- Scholars have concluded Moses didn't write the Five Books of Moses. Who did?
The “Documentary Hypothesis” is the most widely accepted explanation of the Bible's authorship among modern scholars. Although Moses was traditionally considered the author of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible (Torah, or Pentateuch,) in this lecture we look at historical, archaeological, mythological, and literary evidence that suggests many different sources were compiled primarily during the Babylonian exile, many centuries after Moses would have lived, if he was a historical figure at all.

It is refreshing to hear a self-identifying Christian delivering a cogent lecture on the origins of scripture instead of engaging in dubious logical apologetics in an attempt to justify their belief in Biblical inerrancy.
Tell me about it, as sumbunny who was raised in the southern United States I almost experienced shock induced head-explodey after discovering this channel.
Even the "nicest" Christians out there practiced shunning techniques on me. No need to mention what the regulars did, most of us already know that experience.
If more Christians behaved like this there sure would be a lot less angry, resentful atheists in the world.
Well why not? Books are books. I think someone can consider themselves as religious not because he is dogmatic, but because some elements of religion are appealing for him

Believing in the literalism of the Christian religion tends to lead towards toxic behavior.
Scholarly folk who happen to like the Abrahamic faiths and enjoy/recognize the allegories in them are not common.

This isn't true at all, in my observation. I think people like this are pretty common, but the shrieking fundamentalists just make a lot more noise, by their nature.
Yes, those of us who grew up in the "land of Biblical Inerrancy" (The American South) grew up with a lot of nonsense that the scholarly interpretation doesn't need. Trying to say the Bible is inerrant, but then watching someone dance around the many, many inconsistencies and contradictions was always fairly ridiculous.
I've always been so amazed at that "say you're my sister" story being repeated three times, twice with the same king involved. I wonder if Abimelech was like, "Hey, did your father come through here about twenty years ago? I knew it! He pulled the same trick! What's wrong with your family??"

As a former Jehovah"s Witness this was a hugely enlightening lecture! Ive read yhe bible 3x in english, once in Spanish and ive read the Greek Interlinear Translation.
This shows how much goes over your head when you're reading and not actually analyzing. Horeb vs Saini; Raul vs Jethro; the differences in the 10 commandments; Learning El, Elohim and YahWeh don't all represent the name of God, nor were the regering to the same God in the beginning or that Elohim is Gods plural!
There was so much we thought we knew that we didn't remotely understand which i now realize is common trait of that religion.

I'm agnostic, but really interested in scholarly research into religion and mythology, so I enjoyed the heck out of this.

Are you a believer or a nonbeliever? There is no middle ground. An agnostic can be either. Intelligent believers and atheists are agnostics (in my opinion) the rest are fundamentalists and they include the fanatics.
@@fibber2u I think with most things there's a spectrum for agnosticism, and I don't think it unlikely for there to be folk around the middle. As for myself, I'm not entirely sure how to answer where I lie on the scale, as it's fairly complicated and would take a lot more delving than your average YT comment.
Lets just say that I maintain a healthy attitude of: "I just don't know!"
I enjoy theorizing, and I certainly want to believe in something beyond just a physical reality with nothing else to it, so there's that.

Outstanding work. I've watched a few of your uploads and I'm quite impressed. You explain for a lay person.
One question. What are your thoughts on Rudolph Steiner? Do you know who he is?
I know who he was: the creator of anthroposophy, which is a mixture of philosophy and guide to life/principles. I used to teach on a Rudolf Steiner school. We were also supposed to read his written work as part of our employment. Very dense stuff linguistically. Like JJ Rousseau: asking the right questions does not mean you are also able to provide the right answer. Steiner (or Walsdorf in English speaking countries) schools can be very good for some kids, and I met some wonderful people. On the other hand, a bit of sectarian whiff, and they are currently vaccination sceptics, which is not a good plan.

Interesting! Thanks for sharing these ideas. I've been studying the messy history of the mormons, especially since the time of Brigham Young and all the changes he made to Joseph smith's journals and revelations. It's so messy! It's interesting to see how messy Biblical history is, too.

From what I understood is that the 2 of 7 that were ultimately recognized was what was preserved. That means that 5 of the 7 were allowed to be eaten by those who were to withstand the plight of being within the ark. Could be multiple authors but may not be conflictive information if one author is suggesting survival.
Various teachings are important and most have valid viewpoints to consider.
I mean, as a child, I sincerely thought to be made in His image was to be made to be SEEN. Like, we are in the physical realm that allows all that we do to be seen by every entity outside of this realm. This topic has always fascinated me but I’m afraid it will never be anything more than just a hypothesis unless we are able to find some other ancient biblical texts that predate the Qumran scrolls. I recently read an article on NYTimes regarding an old story about an archaeologist who discovered an ancient version of Deuteronomy (possibly dating to the 1st temple period). It was declared a forgery and the discoverer later committed suicide. However, now there are scholars saying it may not have been a forgery but it is long lost. This was about 100 years ago.
Try researching the Gospel of Judas. It's authenticated by The Pope and the Vatican. It shows Jesus deeply mired in metaphysics and his favorite disciple was his youngest: Judas. Additional details in the new e-book: 'Candy Coated Jesus.'
No way texts that old will have survived. So it will remain a theory, as will any other scholarly views of the Bible. We'll never be able to prove it
@@oliverford5367 Yes it is possible as was the case for the ancient papyrus text from Egypt known as “the story of wenamun” dated to 1000 BCE, predating the Qumran scrolls by about 900 years. And many of the biblical texts are said to have been written between the time of these two texts so it is possible that something may be discovered through future excavations.

This is interesting, I hadn’t realized that God must’ve given the dietary laws to Noah before Moses and yet Noah was not commanded to observe them. He was allowed to eat anything that moved after the flood of as over.
Read the bible properly - Genesis 9:4
Noah and his family were only given the restriction to abstain from eating 'flesh with it's blood' - repeated for Christians at Acts 15:20
Noah was not given the same dietary laws that were later introduced under the Mosaic Law covenant that only applied to the nation of Israel - natural Jews that were liberated from their captivity in Egypt.

That’s just going by what the scriptures state. There could’ve been more dialogue between God & Noah that wasn’t recorded in that conversation.

The evidence for this is twofold;
1. The early Greek language, contemporary citations and datable manuscripts.
2. The earliest dating of oldest biblical texts is mid 2nd century. Long after the time of the septuagint.
Keep in mind, I didn't say the septuagint is the original source for the stories in the bible. Just that they, the translators were the redactors, and I believe first compilers, of what is the present day Torah.

Idolatry, or the worship of objects or even depictions and symbols, casts a very wide net. Ideally, I think Jesus intended matters of the spirit to remain in the mind and within the spiritual realm. However, I do myself wear a cross as a personal comfort - I don't worship the object. Catholic veneration of "icons" could be deemed Idolatry if you take the strictest definition.

Why was there no commandment not to enslave a fellow human being? Thou shalt not enslave a human being created by the almighty; something like that. It's like the bible only favors a certain group of people. That sounds like a tribal book for me - story about a small set of the world population.
The Old testament is written from a Jewish perspective as they considered themselves God's chosen people, as is the New Testament. This makes me, personally, wonder why so many Western (non Jewish) people hold so much store in it.
I think in their mind they couldn't run a proper kingdom without slaves, otherwise they would have to do the work the slaves did. Everyone did slavery back then. As far as I'm concerned they lived in a kind of hell compared with the reality of us in the developed world. The romans and the Greeks couldn't imagine a world without slavery either. Actually slavery is kind of a feature of civilisation. Early prositution was slavers renting out female slaves to be graped all day every day. Many, many wives were slaves by our modern concept; they didn't agree to marry, most were too young to bear children safely, they couldn't refuse consent or leave by free will. Weve only started to understand how disgusting it is recently, like last 2 hundred years maximum. In my mothers lifetime a woman could divorce her husband without going to court and in my lifetime a woman gained the right to give or refuse sexual consent - were Australian. These are very modern concepts, and Judaism and Christianity doesn't reinforce these things, us humans just got more ethical as our life got better and more educated so we could develop more empathy.

Probably about the same stuff animals in captivity in those days got to eat. 40 days isn't enough time to reproduce for most larger mammals, but it is enough for mice. Though 40 is a special number in such ancient texts, there is no reason to assume a literal interpretation, on the contrary there are various indications not to.

Even if that part of Genesis 7 is interpreted that way, Genesis 6 clearly states one pair of all animals and birds. Genesis 7 states 7 pairs of clean animals and birds, and 1 pair of unclean animals. Feels like two accounts placed side by side.

I think you have failed to grasp the point of the video. God was not the author of the Bible. You also need to do some research on the pre-Judaic, tribal pantheism from which monotheism evolved. When you have two accounts of the same thing that means one version is contributed to the writer that he did not write or copied version in error throwed together.
