I just turned my filter off. It's whisper quiet. It went a soothing green color that is really tranquil. The fish also love it because they no longer want to come to the surface when I feed them. They all just want to stay down there somewhere as much as they can.
I this happened to mine and I just cleaned everything out really well using a bucket of water and a dropper to get all the crevices and then added a little olive oil to the inside of the propeller shaft. Quiet so far. Hope it stays that way!! Thanks for the vid you look like james franco !
I have a AC 70, a Fluval C3, and a Tetra 40 and they all make noise out of the box new. I actually grinded the impeller edge with a dremel tool, and it stopped the C3 from making noise. You can use Fluval impellers in ACs too, that made my AC run better. Most of the time the noise is caused by uneven impellers not manufactured right, and even with buying new impellers they have the same issue. Even tanks without sand.
Welcome to why Aquaclear are considered the BEST of the best for HoB style filters. Been using them religiously for over 25 years never needing to replace one...ever. When I see them at garage sales I snap them up for parts as you can see in this video very easy to repair one as they all prestty much use the same motors. Great Vid @Makify1
I completely covered all my motor components in vaseline..noise gone! Any excess Vaseline floats on top of water for easy removal. Fish and plants have not had any issues.
Hi. We just bought a fx350 turtle filter and we don't know why it's squeaking. It doesn't do it all the time. It's sounds like a mouse..kind of?? If possible could you please help us with any possible ways of stopping the squeaking noise? Lol. Thanks in advance.
I know this is an old video, but I'll just say you can now buy the impeller shaft. I have a noisy Fluval C4. Looks like a similar motor config - I saw a review of the AquaClear impeller shaft PN A16001 where a person said it fits the C4 motor. I bet it fits a lot of motors. I found it on Amazon ($14 CAD) and I just replaced my old shaft - worn just like yours. Well, I still have noise! So I've just ordered a new impeller. Maybe throwing good money after bad! Hope the 2 new parts fix the noise. Thanks for your video.
Just for anyone who finds this comment - a new impeller shaft and a new impeller fixed my filer and it is very quiet again. I read, and it may or not be true, that if the plastic blades pull up and can be separated from the magnet, it is broken. Mine old one was like that, the new one was not. Just for your troubleshooting. So I've just spent $37 CAD for the shaft and impeller (at Amazon prices, the LFS would be more), a little more than 1/3 of the new price of a Fuval C4. Something to keep in mind in case you had been thinking of upgrading to a cannister. But at least it's fixed!
They now sell the rods for like $6. I bought 3 since shipping was about $5 for 1 or more. That took care of my noise problem. I also have a fine sand substrate and it chewed up the original rod in a couple of months. Ended up raising the filter intake and putting a sponge at the tip. That greatly reduced the sand intake.
Nice video. I have to clean my two110's out today! I did pickup some prefilter sponges from Fluval, they fit perfectly over the intake of the aquaclear and don't seem to change the flow that much. I'm hoping this will keep the filter free of sand since I now have switched my substrate the Sahara sand.
I fixed mine by buying a Seachem Tidal. Noise problem solved! Seriously though, it seems a lot of these Aquaclear impeller assemblies are wonky straight out of the factory. They'll make a very irritating buzzing/rattling noise that all the cleaning and Vaseline in the world won't solve. They need much better quality control.
I reduced the noise on mine by inserting the impeller shaft pin back in upside down. It was worn even more than the one in the video. Seems to work as a temporary measure until I can replace it. Replacement pins are on ebay.
Thank you! Really useful video in terms of replacement. I've been looking for a video that showed me how to remove the motor and impeller but rarely found one!
I've had a whisper xl 70 for about eight years and this month the impeller shaft began to make nise. I love the filter, but goof luck trying to find a new impeller! I would have preferred a new one, but since I can't finds one, I'll be doing the old vaseline trick. Spread vaseline on the magnet, and the impeller shaft and viola! Back in business!!! Thanks for the videos broseph! Jack A.K.A. Welfare Batman Canada
Thanks for the tip, I have the same model, mine was noisy today - thankfully a clean out was enough to get it quiet again. Pity we can't just buy that axel piece.
Thanks for the video! I just bought a used aquarium with an aquaclear 50 that was noisy, checked it out after watching and it turns out my impeller is missing a fin! Thankfully the magnet looks fine so the motor should be ok too.
Oh definitely. I dealt with the AC company and they flat out told me mine was a dud and the place I bought it from sent me a new one right away. That new one was even louder! My tetra is not quiet but one I have had for nearly 10 yrs and it still works and makes the water so clear. I can rinse out the media there too. But the bodies in the Tetra are far superior to the others, they last longer. If the AC could get a thicker plastic and a better motor it would be perfect.
do u think that motor would be compatible with an aqua tech 30-60 power filter look very similar please respond thanks love the video very useful and you definitely hit the nail on the head for me with the sand substrate
I have had aquaclear filters in the past. They are not quiet. Brand new out of the box they make enough noise on my fresh water tank that I was not able to sleep in the same room. They do filter well and are easy to work on.
just returned my aqua clear 20. after two day it got noisy. i couldn't sleep either. i love the fact it has better biological filtration but not at the cost of sleepless nights. so i just got some cheap quiet flow and gotta tell you its quiet! so far so good. what do you recommend besides aquaclear
I have had brand new Aqauclear filters and they are noisy from day 1. I have contacted Aquaclear and they claim that it must be an air bubble. Could never find one. They do seem to be a bit quieter when completely filled with media. Glad you are happy with yours.
there are bs. just return it and try another filter. if thats too noisy return that one too.haha i've went through 4 different filters in the last two weeks. keep the receipts.
Thank you. I have an Aqua Clear 110 on my tank and I really like it other than the rattling that has been rattling since I got it out of the box. Should have returned it but didn't know any better back then. I even called Aqua Clear and the person I spoke to said she has one it is very quiet..... She maybe should have offered some suggestions on how to fix it.... So, I can probably get a smaller size Aqua Clear filter (now a Fluvol product) and switch it out and it will work fine on the 110? I will of course check the impeller and the axel before I purchase a new motor.
I just fixed mine. I was having problems getting it to stop rattling after I cleaned it. Turns out, I needed to make sure the shaft was all the way in before putting the housing back on.
I bought a Tetra EX20 to cycle a new saltwater setup. It is loud, and its running about five or six weeks now. Just replaced the filter bag and carbon. Tried cleaning inside the filter, but there's no dirt. Still as loud. The filter is brand new out of the box. Any suggestions? My tropical tanks are quiet, but the brands are different.
It does appear that way in the video but I don't know why. I really don't think anything is wrong. This filter has been running perfectly since I filmed this about 6 months ago.
Why does my filter media keep popping up. I only have a sponge on bottom and bio rings on top. I clean it yesterday rinsed out media put it back in and it's popping up today. Plus it's loud and doesn't look like it's filtering my tank. I have 2 goldfish in a 55g no sand. My aqua 70 is the only filtration I have at the moment. How would u know if your impeller is not spinning?
Can you guys recommend particular online stores to order these impellers? Also, should I order the shaft separately, in case that also needs replacing? Same deal: I can't find them in local pet stores, they just can't be bothered to carry inventory like this. Besides, it's easier for pet stores to just sell you something new ;)
Oh yeah! is my hobby man, I have 12 fish tanks so that tells you how much I love fishkeeping and all my tanks are planted. So how about you, what's your hobby lately?
I noticed that you had to use force to slip in the impeller in the new pumpmototor and that indicates that something isn´t right! U didnt mention that problem in your video?
Hmm, I haven't owned a Tetra filter in a long time so I'm not very familiar with them. You might try replacing the impeller. Has it always been noisy or just recently?
Seriously, this is a replacement. Guess what? It’s just going to happen again. I’ve rearranged plenty of pieces and parts. A sponge filter on the intake will help keep the sand out.
Turns out the nozzle thingy that connects to the motor to create the suction was the piece making the noise. The piece that looks like a turkey/chicken neck lol. I cut a sliver of sponge and put it under the nozzle. Not the part of the nozzle that goes into the water, just under the nozzle part that sits on top of the filter. No more obnoxious rattling noise. I tried my best to describe the fix. I'm very ignorant to the specific names of parts/filter pieces. Hopefully someone who reads this and understands it will be able to fix their rattling issue lol.
What are the chances of my aquaclear 70 leaking once I take off the motor to clean it and then putting it back on? I haven't even had it for a year, and its starting to make noise. Probably from the sand
There is an o-ring between the motor and body of the filter. If that o-ring is damaged or is out of position then it might leak but I've worked on a bunch of Aquaclear filters and have never had one leak.
Both the ACs and Fluvals are nice but their body build plastic is cheap and thin. My AC is flimsy, and cracks. The C3 already cracked the tube with tender care of cleaning it. Tetras are the only ones I have that have thick durable plastic parts. I am even thinking of buying a Penguin 200 to see how that performs, or Emperor 280. I want to have less noise, and see its build quality. I wish I could buy new motors for all of them and see, but it's just not feasible.
Somewhere I have seen that AC 20 - AC 70 have same power consumption. Potentially possible to upgrade small 20 with another impeller. Hmm, and if somebody has 3D printer, even possible to print impellers.
Thanks! I tried cleaning mine but it didn’t work; I hope to find a way to fix this problem rather than replace the jank - the filter cost $30, the jank causes $15 - kinda whack.
Mine brand new is making a terrible rattle/grinding noise... I tried vaseline with no improvement. I contacted Hagen and they are sending me JUST a new impeller, even though I insisted they send me a new motor or at least the impeller shaft also... They said if the new impeller doesn't fix it I will have to send my motor to them for a replacement. Not really a logical thing to do since the filter will be down for a week or more. We will see I guess.
You do know that you can buy that polished "axle" rod by the foot and trim-to-fit? (McMaster-Carr- $2 for 6" for 1/8",316, stainless rod.) Can't tell the size from here but all major sizes are available you just have to get the folks at the hardware store measure it for you. Insist on food grade stainless like 316 or better not 304.
i just got a new fish and a new tank, it came with everything you need. the filter is making a really loud buzzing noise and i don’t know how to fix it...
As a precaution, I would've lubed the shaft on the new motor... to extend the service life and insure against motor/impeller noise. Also, add a sponge filter over the intake tube, to prevent particles from entering the pump.
I think you have live mosquito larva or something alive in that water that came out of your filter motor 2:40 , Also you have the most algae I have ever seen in a tank.
Please don't give wrong information because you can get each and every part of your filter you can purchase even the impeller rod separately instead of investing on a new motor
