I heard of train companies freezing their ticket prices but freezing their customers is going too far !
If British operators don't cancel your trains for made up reasons you get more heating for a leg and an arm
Once, a Norrtåg train broke down for more then two hours on the Luleå and Kiruna track in the middle of winter and the outside temperature at the time was -40°! Now that is scary! 🥶 They were very lucky that locals nearby offered them coffee and blankets to cope.
Keeps them fresh?
Eh we're used to that up North, no biggie
5:45 The pronunciations of the town names were spot on, didn't expect that!
Thanks!
as a German, I'd've absolutely screwed up all of them
"spot on" was a stretch, but not bad. Dude nailed the hardest part, grave accent for Södertälje.
Edit: and acute accent for Hallsberg.
Quite impressive!
.
Ever since I read that Jönköping is basically pronounced as "gone shopping", I've decided not to bother with Swedish pronunciation. Although it could it be worse: it could be Danish.
@@SeverityOne Denmark doesn't exist
It appears that no matter the country, there's an extremely narrow range of outside temperature where a Flixtrain ride isn't a form of self-imposed torture. When it's not freezing you'll be sweating your balls off thanks to no A/C onboard. This makes you choose between a sauna and going deaf from the open windows when zooming through long tunnels at 200km/h.
That being said, one of my mates took a Flixtrain last week and they reached his stop 20 minutes too EARLY! Deutsche Bahn could never
To be fair, that also occasionally happens with DB, but they will then wait on one of their intermediate stops for the schedule departure time and not just set off because they can. Imagine you would get to the train station 5 mins before scheduled departure time, and the announcement board would happily tell you that the train is already gone because it was a few mins early today 🤣
@@marcd6897 or sometimes the train is waiting right before the station, rendering your saved time completely useless lmao
True! Especially because you can’t open Flixtrains windows fully anymore, and they cramp too many people in there.
I frequently travel by train in the Czech Republic, and there I don’t mind the old carriages, actually on the contrary. You can fully open the window, stand next to the window and feel the breeze in your face. And during the pandemic even have a quick break without a mask. Those carriages don’t get too hot in my opinion, as long as the windows are open.
I also arrived early on DB once. :D
@@sxflyer5410 you still have to wear masks over there??? Glad I'm Dutch lol
@@ukeyaoitrash2618 in the Czech Republic no. I was more referring to last summer. But in Germany it’s still mandatory.
In crowded indoor spaces I still wear a mask tho, my sister has currently Covid and it is still no joke. Relatively harmless because she doesn’t need to go to the hospital, but still not fun. As I don’t want to stay at home because I’m sick, but enjoy life instead. :)
Edit: btw, when I was in the Netherlands in October, you guys already did not wear masks in supermarkets etc. and I found that super weird and way too early. And just weeks later the Netherlands went into a lockdown… I prefer wearing a mask than a lockdown tbh.
Sweden looks beautiful but I was cold just watching! Brrrr!
Honestly, if 4 of the 5 toilets are out of order, the train shouldn't be running. That's ridiculous.
The interior of your departure station and exterior of the arrival station were stunning.
Thanks for taking us along, Dylan. See you on Friday!
I do think it's a bit less bad than it sounds though concerning the toilets. These german wagon cars generally have toilets in every car, often two per car (one on either side) though I guess these specific 60s/70s IR coaches "only" had one (or they took the other one out when refurbishing) per wagon.
Compare it to many modern EMU sets and you suddenly stack up only slightly short with just 1 out of 5 toilets working. Many stadler FLIRT or KISS configurations only have one or two per entire unit, and more and more operators are using them for medium distance in Europe. In the Netherlands, the flagship 'Koploper' stock used on long distance lines only has one toilet per three carriage EMU, often it breaks down and you have to then switch to a coupled EMU at the next station. In Japan there's medium distance lines feeding into commuter lines in big cities that still use the same commuter stock, meaning no toilet at all for sometimes 1.5-2hr trips.
I think a reasonable number of toilets for medium or long distance trains should be at least 1 per 100-150 seats, at least one working toilet reachable for every seat by walking within the train. This flixtrain was very far from meeting the former (though it would have if all toilets were operational), and rightly called out for it, but I would definitely like to see similar scrutiny for, for example, above mentioned examples then.
The train in this video must have had 2 toilets per coach except in the accessible coach, where there was just 1 toilet (the accessible one).
IMO, 4 out of 5 toilets being faulty is bad, but especially so when the only accessible toilet is also out of service.
Though at least it's not as bad as EMR Connect in the UK, where a Class 360 has just 1 toilet per 4 car unit (yes it is accessible) and today it was out of order on the train I got, so requiring the toilet would mean getting off your train and taking the next one in 30 minutes time...
I'm surprised Flix didn't just cancel the journey as there was inadequate heating and no accessible toilet. Guess there is no such regulation in Sweden. As slways, Dylan I look forward to your videos as they always assure me a quick journey to another city. Vacationing from my armchair. :)
Lagom. Good enough. They are not the only train service. Pay more, get more. Some people are too spoiled these days.
Those countries like Norway, Sweden and Finland really does has the best winter sensory when travelling on the railways there.
Can confirm the carriages aren't made for Scandinavian winter conditions. Traveled Snälltåget last Christmas and the couchette carriage had the exact same issue with the windows.
oh but in the spring and summer months it’s amazing to open the window when crossing the Øresund Bridge and Great Belt Connection, having amazing views of the sea underneath and the stars above you! Traveled on their Stockholm-Berlin train recently and it was such a unique experience, loved it!
And for the obvious reasons mentioned, this is exactly why you’ll find me aboard the SJ X2000 (First Class) when I travel between Gothenburg and Stockholm 😉👍🏻. The newly renovated trains (engines are painted black) are very comfortable and quiet.
X-2000 are so beautiful 😍👌Finest quality.
Gothenburg, my hometown! And btw I was really impressed when you pronounced the Swedish names, like Södertälje, Hallsberg or Skansen lejonet! That was really good!
......this Train was allowed to operate with no heating and only one lavatory ?
I always thought that Sweden was a high standard Nation however, this seems to suggest it is not ! How much ( in £ ) is it from Stockholm to Gothenburg on the main State Railway ? Do they have heating ? Can we listen to Abba songs while travelling ? Thanks Man ........Abe ( uk )
@@abeonthehill166 flixtrain tho is the Ryanair of the trains, does not have much to do with ''nation'' quality...
@@lkrnpk …..always thought the Swedes were a high class, high standard Nation. I drive Trucks and Swedish Trucks are great to drive and i never had a bad experience in one yet. This seemed very odd to me that it would be allowed in Sweden .
Great video in spite of the lacklusting journey with FlixTrain. May I suggest a small contribution? It'd be great if before the video finishes, around the moment the train is about to enter the final station, you inserted on screen some Pros and Cons of the experience such as ✅ Great Price and Modern Interiors and❌ Lack of heating, Toilets out of order, no catering etc etc. I believe it would wrap up the experience totally. Just my two cents 👍🏼👍🏼
I agree
That shatters the popular belief that the Swedes are well organised and can compensate for the extremes of temperature they get.
that’s because Flixmobility (which includes Flixbus and Flixtrain) is a German company. They don’t have the swedish expertise. They just saw the opportunity to run their trains in Sweden because of how easy the access for private companies is on the swedish railway network, and just moved some of their German locos and carriages from Germany to Sweden and that’s it…
_"Popular_ belief"? Amongst who, exactly? 🤣
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this review. I thought the FlixTrain interior looked excellent for a 50 year old coach. But I was shivering watching!
Hey Dylan ... its so nice to see you ...Nice to have met you ...
Nice decoration at the arrival station ... thanks for the ride folk!!!
Great video !!
actually all these oldie coaches (Amz, Bmz, Bmpz) that show themselves around austrian OBB, Ceske Drahy, Deutsche Bahn or some ex. Yugoslavian operators are extremely comfortable for their ages - (eg. Bmz232 appearing in CD are around 43-44 years old!). Lots of them actually feature AC and proper heating, so, believe me, riding in some extreme winter temperatures does not actually affect yours journey comfort. I rode in one of them a year ago, when the most extreme winter of the decade came to Poland, so the temperatures varied between -15 and -20 degrees, and was extremely disappointed to leave that cozy heat in Katowice :p
love the back window, especially on Amtrak
Nice loco, how disapointing that the carriages were so cold to ride 🥶
Here in Finland winter temperatures used to go from -10c to -25c, but the old VR long distance coaches (from the sixties) were always warm and comfy. I kinda miss them, although the toilets were scary 😆
Your European trips are 100% more interesting than your North American journeys.
Maybe because European trains are way more interesting than Amtrak. Don’t get me wrong, I love our long distance trains (California Zephyr, Empire Builder, and Southwest Chief) but the rolling stock is old, the schedule mere fantasy, and food hit or miss, but the scenery is sensational. That said, Europe really has rail together. I’d love to take a lot of your trains when I get back over to that side of the pond.
@@da5ve That's what makes American trains so interesting to European viewers. It's always interesting to see something new weird, unfamiliar and/or old fashioned!
@@da5ve I live in Europe and I was excited like a little kid when I did a coast-to-coast Amtrak trip in summer 2021! It was an unbelievably and incredibly spectacular trip, one of the best trips I ever did!
I actually think Amtrak’s long distance trains are better than the night trains in Europe. I wish I could hop on a train in Berlin and stay on that train until for example Madrid without the need to change trains, just like how I was able to take a direct train from Chicago to San Francisco (Emeryville).
I have a bad bladder so I would more than likely need to use the restroom 3 times an hour, of course after my second trip I would go in disguises. The otherwise the passengers would be like ,oh there he goes again? Is he peeing in there or what?
Wow I am really impressed, you pronounced most of the places almost exactly as we do here in Sweden!
No heating is right out of order in Sweden at that time of year.. Travelled this route a few years ago by S.J. Comfortable but more expensive. Good video Dylan ..
Given what I saw with the lack of heating and toilets, I'd have just canceled the service and set up ticket acceptance with other operators.
thank you
Excellent production and commentary per usual.
Thank you 😁
Thanx for a very interesting and informative video on FlixTrains in Sweden. will be checking in more in days to come. and Hope you enjoyed your stay in Sweden at a mere minus 12 degrees c.a thumbs up for me.
Can’t say I would ever want to travel on a three hour train ride in freezing weather without heat, or any commercial transportation for that matter. Knowing where they are, you would think FlixTrain would be on top of the heat situation.
Funny thing...In sweden you're freezing inside a Flixtrain in winter, in german summer you're toasted due to the lack of AC.
Many Flix customers say they prefer the slower Flixbus over the faster Flixtrain because they find the buses more comfortable.
Good report. I rode a Flixbus from Wash DC to New York and it was fine. Same fare as what you paid for the train ride out of Gothenberg.
I'm literally inside a Flixtrain ride from Hamburg to Berlin and it is freezing inside!! Was wondering whether it's a practice of them not heading their trains to save costs so google it and came across this video! We are all with our hats and jackets and it's still very cold!! Completely unacceptable in the middle of the winter with minus temperatures outside!
It didn’t click with me until this video that FlixTrain is under the same brand as the buses I’ve used running from New York back to Baltimore and PG County. Buses seem to run fine, though it’s a shame the trains can’t handle the winter well. Perhaps they should try using coaches more native to the region on these runs. Sure it might not be of the same “standard” but they’re more accustomed to climate
Imagine walking past all those SJ X2000 and having to deal with the flix train
I lived in both Gothenburg and Stockholm. My, how Gothenburg station has changed! There used to be just a few bars and a newsagent. I think I'll stick to the X2000, money well spent! By the way, your pronunciation was pretty damned good.
Thanks 😁
My experience with Flixtrain in Sweden was great, no problems at all.
The sunset footage was beautiful.
My daughter and I will be using Flixtrain for the first time this summer in Germany.
From this video they do seem very clean and roomy.
Thanks for the review.
They really are. Specially for that price. But i can tell you: Don't take the seats with the table. It's not much space there^^
Took Flixtrain myself two times from Berlin to Cologne and back, one time to Hamburg and back.
@@BruscoTheBoar thanks for the advice about the table.
We're going to be doing Hannover to Cologne and maybe other spur of the moment ones from Hannover. What sort of time frame do you recommend for booking seats.?
@@stephanierobb6208 The earlier the better. Book as soon as you know when to travel. But usually you can already get a good fare one week in advance.
Try to avoid weekends.
Everything from the doors to the windows lets in draughts on that stock. Flixtrain are stipid to run it up there, but I guess it makes for standardisation of their fleet, all of which is leased.
To get me off SJ, they'd have to pay ME to ride it! 🤣 Great review, Dylan.
SJ is amazing! Traveled on their X2000 recently and loved it!
Can understand that lol. 2nd class on a X2000 gives the 1st class on a Deutsche Bahn ICE a run for it's money
I wish CFR refurbished their old 60-70 stock like these ones on Flixtrain, they really look ok
The pigeons in the train station tho-
Well...it got you there, but you're right, no heat in a Swedish winter and 4 out of 5 non-functional toilets, and you don't even really save a lot of money, makes you understand why the train was so empty.
If you plan to take anything into a Polar Region, like a Caravan or Railway Coach, it must be polarised, meaning all windows must be triple glazed, all walls, bulkheads and ceilings, must be multi-layered with correct thickness of insulation. You don't want people and fare paying custommers, arriving dead at their destination, now do you? FlixTrain needs to think again, on this!
Cheap way of travelling without any comfort. Oh well, each to their own. Lovely vid as always.
Dylan: "It's really cold!"
Swedes: don't bother with either hats or gloves
Myself, in the Mediterranean: wearing a hoody in May
-12 what,s the fuzz about?
Amazing and stay healthy wealthy and blessed.
I suspect the reason for no heat is that this particular Vectron is a freight loco! There is another operator on the Western Main Line, namely Snelltåget. I have had no issues with them. There may be two more operators coming along soon.
The netherlands and germany used some vectrons, they provided heating.........
The loco does have train heating, the heating cable is visible at 3:38.
As a swede I think SJ, at present, is having the better product. And the X2s (X2000) has now been refurbished (again) and is now do not look their age (in a good way). And I do not think the £1to £5 difference in price makes up for FlixTrain. Lastly I do not think more operators is good for us, since there is limited capacity for scheduling and this has already made regional schedules less frequent as a consequence (i.e. the commuter train between Stockholm and Gnesta).
That's just too cold for this south Texan!!
At -12 no heat is better as heaters that run nonstop and having over 40° C in the coach. Had the experience once on a ÖBB train 1/2 no heat the other 1/2 the heat did run at 100% non stop
great video dylan mate
€19 for a low-cost seat? What is this? Ryanair Deluxe?
Basically 😂
I am now obsessed with ryanair memes-
-12 is nothing once when I was in Stockholm it was -28! Stockholm harbour freezes over but they break the ice so the ferries can run . Funnily enough the green of Flix Train looks like the green of Green Cargo which was the freight part of SJ but is run as a separate state corporation now and I don't think SJ do freight now? Looks like it lines up with the very Highlands of Scotland, Kirkwall, Orkney! You might spy some of the very rare but beautiful Nacreous Clouds, aka Polar Stratospheric Clouds, from up there in winter. The second highest cloud type and way above the tropospheric clouds so lit when the Sun is under the horizon.
-28?We call it real winter.Lovely.
Freezing cold car, four out of five restrooms on the fritz, no cafe or vending machines-that’s intolerable. Also unfathomable that management doesn’t provide better service, considering how much better competing rail lines happen to be.
Maybe if the train made a pitstop in the wilderness every 45 minutes in a safe area, to let the passengers off that had to pee. Just let er go in the snow. I would hate to ruin my new corduroy pants waiting in line.
Wauuu sweden is my favourite country after japan and russia 😛 and Sweden is famous about they product is good thats why we like it
I hate those tight and uncomfortable airplane seats in trains. It‘s real cost cutting rubbish.
Please do a Dutch trip report 🥺🙏
Why does Flixtrain use cars that get cold in a Swedish winter? Didn't they test them? A "No" for me even if the toilets worked. I do appreciate that you take all classes and types of trains giving a wide view of train travel. By chance I watched Nonstop Eurotrip yesterday and he was making a 12 hour trip from Umea to Gothenburg in a sleeping compartment of a luxury train. Needless to say, he loved it.
"Reminds me of an old chapel"
It practically *IS* an old chapel
50/50
great video,,,
On the surface this looks like a great train adventure until you come onboard and the train departs the station. From this point on you are at the mercy of this locomotive. With it's art deco hard surface seats. I must say, there is no doubt in my mind that after being seated for 30 minutes, I would have given up on thought of finding a comfortable position to sit in. Also the lack of heat would be an issue but not a game changer. The cold cars would become part of the adventure that you can tell your family about how you froze on a train going over 100 mph. What could be worse? One working toilet, is the answer to that question! That would be a game changer for me. Lucky for you that the other passengers appear to be docile, so one person would not tie up the restroom for very long. Some people are not very adapted to holding it in when they need to go to the lavatory. All told I would make a mental note not to use this carrier anymore, but it was still a very interesting trip with outstanding views. Just don't eat a lot of food prior to boarding. Can you imagine waiting for the toilet and 10 people ahead of you all had bowel movements? You did mention the air ventilation system does not work very well?
Maybe the reason why the Flix train was only a quarter full was because people who live in that area know that SJ and MTRX are better, so used those trains instead!
I did notice that some of the windows appeared to be open - and of course, having one toilet out of five is not good, but it's especially a no-no if the toilet that does work isn't the accessible one. Believe it or not there are quite a few people out there who require mobility access, so for them to not be able to use basic facilities on the train is very disappointing.
In Sweden SJ is synonymous with trains. Open access operators are rarely given a thought. MTRx and Snälltåget have carved out a niche as a high speed alternative, and an option for international night trains respectively. But the demand for low cost low cost services are near nil when MTRx is only marginally more expensive but has superior service in every way
As Lando would say: *IT'S BWOKEN!*
I have to ask.......How long did it take you to thaw out after arriving at Stockholm? Nice train interior but definitely spartan service with four out of five toilets out of action and no on train catering. And the cost plus fare system!! I think I'd tell Flix to 'Flick Off' and go by SJ. Thanks for suffering on our behalf.
9:13 is that a British loco parked up?
when you are in sweden you need to test TÅGAB

No Flixtrain for me. Way to cold😮💨
Hope you tried Plopp whilst in Sweden 🍫
Doesn't _look_ like 50yr old coach stock, but it certainly feels like it! 🥶
Would be a solid 5/10, but putting a train in servive with only 1 of 5 toilets working _(and_ *NOT* _the accessible toilet),_ brings that down to *3.5/10.*
Avoid unless able-bodied, cold-resistant and an over-zealous bargain hunter (or some combo of the three!) 💀🪦
Having travelled on coaches like this, I can assure you that the lack of accessible toilet is not an issue, since a wheelchair wouldn't even fit on board properly. Most of the old railway stock isn't disabled friendly at all, back in the day the attitude was basically, if you are disabled, don't travel.
Hast du schon den FlixTrain in Deutschland ausprobiert? Weil es ist ja eigentlich ein Deutsches Unternehmen…
Not good! I'll definitely be taking SJ if I ever decide to take this route.

As you say the carriages look great and comfortable but not having toilets working or on board food plus the lack of heating really is a no no.
Why do people always need a leak for just a three hour journey? Go before you get onboard?

What is it with Europe and not having high level platforms as the case in Australia. Makes boarding the train so much harder especially for older and disabled passengers.
yeah they're also not allowed to raise platforms because of interoperability regulations from 550/760mm - pretty dumb imo, but would be pretty difficult to change completely
Haha to the old and disabled
UK Platforms are higher - just like Aus.
@@barrieshepherd7694 the platforms are fine - there are old people everywhere and they do fine. As for the other category staff are very helpful in getting them off and off
Putting trains in service without a functioning disabled/accessible toilet is arguably even worse.
i suspect you ran into an old railway trick... close 4 out of 5 toilets and save lots of time & money on cleaning. Turn off the heater and save even more!
Don't tell Ryanair that trick
@@garethsmith2250 Damn you got me☠️
Lets hope Ryanair didn't watch this video
The main reason we had issues with the heat and the toilets last winter was due to all of our coaches undercarriages being smashed up by gravel, so they were replaces by atrociously poor coaches that were driven in from Germany as an emergency measure. We've also had new rules for how to act when the toilets fail, and if we have too few per passenger we will cancel our departures.
Quite fair review, thank you.
FlixTrain and other low-cost rail operators are the railway version of low-cost airlines like Ryan Air. Uncomfortable seating, low quality service, terrible customer service and, in FlixTrain's case, a garish neon paint scheme that just screams cheap. IMO these operators are also unnecessary because national rail operators are perfectly capable of providing high-quality service at a variety of price points. Austria's ÖBB is a good example. Franchising out routes and lines serves no practical purpose. It exists only because of ideological reasons (state mandated capitalism).
At its worst you get FlixTrains-like outfits run on the cheap (or the hodgepodge of operators in the UK that replaced British Rail only to run mediocre services at premium rates). When I am travelling in Europe I will gladly pay a little but more and use full-service train operators that provide a quality service. I realize there are a few exceptions to this rule but generally it holds up and you do get what you pay for.
Well, look at Finland for example. We only have one operator and that's VR. Though the ride quality and pricing are excellent, the company has been so unwilling to expand its routes and improve services to other places in the country (Rauma, Uusikaupunki etc.). They're doing all they can to stop any kind of competition on the railways to enter, just to protect their monopoly, and this becomes expensive for the taxpayers. And our current government has long been in favour of state monopolies, even though the opposition has been trying to change this. Even my home city region hasn't had any local rail service since 1993 (hopefully restarts in 2024). Finland used to have the majority of its trains as local trains, more express trains, and more diverse routes like you could get more easily by rail from the west coast of Satakunta to the east of Northern Karelia.
On your wander through the train I noticed many winter coats hung up. Maybe they are more used to the frigid temperatures.
Maybe, I hate being cold 😅
