PR is out of control!! No one person needs the excessive amount of things sent. I am now in the situation where I want a smaller collection, but due to over consumption I am here with a huge amount of makeup I don't want and struggle to get rid of. You and Shawna are my go to when I struggle and want to buy all the new😂

I think a lot of us feel guilt about the size of our collections but a huge part of it is the effective marketing of beauty brands - it’s not all on us as consumers

I've begun to be ever more critical about PR. I've been on RUclips long enough to see it change people's content and mindset. I don't mind someone getting PR to test for people but it simply has a lot of negative effects rendering content biased, dishonest or just useless as unhelpful. Plenty creators feel obligated to post PR and be grateful. There is also a wish to continue receiving PR especially w brands that are more selective and don't send out much PR or simply to receive free product to create content/make money off and that's a clear incentive to be largely positive about a brand and stay on the list. I've watched a lot of people that are usually seen as "honest" long enough to have seen a number of clearly dishonest or misleading reviews from most of them or them changing their whole opinion about brands or kinds of products. they usually exposed themselves later ( involuntarily) down the line. I'm exclusively talking about smaller /midi channels here non of the "big bad influencers". My fav is when brands are looked down upon, criticised or dissed BEFORE they start sending PR or even better AFTER they stopped sending PR. I've seen "wonderful" "one of my faves" "unique" "high quality, thoughtful" "special" brands never be mentioned again or suddenly talked badly about the moment they stopped sending that person PR. They told me how amazing and totally worth MY money this stuff was they got completely for free and with preferred treatment but weren't willing to buy even a single item with their own money which would be a business expense. That tells you all you need to know about a creator and the level of quality of reviews you will get from them.

I had multiple packages coming every week, it seems so normal, it was the reason to go out of bed or be excited for. Glad I found a healthy relationship with stuff now. Just left with tons of old makeup and clothes. Hope to have a small collection some day. Thank you for making this video, I really love your content.

In a way I would love to get free makeup because I love trying new formulas and colors, but I also feel like it’s completely out of control and I hate how much waste this is creating. I feel like there should be a discount instead of just getting it for free, like a staff discount for influencers😅 That way people would have to make conscious decisions about what they wanted to try and actually purchase the items themselves instead of just receiving stuff they even kniw about beforehand

Love the integrity. I don't follow makeup channels or skinfluencers that have something to sell, incl those that aren't paid, because there's still incentive if they're sending free stuff. I just feel like I can't trust a word they say. Also vegan and anti-consumerism, so I'm happy I found you :)

That makes sense, I see so many influencers reviewing products after they’ve used them ONCE. I feel like I go on a rollercoaster ride with a lot of makeup with how many phases I have in terms of my feelings towards products 😅

Great video as always! ❤ A topic that is a bit controversial but I think should be talked about is clean / non toxic beauty. Similar to PR, there are greenwashing and people say they don't last as long with no preservatives.
But I've seen doctors online talk about how alot of everyday stuff have harmful chemicals that will leech to our bodies overtime, with facts backing up. Dr. Yvonne Burkart and Dr. Vivian Chen were 2 who I've seen talk about this.
Right now I'm doing a no buy and this has been helpful to curb my spending as most products on the shelf are full of chemical ingredients that are not digestible to the average consumer.

Yes absolutely! And so many companies are jumping on the green/clean bandwagon because it’s profitable - not just exclusive beauty brands but clothing stores, airlines, everything

Yes, I believe I did hear The Financial Diet talk with a guest about the fact that influencers aren’t required to disclose products or services they’ve received through sponsorships or PR in future content. Your pillow example exactly! I think it’s so important to have social media literacy and to consider things like that, because of course it stands to reason that we see influencers’ lifestyles online and forget that they might have gotten that stuff for free! Like watching a pack with me-were they gifted their suitcase, their packing cubes, their travel bottles? Maybe this video isn’t sponsored, but it’s still stuff they received from previous sponsored content. It’s so… honestly, kind of insidious.

Not sure if the free gifts at hotels means that they're working with the hotel. If it's a very expensive and luxurious room, sometimes they do give out those kind of gifs like chocolate and champagne along with a note. Probably to try and earn the favour of their customers so that they're more likely to come back to their hotel.
I agree that PR and undisclosed gifts are a tricky matter. Influencers can't always make sure that they're disclosing everything in every single posts or videos, and even if theoretically, having free stuff shouldn't influence their judgement, I'm sure it does. People might judge a product they bought more harshly because they expect the product to at least be worth the amount of money they spent on it, while if it's free, they don't have the same kind of expectations. Or maybe, it's the opposite, since it's free, they might not have any calms in judging more harshly the product while if they were to spend the money for it, they might unconsciously try their best to like the product better so that they can justify to themselves that the product truly was worth looking for it and purchasing it.

I want to put out a counterpoint to your hotel stay theory. There is a reality that the infuencer is not partnering with the hotel or getting their stay covered just beacuse they get a note and a bottle of champagne, they just might be high level loyalty members of that brand (which obvi is another kind of privalge). The reason why I point this out is beacuse I am a regular person who travels on a semi-consistant basis for work. When traveling domestically and internationally, I have gotten hand written welcome notes, wine, treats, etc. upon arrival and in my room. I didn't technically pay for the goods or partner with the hotel (other than defaulting to that hotel group). Same goes for flights and free upgrades.
