Your best shot of 2 to 3 hundred pound cow tunas.....is in the sea of Cortez and the seas out of cabo.....I would love to go on a 14day cow tuna hunt....on the EXCELL...our of sanfrancisco..CA..
It's funny....just when you think that they are about to give up....and you get them within the fishes sight of the boat.....they cone alive and burn around 25 to 30 yards of line off of your spool....I was catching them one time as y'all are now....and I got a hit just like all the rest....I fought the fish until I thought she was giving up.....but she gained sight of the boat and took off...like there was no tomorrow... I had as much drag on her that was possible...with getting broke off....I never stopped her....the last.time I looked down at my spool...I had about 10yards of line left...so I put my finger on he side of my spool....in a last effort to turn her...she wasn't having any...the next thing I knew ....I felt a hard tug and heard a loud pop!!! Yep you guessed it!!! GOT SPOOLED!!!!
Before I would go to California...to cow hunt.... I would get with hooked up with JOE VT....And let him recomend the time of year....and location...to hunt mammoth cow Tunas....I personally would fish with him....this...in my opinion....is your best chance...of killing a huge cow!!!
