Soto is 7 years younger than Judge and his skillset/body type will probably age better than Judge, so he deserves far more.
He's not getting $700m but a $600m contract with zero deferrals is within reason. I expect him to get the largest contract in North American pro sports in terms of present value.

I mean, Ohtani got his contract coming off of TJ surgery, and that's the second major I jury he suffered in his pitching arm. I'm not a Dodgers fan, but I hope he goes on to pitch at a high level again, but people need to prepare for the not unlikely scenario that Ohtani will be a perpetually injured player when he pitches.
Given that, the age difference, and the fact he had zero playoff experience compared to Soto, who if not for Strasburg getting it, would have been a World Series MVP.
I'm not saying Soto is better than Ohtani, he isn't. But he's a much, MUCH safer bet than Ohtani as far as a long term contract not being awful by the end. He has almost no injury history and consistently gets better, and has not really even entered his prime. He's going to get better the next 4-6 seasons.

  • @cbtowers4841
    @cbtowers4841 29 дней назад +98

That’s stupid. The contract isn’t based on performance alone, but how much revenue the player generates for the team. It’s business. Ohtani is pretty much paying for his own contract. It’s cheap. Merch, ad space and ticket prices have ballooned. They added a number of new sponsors from Japan and the viewership has skyrocketed. Ohtani is someone people from all over fly to see. Add to that the records he’s broken on his rehab year. Not even close.

This isn't about Pennie's and dollars for owners of teams in major media markets. Owning the team is a plaything for owners of Dodgers, Mets, Yankees. So it doesn't have to balance. If it was the DBacks or the Rangers, yes, you have to be able to pay for the contract with increased revenues, but this isn't the issue for the owners of the big three. For then, it's about pride and desire for championships. It's why Judge, a player who will not age well got the contest he got last year. Yes, Judge sells well globally (you see it here in Europe, Dutch and Germans wearing Judge jerseys). But it's not a good contract longterm. But it increases chance for WS in the next 5 years.
Otani will always "out earn" Soto, but over the length of contract for both players, the increased chance of a WS is similar. And for Steinbrenners, Cohen, and such...that fact matters more than what they can sell since they have more money than god.
Again, the business man says "no way." The prideful billionaire says, "I will dominate the world." It's why the Pads had to trade him and the Yanks just need to fill out the check.

I have to disagree. I really don't think Juan Soto deserves Shohei Ohtani's contract. Don't get me wrong Soto is a hell of a player and come offseason, he will probably get a fat contract. I personally think Shohei is a better hitter, but even if I were to concede that Soto is a better hitter, he doesn't PITCH. Shohei's $700m is an evaluation of his talent as a hitter AND a pitcher. Even if Shohei wasn't a pitcher, he is still raking in cash for the Dodgers... an obscene amount of cash. He's served the Dodgers organization millions of Japanese ball fans on a silver platter. The Dodgers will make every penny back and some from Shohei's contract. No other player deserves Shohei's contract IMO.

Personally would disagree. Shohei Ohtani getting $700,000,000 wasn’t solely because he can win games. It was also because Shohei Ohtani gives the Dodgers and MLB as a whole a lot more revenue, so even if he bombs in LA, he’s still worth it. Juan Soto just doesn’t have that type of star power. Personally I would give him a 13-15 year contract worth 550-650mil (and before people say this is basically Ohtani money Ohtani is for 10 years. Look man, Yankees stadium field is like a Lego version of a real baseball field in comparison, his defense was average at best and tracking sucked, so you can write him up to be a DH by 2 season from now. No even as a 26 year old Soto does not deserve 700m, if anything on the high end is worth $490m because you paying for a glorified DH who on average will hit 3.2 times a game and can’t run bases to save his career (yanks don’t practice base running). I respect everything he’s been able to accomplish but Soto is literally Max muncy mixed Luis Arraez, and that’s Phenomenal for batting but everything else is mid at best. Soto is a great player, but 700M is insanity. Shohei is way more valuable not only on court but off court is even more. You can debate the dodgers already made 500M + this season alone cuz of shohei. Soto is a great player but at most 500M. The Dodgers could've gave Shohei a billion dollar contract and they still would be able to get that money back. He's the most marketable player in the sport and he brings a lot of eyes to the team he's playing on. Japanese companies and their ads go wherever Shohei decides to go. The only thing you get from Soto is an amazing hitter and that's pretty much it. You can make an argument he deserves Judge's contract, even though Judge is still the better player, but no one else besides Shohei is worth anything near $500 mil, let alone $700 mil.

You have NO IDEA how contract is offered. Contract money is determined not just based on on-the-field performance, but also based on off-the-field performance as well. The reason why Dodgers got to be able to offer Ohtani $700 million is two-fold: 1. Ohtani was willing defer $680 million out of $700 million for the period of 2034 to 2043 year, which brings down the value of contract to $480 million in present value. 2. Ohtani brings more than $70 million to Dodgers as additional revenue annually in a way of increased ad money, Japanese TV rights, increased merchandise revenue, increased stadium ticket revenue, e.t.c. Ohtani himself has the highest endorsement income of $65 million in 2024 while Bryce Harper $7 million as the second place. How much did Soto make on it ? He is nowhere to be seen on top 10 players list. He has insignificant star power to bring additional revenue to the ball club. No matter how talented Soto may be on the field of baseball, there’s NO WAY that Soto will be offered Ohtani money, therefore. At the end of the day baseball is business. Soto’s value will be determined based on his business value.

Since Soto can’t field and baseball needs more than one star to win..

In 2018 2 players started their MLB career.
1st player career stat line as of today:
    36.5 WAR/3280 AB/934 H/201 HR/.285 BA
2nd player career stat line as of today:
    43.8 WAR/3119 AB/878 H/225 HR/.282 BA
Pretty similar numbers but notice how the 1st player has 161 more AB than the 2nd yet the 2nd player has more WAR and home runs while being slightly behind on hits and BA.
Oh yea I forgot to mention that 2nd player is a starting cy young level pitcher in Shohei Ohtani and 1st player is Juan Soto.
So in conclusion, NO. Juan Soto does not deserve Shohei Ohtani money. Dont even get me started on their market value to their franchises and to the league. But it's not a knock on Soto because NO ONE in MLB deserves Shohei Ohtani money but Shohei Ohtani

However, he’s setting a horrific example! He played a significant role in the selfish play in San Diego. If that’s too far of a reach, he’s been inconsistent. His flash any attitude are an unfortunate example. Taking to social media to air his laundry with the Nats is just gross. Shohei is class all the way around. He also is an exceptional, once in a generation player. To suggest that Soto deserves this is laughable. It’s just not true.

The MLB is probably averaging the highest viewership numbers ever because of Ohtani and its only Ohtani. Japan and most of America isnt tuning in to watch every Yankees game and they have Judge and Soto. Ohtani is on a different level of marketability. Its not even close. Im not even a dodgers fan. Soto cannot pitch, especially not at an ace level, in addition to being a power hitter and able to play the outfield. Not only that, Shohei is not just a 2-way superstar, he's a BRAND, AN ICON! Casuals who rarely watch baseball are learning the name Shohei Ohtani! He's soon to become Major League Baseball's Michael Jordan. Not only that but he's also pulling MILLIONS of viewers from overseas. Half the population of Japan is now watching MLB games early in the morning because of him. When you think of Major League Baseball, you don't think of Juan Soto, you think of SHOHEI OHTANI and the Los Angeles Dodgers! And yes, Soto is a great player, he deserves a lot of money, just not $700 Million. And if you're willing to pay him that, then you might as well pay Shohei $1 Billion.

"Deserves" is always a tough thing to itemize when it comes to sports contracts. Otani will give the Dodgers the Japanese market they can exploit. And he's a great player on a HOF trajectory if he stays healthy (tears for Mike Trout's greatness). From a financial perceptive Otani will always be more valuable. Sadly the Latin market doesn't have the financial marketplace for exploitation like Japan.
But, if you feel Soto will bring you 3-5 more WS wins, and you control the largest media market in the world...Soto is worth a billion dollars and the Yanks owners can pay it.
So, if I'm the GM of the Yankees and I have a 26 year old who took a sad 2023 team and took them to the WS...I'd let Boras fill in the numbers. Financially it will pay likely but it will probably bring you more trips to October and that means you keep owning New York.
