For that you can use Displace modifier and then collapse the modifier stack to keep the mesh with displacement applied! (the regular Displace modifier affects the mesh in your viewport, render, and everywhere, while the Vray displacement modifier would only affect your render.)
You can customize a hotkey - "next modifier" and "previous modifier" under "Main UI" and "All commands". There's also a script that does this but just uses a single command (keystroke) then loops back to the top after reaching the bottom to simplify it to a single keystroke - called: _"shortcut - Modifier Stack Jump and Loop"_

Sorry, did I miss some step? When you select the pattern to make render to texture, the object is with turbosmooth off, isnt it?
Maya let's you bake out the meshes with displacement applied. Is that something you can do in 3ds max?
