Ariel Kiley, who played Tracee, was in an interview talking about James Gandolfino after he died. She said he was really kind and would talk to her about her career, telling her she should go back to college and finish her degree. He used to call and check in her to see how she was a is he was an uncle. It was really sweet to hear how an actress who was on the show for just one episode was touched by James.
Cristy is spot on. Knowing instantly Tony should not have hit Ralphie. Also the comments about the mob guys being funny and then seeing their true nature. This was a focus of David Chase this season. He wanted to remind the audience these are not good people despite the humor
I like episode 6, "University". Obviously focused around the three young women; Meadow, Caitlin(roomate), and Tracee(stripper) Med is very privileged. Has every opportunity. Street smart, book smart, the world is at her feet based on her upbringing. Tracee is at the bottom of that scale. Shit upbringing, school dropout and probably multiple abusive relationships which led her down the road to being a stripper / "whoooah". Then there's Caitlin. A fish out of water from a small town in OK, entering the mean streets of the Big Apple where you have to have a thick skin to survive. She's also privileged but very sheltered. It's culture shock compounded with latent mental health issues. For Caitlin, she doesn't realize that people like Tracee exist / what their life is like day to day. The worst thing that happens to Caitlin is a homeless woman with a daily news up her butt and a smelly subway train. A day in the life of Tracee would give Caitlin a full psychotic break. Loved how this episode parallels the 3 of them beautifully. It really is a standout episode.
Noah is an asshole to Meadow, "I think we should stop seeing each other." And "You're so negative....." Funny she wasn't so negative or cynical for him when he was having sex with her though?! 🤬 I'm a bloke, but I'm ashamed of the behaviour of men like that, makes me sick! 😡
Episode 6 is one of my handful of favorites from the series. You really gotta think about the deeper ideas of privilege, class and mental health among Meadow, Tracee and Caitlin to fully appreciate it. The themes are really on the nose. But it’s so well executed and shocking that you can’t help but appreciate it.
Been watching Sopranos reactions for a while now. You are so good at it that I finally watched a reaction to University, which I've avoided for a while due to the Tracee/Ralphie scene. I got through it by ignoring your show clip and just watching your facial reaction. Looking forward to the rest of this great season in your eyes...
I agree, she should have told him or that he at least finds out… because the legal system won’t deal with him appropriately and he’ll do it again… even if she just wants to move on and not deal with it anymore nor wants the responsibility of him “disappearing”…
As you noted, "University" was written to remind us of just how monstrous these characters are, and how depraved the system within which they operate is, as David Chase was concerned about the "glamorizing" nature of the show overall. It's also an indictment of class privilege and exploitation: note that Tony voices objection to Ralphie's disrespect for "this place", rather than for the life of a young woman. Its airing resulted in a backlash against the show, and HBO, who lost subscribers, as people objected to the violence, to being made to face the true nature of the show's "heroes". Thanks for the awesome reactions!
Joe Pantoliano, the actor who played Ralphie, said he received more fan mail from women than he ever received in his life after this episode aired where he beat Tracey. He said he found it very disturbing.
That song, Living on a Thin Line by The Kinks, is one of my favorite uses of a song fitting into a story narrative. The Kinks made the song as they were lamenting how the British Government basically stabbed the working class in the back after WW2 with their policies. Like the hopeful soul was gone from the nation after. "All the wars that were won or lost somehow don't seem to matter very much anymore." At the end of the episode, the same message stands of the Mafia. Tony and the crew like to see it as The Godfather, an "honourable" thing. That may have been at one time, but now its losers and bullies like Ralphie doing what he did to that girl. The soul is gone from it. David Chase, who wrote The Sopranos says its always the song he gets asked most about (Other than Woke Up This Morning).
Honestly, Noah has his sights set on his future waaay down the road from where he is now in college & there was no way he was ever gonna be serious about Meadow. He's just taking advantage of young naive girls & that's why Meadow thinks she's getting mixed signals from him. Her good mood the day after they sleep together & telling Carmella she might love him or whatever just shows her inexperience with this stuff. Also, there's a fan theory (I don't know if I necessarily believe it) that Noah slept with Caitlin that night she showed up at his room & that's why he got a C-. Then he had his dad get the restraining order against Caitlin & broke up with Meadow to get out of the situation so he could move on to the next girl.
Noah is an asshole. I don’t even know what to say about Ralphie. Can’t write words strong enough. The story about tracee is so hard to watch. Very disturbing. But an important episode.
At this point you've only watched 32 episodes out of 86, so you're well under halfway through. Season 6 is basically a double-length season so effectively there are 7 seasons, the midpoint being during season 4.
Ralphie had the same physical affect on me too the first time watching. But it’s a testament to how got of an actor Joe Pantoliano. He also played one of the Fratelli brothers in the Goonies lol
It was fairly widely perceived that everyone was too in love with the characters and David Chase said he had to make people remember that these characters, aren’t good people, it gets real, real dark from here on out.
Cristy you probably got a massive backlog of films/shows to watch so might I suggest these three: Kung Fu Hustle(movie) Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd (movie) The Righteous Gemstones (show) I think you would enjoy them 😊
We try our best to be genuine and authentic to the nature of the show, while still trying to protect us from warnings or copyright dings. It’s definitely a hard line to walk!
In the wake of this episode, HBO supposedly got plenty of calls from viewers who were outraged enough about Ralphie killing Tracee that they cancelled their subscription to the channel.
"She has a beautiful chest area." 😆 It's a good thing you already saw Gladiator. Otherwise Ralphie would've spoiled it for you 😅 Poor Tracee. Ralphie is the worst.
I like your analogy about Richie Aprile & Ralph Cifaretto. Richie was old school & wanted things back like before, not wanting to wait but did respect Junior. Ralphie is just a nut job, he is smarter than Richie and earns more but he is evil with no regards for anyone. A true loser!
CRISTY, you have very good instinct, you know not to like Ralphie, and after the “University” episode you were 💯right😉 Also Bada Bing Song: Living on a Thin Line - The Kinks
Tracee is it pursuing Tony, she wanted to be friends with him. She needed a supporting group of friends. All she had was Ralph and her kid and the strippers.
I know it isn’t aimed at me but it’s still a bit hurtful to repeatedly hear your name in the same breath as so much hatred, scorn and derision. People sometimes add a “y” (not “ie”) to my name and those who do will often add “boy” or “baby” to it (I’m 55). In his wayward, faraway youth Ralphyboy/Ralphybaby might’ve drunkenly attempted to create life in a car park, or pee against a wall but parking lot shenanigans are where the similarities between me and Ralphie end.
Cristy, did you come up with “it’s like killing 2 birds with one gun and a car crash” on your own? That was a great line and hilarious. If you came up with that on the spot then I have to give much respect. That was golden!
Technically Johnny Sacks can override pretty much any call Tony makes. In the hierarchy of the American Mafia the "Five Families" aka the 5 main NYC families (Bonanno, Colombo, Gambino, Genovese, and Lucchese) had all of the other smaller families across the country including the rather large "Chicago Outfit" under them, each of these smaller families reported to and were represented by one of the Five Families. In this fictional depiction of the Soprano's the Demeo family (which Tony is the boss of) reports to and is under the Lupertazzi crime family which is who Johnny Sacks is the Underboss of. The two fictional families are based on the Decavalcante family for the Demeo family and the Genovese family for the Lupertazzi family.
The DiMeo family (or "Jersey") is not depicted as "reporting to" the Lupertazzi, in fact it is explicitly referred to as a mutually beneficial partnership. In fact, (without going into spoilers) much of the conflict in the show comes from instances where they disagreed. If they "reported to them," a lot of the show's big plot points would be moot, particularly in seasons 5 and 6.
I enjoy your reactions but I have a nitpick that is driving me insane. Your outro/commentary background music is super distracting to me, to the point that I can barely concentrate on what you're saying.
Thanks for the feedback! Is this something you noticed only in this video or does it happen in all of them? I think maybe the music volume was slightly too loud in this one
@@CristyReactsThe volume seems the same to last week's episode, but it's also not the volume so much, I think the song is just way too busy for background music. But I'm also someone who can't work or study while listening to most music, so maybe it's just a personal problem.
@@CristyReactsI mean it's the same song, so yeah. But to be fair I generally skip the intro so it's whatever. Nothing personal, I do that with any react content because it's usually just "Previously, on LOST" and I want to get to the reaction. I do like listening to the wrap up thoughts though.
No, I know, I've just been thinking about changing the outro song but keeping the same one for the intro. I'll play around with various tracks and see! Thanks for the feedback!
