This film acts as the prelude to a large-scale collaborative documentation of the night skies above Dorset, England. Dorset is the only county in the UK without a city, with the county town being Dorchester. In vast swathes of the region, stargazing is a delight and an absolute pleasure.
This video was created by Bridport filmmaker Stephen Banks (aka DorsetScouser: about.me/Dorset.... The final Dorset by Night film will be shot by photographers across the county, so that a more accurate rendition of Dorset can be made. That gave me chills, made me feel small, made me feel infinite, and made me think. Thank you!
This is a labour of love, superb filming and effects.
Thanks for featuring the video on your page. It has become my first source for time lapse inspiration!
Absolutely brilliant, I love the beauty of Dorset and this is very special. Found your site via a plug on BBC Radio Solent just now.
I saw my first ever meteorite. Here in Dorset last month it was amazing. I cant believe. How clear thr nights skies are here and how many stars you can. See im blessed to be living here love it
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. I did a short interview with Steve on the drive time show, about 1hr 25min in. You can find it on iPlayer if you want to find out a bit more about the project.
This so extraordinarily brilliant!I'm really moved and impressed.
This is brilliant! You've captured some gem shots! Well done.
Stunning work, some of the best skies in Europe without doubt. Grew up on the Somerset/Dorset border and I remember the dark skies like those shown in this video, oh how I wish the whole of the U.K was privileged enough to have skies as beautiful as these.
Very great stuff! Videos like this are what inspires me to go out and keep trying to improve my night time-lapse.
It was Sculpture by the Lakes. Simon Gudgeon was fantastically accommodating for me to come down and do a night shoot. Beautiful location!
Beautiful piece of footage Stephen - particularly loved the lighthouse and shooting stars!
Absolutely stunning!
What a great film, it must of taken you a long time to do. The music works really well too. It's made me feel very homesick!
Frances
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. It was done on a Mac using Adobe Lightroom, iStopMotion HD and Final Cut Pro 7 and X.
Thanks for your kind words. That shot was created by stacking each exposure on top of the other one, using Photoshop and a lighten layer mode. Long process and I believe there's a few automated processes out there to achieve the same effect.
Love that first sculpture shot; "I AM THE GUARDIAN OF FOREVER" ;D
Thank you, it stemmed from my first video, Bridport by Night. Can't post the link here for some reason, but search and you'll find it straight away.
What a literally brilliant video!
Thank you Frances. It took about 4 months of shooting whenever the night skies were clear. We haven't had the best of summers here, so it's been harder than I expected to meet the August 11th deadline. Please share it with your friends and family and make them fell homesick/envious :)
I did hear your informative and inspiring interview with Steve!
Subscribed.
Stunning stuff!
Beautiful............
Thank you, feel free to share it around :)
Great video. The time it must have taken is enough but the quality is amazing! The ideas... The time lol. Very nice!
You made an ex-pat very homesick. Wonderful piece of work.
Thank you Emma. I have followed you on Twitter and Pinterest with my personal account. Look forward to hearing more from you. Glad you enjoyed the video. Plenty more to come in the future. Got a remake of 'Bridport by Night' in the pipelines. You can find the first one on RUclips, on my personal account.
Thank you Natalie. Keep at it and post your pictures/videos on the Facebook page
Another great film!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. Be sure to share it with your friends and family to help boost Dorset tourism :)
It certainly does! Thank you, be sure to share the video with your friends!
That shot was on top of Eggardon Hill and was shot in May.
Thanks for subscribing. Lots more to come from this project...
Glad you enjoyed the film. Please share it with your friends and family to help boost Dorset as a stargazing venue! Sounds good to me - whereabouts are you in the county?
We also so so many shooting stars too we have seen about 30 last month
Thank you for your kind words. Yes, it's peaking at the moment, and the ISS is making some very bright passes in the evenings. Unfortunately I've been too busy to capture any of it. Maybe tonight...
Thank you for your kind words. Be sure to share it with your friends and family :)
Beautiful!
Cheers, please feel free to share it around :)
Apologies for that, but glad that you enjoyed the video. Please share with all your friends and family to make them feel the same way!
Wonderful, a great idea!
Thank you!
That's some good work there! I've just started doing a lot of star time lapse stuff myself but one question. How do you time lapse into star trails (2,23) cuz that is cool as!!! Thanks
Love this video. I'm a local blogger and I'm featuring it on a weekly round-up tomorrow :)
Is there any chance to get that song in good quality? (I really would pay for it)
Still hoping ...
where in dorset did you find those sculptures of the heads? great veiws of dorset by night
Thank you :)
Really amazing and inspiring. Which PC program do you use?
So clever! It's fantastic! :D
im in Weymouth and im sure a few of your other fans :) are as-well....
Hello.. amazing video.. can I ask what music this is please as wpuld love to download
Thanks. I use a free program called startrails to stack my time lapse footage to get the trails. I use NX2, Lightroom and movie maker but unfortunately these can't do this "lighten layer mode". I can't justify the cost of photoshop. If you have heard of any other programs that might do it that would be great. When ever I search for something similar it always comes up with photoshop or just simple contrast adjustment programs. It's just such a cool feature I'd love to add it to my films. Cheers
At 1.18 what is the little light in the left hand corner that comes in stops dead then shoots back again?? UFO ?
Lovely video :)
Ah, that's ideal then. Whereabouts would you like to shoot? Could do with a local's knowledge and experience...
Cheers :)
Exquisite. :D
Watch CAREFULLY, use COMMON SENSE and then tell me we live on a spinning ball !
( We do NOT ! )
Thank you!
