Great video! It has taken me a long time to figure out how to use planners as well. I only use physical paper planners, as the digitals ones just don't really exist once you put data in them, as you say. Then, I need a weekly format, that has a horizontal daily format, a monthly format is good, too. I like to color code but for my family - one color for me, one for my spouse, and one for our daughter's events. Easy to keep track of what everyone's doing. Finally, I "puffy cloud circle" phone call appointments, "circle" appointments, and "box" scheduled times at work.
I like to journal but prefer digital calendars. I manage to keep my digital calendar in sight by having a calendar widget that takes up a whole page on my second page of my home screen. Thanks for sharing your experience!
I do this same thing. Digital means I can access anywhere on a phone or computer. I color code things - Work is blueberry, fun activities are sage green, grape is appointments, blue is birthday, tomato red is critical reminders, etc. I find the fun color names and shades helps. And I agree with find what works for you and is sustainable. I spend 5 minutes a day on my calender and that works for me, plus I can set auditory reminders. My non negotiables are 1. Doesn't take more than 10 minutes a day, 2. Syncs with multiple devices, and 3. Allows me to set reminders and alerts.
Appointments go in my digital calendar at time of booking; to-do lists go in a tiny spiral bound notebook (so that I can fit a pen in the binding!) 0-2 days in advance and include appointments to remind me to be mindful of my spoons for that day. Whatever is left undone is a note for the next day, just, “Yesterday”. Some days I just write down everything that comes to mind that I need to get done, like a brain dump, then I’ll distribute that more reasonably as I go over the next few days. I’ve found that notebooks of 12cmx12cm are the perfect size. I got the last 2 from a store that coincidentally have a Pusheen design (no arguments, most excellent), but it’s been a struggle to find any others anywhere - and getting a custom order from a print shop would not be cheap 😱 if anyone happens to know where I might find some that size please do let me know 🥲

I tried bullet journaling and realized that I don't have patience of creating the weekly layout for every week. So I went back to printed planners. Personally for me the right fit was disc bound planner. I can switch things around every month if I so like. I can add things there in the middle of the year If I need that and I can modify it with different extensions that there are. I can also switch layouts easily. I have downsized the decorating a lot, though I still like to do some of that. But while it was what got me interested with planners again, it's not main component for me anymore. My week is not ruined if I have not decorated my weekly spread. I really love the disc bound system also because I can take the pages out from the planner when I'm writing on them and then put them back in. When I was introduced disc bound planners first I thought that those would be really weak. For my surprise I like them much better than the spiral bound ones. That said, I also carry my planner in fabric pouch to protect the covers that seem to be the weakest point in that planner (the corners starts to wear pretty quickly). But I combine that with my calendar in my phone. That is where all my appointments go too in color coded also. That way every time I check my phone I'm reminded from what is going to happen today or tomorrow. I have found out that it will help me keep up with my appointments. I still try to figure out how I'm going to add my school stuff in there without too much work.
For me, paper planners are out of sight, out of mind (yet they were the right fit for me in the past). Since my phone is almost always within reach, I use my google calendar with reminders I can hear, and an 11x17 monthly wall calendar with big squares and lines in each square. The search function on the google calendar works for me, and I can quickly switch between visual formats if my brain needs to look at it from different angle: monthly, weekly, schedule, and hourly formats. I can also immediately "invite" family members via their e-mail address so they know when I'm going to be (un)available, instead of forgetting to tell them once I get home.

Adding 4 minutes of spiral binding adjustment before marking something held in memory (whether to add or look up) is very much a big deal. I feel you with the spiral bindings. I used sketchbooks with spiral bindings for a while, and while looking the back cardboard was annoying, the about of moving around the pages did in my backpack very much smudged all the the drawings.
that's the worst! especially with a sketchbook. you did all that work to get your art out on paper, just for it to get smudged because the spiral binding wasn't on properly!

Hey Madison ! I've been looking for an ADHD friendly planning process and your video has been really helpful because of how simple it is. I also love color coding but I didn't think of doing it by by deadline and importance of deadline. I'm a consultant working with different clients, while also building my own fashion business on the side, so I have the same issue as you with importance vs. class in that if I color code by project, I down-prioritise my own project. The idea of prioritising by importance would train me to see my own commitments as equally important as my external commitments. Thanks for the tips
Like you, I use a paper planner. The pretty, fancy ones can be far too distracting and busy for me, so I do the minimalist planner -- usually one that's a nice soft color -- and add stickers or highlighting as needed. I also only use pencil to write in my appointments, so that I can erase if the schedule changes, and also because I sometimes write an appointment in the wrong place and have to change it. A few years ago, I decided to try using an *appointment book,* instead of a planner. In the weekly view, there's a column for each day (including Saturdays and Sundays, we do stuff on weekends, too, right?) divided vertically in 15-minute increments from 7am to 9pm. I love this, because it helps me keep the planner specific, and also keeps it neater. For specific appoinments, I also circle the time or draw a box around the time slot (in pencil) to emphasize it. Colored pencil would work, too, but this is easier for me. The line spacing in an appointment book is admittedly small, so may not work for everyone. But this has been great for me. Sharing in case it might help others.
This video is so good! Makes me wanna try getting a monthly view planner lol. But I wanna share something that might be helpful when it comes to digital planning. No need to feel obligated to follow this lol, but I hope someone can find this helpful: I used to have a digital planner and calendar and I did NOT follow any of them. That out of sight rule, like you said, is the biggest reason why. Along with that, the feeling of being rigid with my tasks made me not follow any of it at all. I had full notion pages, 2 different apps for a calendar, 2 apps for to do lists, and a complex physical planner that had habits, monthly view, weekly view, quarterly summary, etc. So I decided to just stick to a calendar for a rough layout of the day, a to do list for random ideas I may find (NOT as a list I do for the week), and a physical planner that is fully blank. I didn't usually put a lot on my physical planner, but once I cleaned my desk and only put the planner, a water bottle, and a dopamenu in my desk, I put a lot more smaller tasks (rather than the whole goal) in the planner and I did a LOT more. In the to do list, I basically just use it as a quick note thing. I use TickTick, but Apple Reminders works wonderfully too. I just say "Hey siri, remind me about mario kart soundtrack [or random fact or idea or non-urgent task i come through]" then it will just show up in the reminders app. In the calendar, I cleared everything and only have the morning routine, lunch, me time (at night), and evening routine to give me a sense of divide between the day. I put the non-negotiables like classes and exams then keep it as is. When I'm taking a dump or about to start my day, I look at the calendar widget I have on my phone and fill it up with manageable tasks. I don't make it rigid, but rather see it more like a nudge on things I can do at the time. If it feels like it's a little much for now, I move it later down the days. No, I don't stick to this 100%, but probably around 50%, which is way better from the ~5% I had before, which btw had a harder initial set up and took much more time trying to maintain it. anyway, Yeah! Loved the video and the tips!
@@randomperson4208 honestly, i get it. i only stick with ticktick because of the quick access menu on the macbook, but reminders and todoist are good alternatives! believe me when it took me over a year to figure out my system
A year later but… very informative thought-provoking video. Really made me re-think uncomfortable thoughts regarding my planner, especially the size. I’m always trying to carry the most streamlined planner but it stresses me out! What I really need is a letter size planner, not half letter, personal and certainly not pocket size, which I try to carry the most (pocket). White space bothers some but for me, I need it. If it’s too cramped it looks scattered and messy and I don’t want the strain of figuring wait, what’s next? Thoroughly enjoyed your view points. TFS
I can't do digital planners either. Out of sight out of mind is spot on. I like using stickers, stamps, stencils, pictures to jazz it up since I can't be bothered actually drawing or whatever. I have learned to work around my existing routines, I can adjust if I need to but it's better and easier to work around my daily routines if I can. I have a monthly and a weekly and I have a jot down pad if I have a big day ahead or something where I need to plan it out ahead of time. I'd rather write it out the day before hand or something then panic on the day.
Hi! I use a phone calendar plus a paper planner. I started using a happy planner dashboard layout this year for the first time. It’s the only thing that’s ever worked. But I’m adding a separate vertical planner for my artwork for next year so I can create specific goals for that. I’m not a colour coder and I tried stickers but they drove me mad, so I stopped using them. 👍🏻
Digital planners help me with some stuff, especially future planning but otherwise, I hate them, jut as you do. Only use them because I always have my phone with me, aka = no forgetting multiple job shifts it at different work places. colour
I don't have ADHD (as far as I know) but can relate to your thinking. Digital planners don't work for me - the physical action of writing works for me. Colour coding is a complete no-no however - my brain just finds it distracting! I do however choose a colour pallette for the month and stick to it - a coloured pen (Sarasa vintage) with a matching/toning highlighter. That's as close to decoration as I get. No stickers, no washi. I have enjoyed softcover planners in the past but currently have a collection of ring-planners, so changing the covers out every few months is a way to freshen things up too. Don't get along with spiral-bound, and how anyone puts up with the clatter of disc-planners is beyond me!
I just found this video & I actually fit in all of your numbered must haves! I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult & it’s a daily struggle even on medication. I can follow all of your suggestions & I’ve always been a color coder but my ADHD takes my brain a step further-how to pick what color for what or for who! I don’t work but I do have doctors appts -I’m a cancer survivor & suffer from 3 autoimmune diseases. I do have grandchildren that I’ve tried color coding for things like their games or extra curricular activities. Do you have any suggestions on how to do to pick the colors for the coding-I have the pens it’s just what colors for who or what activity!
for *some reason* i was able to keep up with the zebra mildliners. i have no idea what's special about them for my brain to decide to keep up with them!
@@madisonharris4528atleast they are not out of sight xD also... If you have a significant other, make one extra Google account and add it to both phones. Any notes, reminders, events made with that account will be synced. If my gf tells me we have something next weekend, and I'm not immediately adding it to my calendar.. well... This way she can make sure I won't forget
You mentioned two ends of the spectrum colour code or black and white? What do you mean by this? I ask because I love greyscale photos, and when planning, colours kind of put me off. So I'm wondering if there is another method of coding that I am missing? Thank you
Great video! How I make my planner work with my add. First I get a big switch from a tree. I put my paper planner in my bedroom. I close the curtains and lock the doors. I turn on my stereo so no neighbors will hear. (Insert abusive story about beating up on my paper planner while drunk). Then the police get involved, again, and my paper planner is temporarily spending time with my brother and his kids while I spend time in rehab.
I have ADHD. I’m pretty incapable of planning anything tbh. Physical, digital, doesn’t matter. If I put it down or close the app, it doesn’t exist anymore. I’ll have one important thing to do that day, write it on the back of my hand and hope I see it and do the task before I wash my hands. I hate ADHD. I can’t DO anything.
I don’t understand the “softbound vs spiral” thing… ? The opposite of softbound is “hardbound.” Wouldn’t hardbound also prevent all those issues you mentioned that spiral bounds present?
Please Show more of the physical planner instead of your head so close to the camera... Most ADHD are visual...if I can't see it, then it doesn't exist..."Out of Sight, Out of Mind".... Therefore I'd love to actually see what your working with...thanks

Love this video, also a passion planner user. I buy the daily undated and use it when my brain is too overwhelmed. Also love your glasses
this was such a helpful video!!! i struggle so badly with managing my adhd and i just bought this planner ,,, cant wait to try it !!!!
I’m so happy this made it to you!!!!
Be gentle with yourself if it doesn’t work. Not all of us are planner people ❤️
Hey Madison !
Your glasses look great!
This video is so good! Makes me wanna try getting a monthly view planner lol. But I wanna share something that might be helpful when it comes to digital planning. No need to feel obligated to follow this lol, but I hope someone can find this helpful:
I used to have a digital planner and calendar and I did NOT follow any of them.
I love ticktick but after two months, it feels very cluttered. Maybe I'm not made for digital planner 😔
TFS
Omg, Madison. Thank you so much for doing this video. I relate so much to you, and this was really helpful.
I'd rather write it out the day before hand or something then panic on the day.
yep! i'm the same way with the pre planning. less to worry about, and hopefully i don't forget something important (but probably will)
This is a really good and helpful video. Thanks for making this video!
Yeah it is not about the bullet journal 😅 (it did not work for me) I really appreciated you shared your tips. Thank you from Fribourg 🇨🇭
I wish it worked for me! It always looks so much fun 😂 I hope something from this works for you!!
Lol i am also from fribourg 😀 never saw a comment on youtube from the same city as me. Adhd power
Omg 😳 I so feel you on all this. Thank you!
❤
This was incredibly helpful. Thank you!
Great video, very helpful I write things down then can never find what notebook.
Thank you for inspiring me 😊 keep up the good work 👍
Just discovered you and I'm watching the first of your videos and 8 seconds in you mention cats are in "sport mode" Subscribed ✅
I'll be thinking about cats wearing crocs in sport mode the entire video...
Great video! We have the same non-negotiables!
I love it! Once you figure out how to make things works, it really works. And I’m glad this reached you and you enjoyed!
On a very very side note... your hair is perfect.
Omg thank you 😭
Digital planners help me with some stuff, especially future planning but otherwise, I hate them, jut as you do. Only use them because I always have my phone with me, aka = no forgetting multiple job shifts it at different work places.
colour
Thank for the video, is awesome
Amazing thank you!
I hope this works for you!
I make lists and lists and lists...the challenge for me is actually doing the things on the lists !!
Puuurrrrfect thanks
Thanks for sharing!
I think you might really like laurel denise planners. It's amazing for my visual learning, ADHD brain. Game changer! 👍👍👍👍
Do you have any suggestions on how to do to pick the colors for the coding-I have the pens it’s just what colors for who or what activity!
you are the sweeter youtuber i ever seen :) don't ask me why
I like color coding but I lose the colors every time.
for *some reason* i was able to keep up with the zebra mildliners. i have no idea what's special about them for my brain to decide to keep up with them!
Using the full month view Google calendar widget on my phones homescreen. My god it's hard not to look at it 200 times a day
I've thought about doing something like that, but I don't want to spend way too much time looking at my phone 😂
Saying your cats are in “sports mode” is killing me
You mentioned two ends of the spectrum colour code or black and white? What do you mean by this? I ask because I love greyscale photos, and when planning, colours kind of put me off. So I'm wondering if there is another method of coding that I am missing? Thank you
Great video! Thanx to you and your creative ADHD brain! :)
thank you! gotta get this lizard brain to make itself useful somehow 😂
Where are your frames from?
Cute glasses 🤓
Great video!
How I make my planner work with my add. First I get a big switch from a tree. I put my paper planner in my bedroom. I close the curtains and lock the doors. I turn on my stereo so no neighbors will hear. (Insert abusive story about beating up on my paper planner while drunk).
Then the police get involved, again, and my paper planner is temporarily spending time with my brother and his kids while I spend time in rehab.
bless u 😂
I have ADHD. I’m pretty incapable of planning anything tbh.
Physical, digital, doesn’t matter. If I put it down or close the app, it doesn’t exist anymore.
I’ll have one important thing to do that day, write it on the back of my hand and hope I see it and do the task before I wash my hands.
I hate ADHD. I can’t DO anything.
goodnotes is horrible too
Is there a colour coding or b/w ADHD... Or just colour coding or b/w person... Feeling like that's not ADHD exclusive lol
