Joe Tex is long overdue for placement in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He hasn't gotten the proper respect, recognition or credit that he rightfully deserves. His passing was a huge loss to the world of Music.
Thanks for this video! I grew up listening and dancing to Joe Tex's songs in the 60s and 70s. He had his own style whether singing up-tempo or slow, i.e "Hold on to What You've Got! Great soul singer! RIP!
Mr. Swoope you scored on this "diamond in the rough". A gem of a story. When you showed the video of him with his first hit and he dropped the mic and did the split, he not only looked like a predecessor to James Brown, but he looked like one to Michael Jackson as well - before Jackie Wilson even. Wow!
I remember him and you are right he should br honored in a big way. I love how you always bring up those people that society has seem to have thrown by the wayside or just simply forgotten. I love you for that!❤💜💙💚💛
Just hearing Jie Tex’s name takes me back to a time when we lived in the pjs!!!!Misic was so much fun and that was such a fun poor time. Didn’t even know you were underprivileged!!!!! We made life good. Our mother made life good!!!!!
He is a wonderful artist. My dad mentioned him to me years ago. I remember the rivalry between the two. One thing you got wrong was that Joe Tex was born in Rogers, TX but was raised in Baytown which is by the Houston, TX area. Great video though.
I can't begin to imagine all the stories your father told you!! I've seen JB (the hardest working man in Hollywood) preform in Philly and he was absolutely awesome!!
You didn't mention "ain't gone bump no more" it was a monster hit in Nashville Tn in the 70's. I was privileged to meet this great soul singer and entertainer. Another great hit was " a sweet woman like you is hard to find"
man, after all those years, i finally read how his life ends...respect to this genius...'sure is good' is the one i always remember from him...all the other songs he sang i remember too but confuse him with other singers..Joe Tex is one da best..
Joe TeX comes in loud and clear on my radar. Real people playing real instruments coupled with great music, lyrics and a dynamic stage presence is something you just don't have nowadays. All Green was the same way. It would have been fun to see what else Joe TeX would have come up with had he lived and continued to produce in the 1980s.
I remember my dad having his music when i was a child. Am 57 goun on 58 now...hmmmm. He came across my mind this week...i wondered what became of him. Thanks to youtube. My how time flies...
It is said Joe Tex cried incessantly upon hearing about the death of Elvis Presley ! He was a huge fan and they both recorded major hits at American Sound studios in Memphis with the same musicians ! I Gotcha was recorded there by Joe, and Suspicious Minds was recorded there by Elvis ! There is a video here on RUclips of the musicians, called the Memphis Boys , playing both songs ! On Skinny Legs and All , the guy saying, “ hey Joe, why don’t you take her “ is Bobby Womack ! It sounds like a live recording but it’s really employees clamming in to make it sound live ! In the studio !
Joe Tex had many great hits....if you want to hear more, get "Papa Was Too", "Show Me", and "S.Y.S.L.J.F.M." He had a way with words and emotion...one of the very best in the 60's
Loved this Man , I had the pleasure of doing a two nighter as his opening act , I’ll always treasure those moments and the wonderful insight I learned from the Man , R.I.P. Joe ! 🙏🏽🙏🏽💯❤️
I was a child with my mom used to play Joe Tex I love buying a book, and that's the way. Yes James Brown sound like him but Joe Tex you can understand and he made you laugh in some of his songs. Thank you for this information I never knew what happened to him, I love his music I got the best of Joe Tex on 3 CDs.
Joe was my favorite..I remember when hold on to what you got!! Came out and what a beautiful song..every lp a classic!! I don't want no girl with them skinny legs!!!
Great job Terry: I remember Joe Tex vividly growing up in that time period. This is the first I've heard about the beef between him and James Brown. Now that you've mentioned it, it's obvious. Their styles were very similar. Thanks for expanding my knowledge.
You kind of felt like you were being yelled at. A good yell. “now give it here. Hold it a long time. Hold it. Don’t turn it loose now hold it a little bit longer nowHold it come on hold it. Kind of a good yell!!
Thanks for sharing history of our "Real" Black singers a time when we could sing I mean really sing no using buttons in the recording studio to level up a voice, but instead a pure human voice.
I'll always remember Joe tex as a kid watching soul train singing I gotcha while damita Jo Freeman the soul train dancer danced on stage to that song I gotcha
The sad thing about this is that if you would've never done this vlog about Joe Tex, nobody else would've. I only remember "gotcha" growing up and this took me back many of years.
From Kenya.he was our favourite singer in high school. Two of Joe Tex great songs were ...hold on to what you've got... and.... buying a book...he was a pioneer of r & b / soul "rap" in his ballads which told great/ funny stories!
To long over due a legend in his own time how could anyone forget the great Joe Tex. It's time to put him in the Rock in Rool hall of fame where he should've been long before JB,MJ, an others that came after him.
He is talented singer and songwriter and storyteller I enjoyed his music very much I got his greatest hits on cd I seen him on soul train when I was was little he left this world a way too soon
You are so right: I just watched a video of Joe Tex and I said wow! He's doing similar dance moves and similar vocal styling as James Brown Thanks for setting things straight
I certainly have heard of Joe Tex but never developed a deep enough interest to study his career. My regrets. Joe Tex could sing though. Very talented man. Any thoughts from you on how I can get more musical knowledge on Joe Tex Terry? Thank you Terry my brother. 😉😊☺✊🙏
Hey Terry I have another request! Please do a video on 80s disco singers, Sharon Redd, Jocelyn Brown, & Carrie Lucas. I would also love for you to do a special on Prelude Records and how disco music took things to a whole different level for black music.

I remember seeing Joe Tex at the Apollo during my youth, yes he was an incredible talent gone to soon. You forget to mention he converted to 'The Nation of Islam' during his latter years and what affect that had on his career.
I'm hugely surprised and disappointed to hear about James's behaviour. They were both talented. Yeah, Joe Tex should have had more recognition. Anyhow, thanks for the music guys. Hope y'all are resting in peace. And thanQ for this video Mr Swoope.
Another dope video Terry! Another fun fact! Did you know Joe Tex made a diss record towards James Brown taking his wife? It's called, "You Keep Her". Check it out when you get a chance!
Again, another talent U neever knew about. That's just unbelievable, how some artist take credit from other artists. I'm need to get on the up and up on music history. His style was similar to James Brown.I think he should get some credit for his singing and dancing style.
I didn't know that he could dance like that he got skills in man I see the similarities between him and James Brown it should be in the Rock and roll Hall of Fame good story thank you looking forward to more.
Long live Joe Tex. Hold on to what you’ve got, The love you save, I got Cha, I ain’t gon bump no mo, I love Joe Tex. We should all remember in the Jackson movie the American Dream, Joe Jackson told Michael to imitate Joe Tex and David Ruffin, not James Brown.
My mother sang "I Gotcha" all through my childhood, and some of my adult years 🙄😏.
Your MOTHER sang “ I Gotcha” to you?🤣🤣.

Yes remember when he brought that big gal onstage on Soul Train, hilarious!

Bout to go watch that now. Me and my friends in high school used too always sing it. Right when one of us was talking to one.
I enjoyed watching and listening to Joe. I remember meeting him at the 20 Grand when he was performing , the show was great.
Thanks my brother for this beautiful bit of history on Joe Tex. Growing up in the islands in the sixties, he was one of my favorites. RIP my brother.

I remember buying a 45 (😳!) of “I Gotcha” when I was a kid, loved the raw feel of it & it led me to music I didn’t know existed
So true, I remembered going 2 his concert in Selma, Alabama at the National Guard Armory. My favorite song was Hold On 2 What U Got.
My favorite JOE TEX song was AIN'T GONNA BUMP NO MO WITH NO BIG FAT WOMAN! it had such a great beat.
