From Griffith's perspective he got betrayed and abandoned by his only friend (despite what he said to Charlotte, he loved Guts as a friend) when Guts decided to leave.
This led to Griffith acting recklessly, which led to his imprisonment and torture, which fueled his anger towards his once beloved friend.
Now suffering a year's worth of grueling and unimaginable torture, having lost all that he's ever worked for, being disfigured and forever crippled, he gets saved by the person that he has spent blaming this year in darkness and pain for. And he realizes that despite all of that, he still loves Guts. Which now turns his hatred towards himself for his deep affection towards his friend. He should hate him, yet he can't. Guts is his weakness, and he can't stand it.
He's rescued. Now the once mighty leader of the Band of the Hawk is just a weak cripple fallen from grace. He's looked at and talked about with pity. He sees the gazes towards him of his once loyal followers. He hears the chatter of everyone wanting to disband, split up, get a new leader. His dream is dead. And above all that, Guts either abandons him again, or he stays out of *pity*.
Not only that, he sees the feelings that Guts has with Casca, and despite us not being shown that Griffith had any feelings for Casca, we are shown in a later dream sequence that he fantasizes of having a family with her, so it's safe to assume that that may have been a deep desire of his that he had to cast aside for the sake of his dream. But now, this woman that has always worshipped him and looked at him with wonder also looks at him with *pity*, while her heart has been stolen by his beloved friend. She also wants to leave, but will stay out of *pity*.
By now he is consumed with despair. He tries to kill himself, but he's too weak to even manage that. And in his most darkest moment, just before the Eclipse, we hear his thoughts as Guts rushes towards him. All that anger, hate, anguish, sadness, all of his despair and loss caused by this man that he still loves is once again rushing towards him, all to once again turn towards himself as Guts takes hold of Griffith. The moment that he truly is at his lowest point emotionally that the Behelit activates.
And what happens? He is promised godhood, power, and the means to achieve his dream again. While on the other end of the scale is just a weak, crippled shell of his former self that can't walk, can't pick up a sword, and can't even talk. No dream, no glory, nothing but a slow decent to his death (which would probably come pretty soon, considering that they were surrounded by all the Apostles). And his price? All the soldiers that had already sworn their lives to pave the path to his dream, what's a dozen or so more in finally achieving it? But most of all the means to finally get rid of his love and weakness; Guts.
We all know that what Griffith did was vile, but given the circumstances, how many of you can for certainty say that the thought of making the sacrifice wouldn't cross your minds?

I can understand Griffith to a degree. Ambition and a need to rise above your station is a fine goal to set for oneself, but I cannot condone his jealousy and spite. It is low to behave in such a way. A "superior being" should be above such pettiness.
He's still... Well "was" still human, the idea of evil can also be summarized as "you sacrifice an inner part of yourself in order to gain if not even awake something very powerful within you (tho it's forced)". yeah dude I dont agree. Griffiths primary goal was to create a kingdom of his own and would sacrifice anything for it including all of his "loved" friends. It was his goal from the start. His relationship with Guts was always transactional. He saw Guts for what he was worth in achieving his goal not seeing him as a "loved friend". The harvest was in my opinion the result of Griffith abandoning his hope of achieving his goal. He had given up hope and attempted to kill himself. Thus activating the festival. Thats why he was chosen. The god hand knew the outcome of griffiths hopeless plan. He never cared for his band... including Guts, from the start. He wanted to achieve his goals and use them as he saw fit. His imprisonment was a consequence of his tantrum he threw when he lost one of his greatest tools, and his giving up hope was a reaction to losing his actual greatest tool. His image that he spent his whole life creating. The harvest triggered the rebuilding of a new image. One that the God hand designed and one that they have been planning and waiting for from the start.

I think guts is more of an Übermensch than Griffith, in the development, the will and in the perseverance, I see Griffith more of a slave of destiny and in a way, a "slave" of the god hand, Guts, on the other hand, he didn't give up to weakness, Griffith (tho it is kind of understandable) kinda gave up to his weakness cause of his what they did to him and to the verge he was pushed, guts embraced all that, growing stronger and less weak (with weak, I'm referring to what can be considered evil about Griffith).
