You’re doing a great service to all of us in the market, thanks Stef! I really like the look of this instrument, certainly, and your track sample sounded fantastic. It’s funny, sometimes I think I’m pretty cultured and then I realize I don’t recognize a single instrument name from the patches you used 😂 Time to go down a rabbit hole and study up! Thanks again!
Thanks for demonstrating this instrument Stef. I like the look of it. I was interested in the Er Hu sound because I have an acoustic one. But your demo didn't isolate the Er hu. There was another sound in your demo near the end that I really liked but couldn't identify the instrument. It sounded like a sax, quite warm and fuzzy. I would love to see if other instruments could be patched in like Irish and Scottish bagpipes. I always rate your videos as you explain well, sometimes you get a bit techie and leave me behind as I'm not familiar with all the digital technospeak. Respect 👍
$600 on their online store so a bit more than a akai ewi solo or a Yamaha YDS-120 closer pricing to the akai ewi 5000 or a Roland AE-G0 or Yamaha YDS 150
Thank you SO much for your videos, I really appreciate them :) I want to buy an EWI, I currently play the flute, but which one to buy??? It has to work as a midi controller (which basically they all do) I was convinced to buy the EWI 5000, then saw your video on the AP300, and now I have just watched this video - I like the look of the Robkoo R1 best, but want to have flute fingering on whatever I get . . . Any ideas/advice??? The cost is not that important for me
They're all going to be pretty different from the flute in terms of blowing and fingering, unfortunately, so pick whichever one has the features you want!
Hi Stef Thanks for the video. How do you deal with pinky fingerings lets say going in semitones up down that or playing whole tones as looks like there is only one button for right hand.
short answer is that I don't... with the exception of Eb using my right pinky, I use alternate fingerings for Ab and Bb... 1 and 1 for Bb and 2 and 1 for Ab
That was epic!!! We do find it generally harder to get used to by saxophonists for sure😂 That has a lot to do with the positioning of this model though. We had a lof of beginners in mind when designing this instrument and thought they would definitely have trouble if octave and semitone keys are touch keys.
Makes sense! There are a lot of good reasons to make an instrument a specific way and I try to be mindful of that in my reviews by recognizing that and pointing out my own biases as a saxophonist/experienced professional
It states in the online manuel that the battery is not replaceable. I find that very problematic. How long will the battery last? A rechargeable battery never lasts for ever. The battery on the AKAI EWI Solo for instance is replaceable.
It seems that this R1 has only 20 sounds in presets, don't know how much we can load at max into it, and at which cost because it seems to pay 5$ per sound in app. Has anyone been able to play laptop DAW/Plugin Midi sound with wireless Midi from R1?
Thanks Stef. I agree about the form factor on this instrument. Syphyo goes for round as well but should have had projecting pinky keys of some sort. I think having a decent looking instrument is important. This reminds me a lot of the Yamaha EW-20 windjammr which I think is still the best looking controller ever made. I don't really need the Robkoos lights, I think it's fine without them but they're not a negative.
There are also small ball-like powered speakers that can be plugged directly or by using a short extension adapter/cable into the headphone jack to provide an all-in-one-ish type setup. You may have to add something to fix the speaker’s orientation. It is another battery to keep track of though. If you have a portable PA system, a wireless audio TX/RX pair setup can also work if you are looking for wireless mobility.
@@StefHaynes Yes, so does the Aodyo Sylphyo, which I play. It has 5 dimensions of motion: vertical tilt, axial clockwise rotate, axial anticlockwise rotate, compass rotate, and shake. The Sylphyo also has pitchbend on each key, by gently rotating or sliding the finger. Have you tried the Sylphyo? I also have a Yamaha WX5 and an Akai EWI 4000s. I use all three MIDI wind controllers to play IMOXplus Respiro -- a great software wind synth -- and a Yamaha VL70m hardware wind synth, with the IMOXplus VL70m Wiz editor, which includes a huge library of non-factory presets and control over ALL parameters.
There is always something.. Mostly touch keys but some clicky buttons, Up and down but no side to side.. Come on.. it's like an extra line of code! They already have an I2C chip looking after the touch keys and the same chip that does up and down can do the other 2 axis. I am sure they purposely leave those features out so that they can come out with the new 'improved' or 'pro' version. Irritating when the instrument is 'almost' there, especially for $US 540.. It's a miss for me unfortunately.
Now I want a traditional Chinese instrument jazz album, those all sound so good together like that.
patch bank and preloaded reverbs are quite the accomplishment for such an instrument
That ErHu sounds so incredible
Yeah, they really nailed it with some of the sounds in this thing! Would absolutely use it for film or video game scoring on a tight budget haha

I definitely learned about a couple of new ones. Cool stuff!
Interesting piece of music. Very Chinese sounds and very western composition. Good job.
Hey Stef, this video is amazing! I'm your biggest fan🧡
if you like this you should listen to my EP, Gradualism. It features some of my favourite musicians in Toronto
Comment for the algorithm:P keep up the good work~
haha thanks Ryan!

The Chinese orchestra is mesmerizing; it 's like a soundtrack.

@@StefHaynes OK Stef, thanks for that :)
Very nice!
What is the latency of the Robkoo R1 for the different connection modes (BL or cable)?
I don't notice a difference personally! Bluetooth has been well optimized
Amazing!!!
Great review! I'd love to hear your honest review about the newer entry model, Clarii Mini. Is it anywhere comparable to Roland AE-01 or AKAI EWIs?
I'd love to try one! Maybe Robkoo can send me one!
If only I could afford a norad.
Génial 👍

I am looking at buying this or the Akai ewi 5000. Which is better do you think?
Personally I prefer the key layout and connectivity options on the EWI 5000, but the internal sounds are better on the r1
Hi Steff in one word which one you will select Aerophone AE30 or Akai 5000 or Robkoo R1.
5000! Been playing one for 10 years
@StefHaynes thank you. I don't have any experience with ewi. Want to buy now. So I believe Akai 5000 will have the easiest fingering to start with.
Let me see who it is releasing videos while on vacation 👀
haha... had to do something on the plane!!

What wind synthesizer would you recommend for something that can be played on the go? Like as part of a cosplay.
Well this one could work, only downside is you'd need to connect it to a speaker of some sort! Super curious about who you're cosplaying!
@@StefHaynes primarily a Mandalorian cosplay, was considering making him a sci-fi bard of sorts.

does it have the option for trumpet fingering?
No lip pressure or bite sensor? Only breath pressure and pitch bend?
It's got motion control!

No vibrato on mouthpiece? Cmon
hopefully they add that feature in one of their controllers someday!
🥇🏆🎉❤
Do they prepear some soprano sax sound?
