    Great video as usual Terry, I have a thermotec heat source pump on my 3000gal pond and last winter it cost me approx £250 from November through to March to maintain 14.5c , they are a bit if an outlay but the returns in seeing fish active and feeding is wellworth it take care and look forward to seeing it when its fitted.

      Hi Andy, thanks mate, Mine should be here in the next few days. Can't wait to get it in and working. They seem to sell them quicker than they can get them. I have now registered as a seller with HeatPumps4Pools, so if you know anybody wanting one, I might be able to help mate. I've not heard a bad word about them yet. Must admit, they are really helpful. The heaters do look a cracking bit of kit. I've got the 9kw coming, which I think will be plenty big enough for my 2500 gallon. Thanks mate and take care, Terry.

    This is a really nice setup! I just went through a big heater problem and lost a lot of fish last week during a temperature plummet during a hurricane, when I lost my heaters. I'm in Maine, USA, I ended up bringing the fish inside today. It's too cold here in the winter anyway, but I don't generally lose the heaters before I'm quite ready in the fall!

      Hi Sirena, and thank you, very much appreciated. Sorry to hear you lost your fish and heating. Thank goodness we don't get the hurricanes here in the UK, but I have to say, our weather here is changing, and not for the good. We've had a rubbish summer here this season, and now we are getting toward winter 🙄🙄thanks again, and take care, Terry.

    Good idea to get the Air Source Heat Pump! We took the plunge this year and fitted a Duratech Dura10+. Best thing we’ve done. Our pond is 7200 gal and currently being kept at 15.5 deg C. Costing about £1.45 per day at the moment which doesn’t seem too bad as the temps have been dropping pretty low overnight lately. Will be looking out for the next video! 👍🏻

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  3 года назад +1

      Hi Terry, and thank you. I really don't put much salt in my pond at all. I normally run 8 good handfuls of salt. The koi will hardly know its there, and as winter prep comes I add another 8 handfuls. A hand full works out to around 100g so not much at all when you think some add 1lb per 100 gallon. You maybe know that salt is a very mild irritant to koi and this causes them to increase their slime coat. What you have to remember is salt wont disappear from the water with evaporation, It can only be removed by water changes. Hope this helps mate, thanks again and take care, Terry.

    I bought a Dream ASHP last year (around the £600 mark). I put an external thermostat on it as the in built one doesn't go low enough and I wanted to give the fish a 'winter' but without letting the temp drop too low. I never had covers on the pond so the heater worked quite hard at times. My one is a 5kW version so it has an input of 1kW. This year I've managed to make some covers (finished them this sunday just gone) and I've been logging the daily electric usage. Over the last few weeks I've averaged between £3.50 -£4.50 a day for the whole house usage and the pond is set at 15.5c with a 0.5 drop before the heater kicks in. We are heavy electric users any way but this is way way better than your £12 a day just for the heater. I cant tell what the pond heater is using on it's own as it isn't wired in a way I can measure just that. The wife went out for the day the other week and the cost dropped to £2.88 for the day (that was before I had the covers on). My heater sits about 18" above the water level (My pond is fully sunk in the ground) and the one problem I have is air locks in the heater whenever I do any work on it or the filter that protects it. Mine is run on an independent circuit with it's own pump in the pond and its own filter. It doesn't have a by pass at all. If I were you I would put a one way valve between the bypass and the heater. That would stop the problem with air locks. I have one on mine but I put it before the filter so I still get the problem if I work on the filter. I really must get around to swapping it round or adding another one on the correct side. The heaters also have a flow switch on them so you have to make sure there is enough water passing through it to keep it triggered. I would also leave the other heater fitted just in case you have problems with the ASHP at any time.

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  3 года назад +1

      Hi Jim, thanks for the info mate. very much appreciated. You'll find the covers make a big difference to your pond temp. I did look at the Dream heaters, but I wanted the inverter type heat pump, which meant I had to save up for a bit longer. Mine will be set the same as yours and sit above the pond water level, so I will look out for airlocks, thanks for letting me know mate. I do have a non-return valve just before where the heater will be fitted that stops any backflow. I'm hoping my sieve filter will take out most of the dirt before it gets to the heater. I will leave the Cloverleaf heater in the line as a backup like you say. Thanks for the info mate, it's been very helpful, take care, Terry.

      @joshuapearson2857 3 года назад

      @@MrAlgar2000 Just a tip or two, your first step in determining if solar would work for you is your budget. Solar has the ability to be expensive to purchase. You would need to know how many watts of power your heat pump would run at full load, including the startup surge, so that you can size your system adequately. After that, you would need a battery bank so that you could run through the night or if the day is overcast, and an inverter to take the low voltage from the system, and make it into mains for the machinery to use. Alternately, you could pipe in a solar roof bypass for when the sun is up to heat water directly. I hope this helps, at least a little. Best of luck on your project! Stay safe out there!

    hi i have the same heater cloverleaf 1kw on a 1000 gallon pond covered and insulated pipe work. and the same plug in meter thing off ebay about 13 -14 quid. just for the same reason that you have to keep track of the costs. i am turning the pond over about once an hour and find that the heater kicks in for a few seconds at at a time . from 30 - 60 seconds each time . this is more cost effective once you have reached the temp reqiered . i have been keeping a log of the costs daily plus high and low outside temps . like last week we had a first frost of the year were we had a -1 at 4.30 am and the cost was 1.12 pounds for 24 hours from 7pm to 7pm . the pond temp held at 14
    but most days at the moment with the temp held at 14 the costs have been between 0 to 60p a day. and total cost for the last 28 days have been 24.32.
    i am planning on dropping the temp slowly over december to 10 deg over january and febuary and taking it back up in march to 14 un till ambient temp takes over . and keep feeding very small amounts of wheatgerm once a day while a 10 deg.
    i did this last year and the koi were happy and eating every day with no health issues at all.
    and a total cost of about 160 pound give or take a few pence . would cost more the replace one of my much loved koi.
    please note you will not gain much growth at all at these temps. its just to make them go through the winter and not struggle. and so i can see them every day and check on them and give them a hand full of food..
    this bit of info might help some one with the costs of heating to a minimum .
    but you must be insulated
    regards terry

      Hi Terry, Thanks for the info, but that's just what I though mate. My pond of 2500 UK gallon is too much for it. I still think the stat will do the heater harm keep cutting in and out like it does, plus it will use more electric when it's cutting in because of the power surge when it first connects. A friend on here has fitted an external stat to his, and he says it works loads better. Thanks mate and take care, Terry.

    Just a thought but is your water flow through the heater enough? I believe those heaters have a flow detector built in so if the flow isn’t enough it will cur out as a safety measure. Might be that your flow is just on the minimum limit so any variation would cause it to cut out. Only a thought but may be worth checking?

      Hi mate. I have a 20,000 lph pump running at 85% which should be ok, but I thought the same as you. So I turned the stat up full and it didn't cut out. If I try to run it close to the temperature I want, it starts cutting in and out every few seconds. I might get another stat and see how that works. Thanks for your suggestion mate, Terry.

    Ideally, how much a day do you realistically believe the air source pump will cost to run on your pond on average through the cold months?

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  3 года назад +1

      Hi Alex, to be honest mate, I don't know for sure. I'm getting figures from people with ashp of £1.50 to £2.50 a day on average. It can't be any worse than the Cloverleaf lol. thanks mate, Terry.

    • @Veterankoi
      @Veterankoi 3 года назад

      @@Wrighty If that’s the case, working on a worst case scenario of £3 a day, that’s around £90 a month in a really cold year. 2 months £180. But then realistically no more than 4 weeks extreme cold, then 4 weeks average of around 7/8 degrees probably £45. My guess would be on average about £65 a month. What do you think? From what I have read, it’s more important to keep the water temperature stable than above 10dg C. My feeling is that if you can allow the water temperature to drop to 9dg C but then keep it there, your fish will still appreciate it. Mine dropped to around 7dg last year ( no heater)’ but the fish came out of winter just fine. The only issue is their immune system which takes a while to kick back in.

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  3 года назад +1

      Hi Alex, The temp of between 8 and 12c is not good for the koi. Once the temp starts to drop below 12c the koi start to loose their immunity and the parasites and bacteria still thrive. Below 6c the bacteria and parasites die off. To heat 2500 gallon of water for around £60.00 a month is not to bad to avoid the sort of problems you could get with the koi. I have 30 koi in there which would take a lot of replacing. One bad bacterial infection could cause all sorts of problems for the rest of the year. I say each year, I'm not heating the pond, then when I see them in the 6 or 7c water I think, poor little devils lol. This year I've decided to go for it. I will see what keeping the pond at 15c costs, and if it's too much, I will drop it to 12c. thanks, Terry.

    Hi wrighty looked at one of them heaters but my pond with covers on and insulated is holding at 11 degrees. Doesn't seem worth it to spend 7 quid a day to raise it 2 degrees. To be honest if it raised it to 19 degrees for 7 quid over 24 hrs I'd give it a miss. You need a second hand air source heat pump. Love your vids keep them coming

My pond at 2500 UK gallon is too big for the Cloverleaf heater. They really shouldn't say it will heat that amount of water. God knows what it would cost when the weather comes cold. Hi Stan. Koi can survive in very cold water, but it doesn't mean they like it. It does stress the koi. Below 12c a koi starts to lose it's immunity and bacteria and parasites are still thriving. Also our winters are too long, keeping koi in a stressed state. Terry.

    I love your channel but you don't need to heat the water for koi as they are cold water fish and will do much better if you let them have ice cold running water all winter. That will keep them healthy and fresh and free of parisites. I have been running my ponds all winter in Canada in -30 and -40 below Celsius and never ever had a sick or dead koi ever. Some of my fish are 30 years old. Get rid of heater and get your money back as you don't need a heater in the UK. Heating a pond will just allow more parisites to multiply. Trust me, been keeping koi in n Canada very healthy since 1991.

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  3 года назад +1

      Hi Colleen, Good to hear you enjoy the channel and thank you for your support. I've been keeping koi since I was 21 years old and am now 70. Everybody has their own idea on koi keeping and how they should be kept. Did you know that below 4c, koi can actually get hyperthermic, and below 2c can actually freeze on the inside. Parasites only become a problem when their immune system becomes week. This starts below 13c down to 8c, after 8c the parasites begin to die. if the water temperature is kept above 13c, the koi keep their immune system and parasites are not a problem. Koi really don't like cold water, so if I can keep them happy I will. This is just my view on keeping koi. I will give them a winter and switch the heater off for 1 month, but I will keep the pond temperature above 4c. Thank you for your comment. Terry.

    • @colleenpenny6304
      @colleenpenny6304 3 года назад

      @@Wrighty not true. My pond water is always barely above freezing and koi are all healthy and fine. That's a myth and I know it. Koi will not freeze . Water of 2 degrees as that's about my pond temperature most all winter. You can go back seven years on my channel and see the same koi in ice cold water every Winter. You don't know because you never seen koi in ice cold running water. Koi will only freeze if you allow the pond to freeze over but running water keeps pond from freezing shut and keeps hole open in ice. I know you guys in UK all think the same, meanwhile in North America many of my koi friends keep there koi outside all year round too.
