This car needs to be restored. My brother had one like this in the late 60's. I was maybe 14 at the time but I loved that car. It was white from the factory but he repainted it a metallic green / gold color. He added cragar mags and had high jackers to lift the rear end. It was the cockiest car around town. I lost my brother a few years ago but watching this video brings back some great memories.

Great video Dylan. Loved it. I've hated the look of these frumpy little Darts. But with a V8 4bbl, 4 speed, limited slip and dual exhaust burning the tires, I kinda like them now. I owned a 65 Dart Charger back in 1971. It was stock when I purchased it. 273 Hipo 235 HP with the 904 Trans. I rebuilt the engine and Trans and installed a 8-3/4" rear-end. I drag raced it in KOA AHRA and set the National Record. It originally came from CA. Solid car and no rust. Paid $500 for it. Sold it in 1975 and the guy wrapped it around a pole. Totaled the car. Today, it would have been restored.

I think Old Red needs to be saved: fix the rust issues in the body and floor, install front discs and a dual master cylinder, better seats and some interior improvements. and if you can get that kind of scratch from a 318 of unknown quality, just imagine what a mildly built 340 would do? Back in my youth, the older brother of a friend of mine had a '65 Dart GT with a 273 (I think) and a four speed. And the brother wanted to trade his car straight across for my '69 Plymouth Valiant 2-door post (Slant-6 and automatic). We never got the deal done, and seeing how much fun Dylan had driving his GT, I wish I had made the trade.

That fuel pump needed replacing any way. I laugh about the fuel line, I remember back in the seventies I rebuilt my motorcycle engine, I checked everything over, but it would not start, my brother helped to try to roll start it. We pushed and pushed and nothing, we checked the gas -AGAIN- and pushed and kicked some more. I was getting hot and sweaty and so pissed off. Finally, my brother said we should check the plug, he bent down and laughed. We - me- had never put the spark plug wire on the plugs. It cranked right up and ran like a champ after hours of messing with it.

Anything is worth fixing if you want/love it enough, my '66 Dart GT we build into my "Yard Dart" had about the same level of rust but had the added hill-billy package where they torched out the trans tunnel and it wasn't even a stick shift car, just a 273 4 barrel auto car. I honestly don't blame you for not wanting to get involved in restoring that car, I just picked up a 64 Polara 500 383 4 speed console car and the more carpet I peel out, the more of the floor comes with it, but I will fix it, even if I have to get creative with patch panels. That is a very cool '65 if you want to sell it, I know someone who'd be interested.

Wow Dylan, that car is so cool ! It's in not much worse shape than my Coronet 4 speed (and i've been enjoying it for 7 yrs now). You should bring yours to this month's Tenn.Valley Mopar show. It's local to both of us. (FYI..Your Dart is nicely optioned & looks to have the HD front brake drums (WIDE front shoes), also, having a trunion 4 speed in a '65 makes sense because they were used thru the 1964 model run so, i'm betting if you check the case stamping it'll verify as '64 production & is typical of Mopar to have "new" (year old) engines, trannys etc from inventory for next year (1965) production. *Still wanna know why they quit driving it 12 yrs ago.

    21st Century rat rod
It takes me back to 1976 and the 1st car I bought on a bank loan. It left NC as a 73 Duster Twister with a 2 bbl & 3 on the floor w/w bucket seats, no console. Sold off the Travis AFB "lemon lot" by a guy headed overseas. I finished it w/w a '68 340 4 bbl, (AVS), a 833A sm blk 4 spd & a 3.91 sure grip drop in. The biggest gripe was the 5 x 4" BC front disc brake available options. Back in the day i had minimal money and was always looking for low buck upgrades; ie brakes, suspension, that I could source and install myself. The one thing i should have done was made the change from 5x4 BC bolt pattern to 5x4-1/2. So whats your base initial timing?? Whats the current ignition system, points or electronic?? You changed the water pump?? Sent the radiator out to be cleaned "rodded" out?? Drive shaft - eminent failure or questionable power transfer?? 3rd member pinon seal replacement?? Sure grip inspection & service?? Or look for a donor "A" body and transfer the drive train, with possible mods? or ???. A six cyl auto "A" body Dart, Demon, Duster, or an "E" body?? I also owned a 1971 Plymouth Fury w/w a 318 - 2 bbl carb, long tail shaft 904 auto trans, 4 whl drum brakes, w/ pwr str & pwr brakes. 2 dr bench seat - hrdtp, banana yellow with a front hood so long you could land a Cessna on that plane. I miss that car.

Maybe I missed something, but isn't the fuel filter on backward? Usually you can see the dirt collect on the outside of the filter element. Anyway, this Dart is just like any other used car: Someone has worked on it until they lost interest and then someone else picks it up and adds to it. Eventually it gets into the right hands and Voil'a it's runnin again. Race on Sunday Sell on Monday. Been There Done It. ben/ michigan
