticed is that the dominance of EMUs/DMUs seems uncommon in many of these videos. A similar journey in the UK would likely be a 317, 323 or 350, but definitely not loco hauled.

I wish we still had various diesel or electric locomotives, with various coaches to go with them. Sadly, most of the Mk3s have been scrapped, and chances are, the Mk4s will go that way too, because there's not many loco services anymore, they're all either DMUs or EMUs.

Retro? It's not retro the second generation IC cars (Apee 10-44, earlier: Ap 10-67 and second class version is Bpee 20-44, earlier: Bp 20-67), these are maybe 25 years old, it's will be in circulation, although it can be not in IC later, but also fast trains. The locomotive (3:27 - 4:07), than it's call "Szili" (it's have got silicon diode rectifier, not call these machine are "Szilárd", Szilárd is hungarian man name, woman's version is "Szilárda".) are retro, because they are between 50 and 60 years old. Serial numbers the various versions: 430 /GYSEV, in Sopron/ 431/than you see, the basic design, maybe going to the "trash bin" in Sátoraljaújhely, if come the Siemens Vectron's here./, 432 /Is the Pendulum train locomotive, the full rake is call Postal (the car's same color design about the part of ex postal service cars) or call Swallow pendulum train/, 433 /Is the Pendulum locomotive to, but make in around the turn of the millennium, because came form Germany 300 pieces Halberstadter car.
The Bombardier TRAXX (Plate number is 002, I mean: H-START 91 55 0480 002-9), which then pulled the train, changed design in June 2022 from praying mantis to the writer, for who's name is Áron Tamási yet.

One time when I was like 8 or so I was returning from a 'holiday' on Lake Balaton with my mother. She had one of her acquaintances take us up to Komárom, where we stayed the night, and took a train down to Keleti where we would have changed to one heading to Miskolc (it's the next big and important station after Füzesabony), EXCEPT our train from Komárom was late. We had to run from one side of the station to the other with our luggage, apparently losing a pair of slippers along the way. In the end, the train we took was 2 minutes late because of us, but we made it aboard thanks to the kindness of one of the conductors.
The IC trains between Keleti and Nyugati are the result of the following: after the Treaty of Trianon, a secondary line connecting two essential main lines that were then halfed by the borders was upgraded to a mainline, thus creating a loop, made up of lines 80 via the north and 100 via the south to Tokaj, interchanging with secondary lines along the way at major junction stations such as Füzesabony.

A lot of these Budapest-Keleti - Budapest-Nyugati IC trains are now equipped with a brand new multifunctional 1st class carriage which includes regular 1st class, a bistro/bar section and some Business Class seats even!

What at is the logo on the train's engine at 8:54? It looks very eucharistic with a chalice and host. Is it a Christian symbol, or am I imagining it?

It was probably decorated for the global eucharistic congress held earlier in Budapest

Dylan, I enjoyed seeing Keleti train station again after my August 2019 summer trip to Budapest. I always like a nice summer rainy day in Europe. The first class seating looked dirty. I am going to buy a head rest cover to protect my head from other people's dirty hair folicles. Eeww! The 2nd class seating looked more enjoyable. I'd of preferred 2nd class. You're right about buying you own food outside of the train station. I bought a large coffee and danish from McDonald's across the street from Keleti. Nice nostalgic video. Thanks for taking me back to Budapest!

Well, the station and especially platforms look like they need renovation. But in my opinion I can see a huge lack of the EU funds here - and the question is: Is it because of the rather authoritarian Hungarian government?

1h around Budapest, most stations are fully renovated. Like so many parts in Hungary, Budapest is near unrecognizable some places. Further away you can/must still walk over the tracks and have only 1 departure info panel. Has its charm.

The capital and the central region are above EU average, so no funding from cohesion fund is available here and the government can't be arsed to put additional funding on top of EU funds
