Hi Friends! Glenn Fricker shows us how he mixes a Math Rock by Christian Vegh featuring Matt Starr on Drums and Tony Franklin on fretless Bass! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Agreed. Want a great drum sound? Get a great player. They know how to play consistently. Nothing will drive your day crazy more that a guy who can't hit the Drum in the same spot for the Back Beat. But you also in most cases want a Kit that's well tuned and together mechanically with no loose rattling or squeaky hardware and heads that aren't beat to hell. That goes a long way.
I appreciate this entire video quite a bit, especially because I also use 3 mic's on the snare and a trigger for side-chain gating (Sm57 and NT-5 held in phase on the top with a Wilkinsons clip , and a CAD 411 on the bottom exactly opposite angled) and until this I never thought of sending the bottom snare signal without a gate for ghost notes. Cool trick! Thanks!
Nice one. I got the full course and it was well explained. I'm almost finished my mix and I'm not using a lot of compression on individual tracks but liking a bit of bus compression to bring it all together. I don't have much experience in mixing jazz-y tracks and I think I will need to automate some of the compression because of the dynamics of the track.
How to mix great snare: 1. Have great snare 2. Have a great drummer 3. Have the drummer play perfectly. 4. Mic the snare any way you want, as long as it doesn't clip. 5. Done , great snare in the mix.
You need to tune the snare, maybe to the song, proper mic selection, proper mic placement, isolation when needed, take care of phase alignment etc etc, you're simplifying this way too much lol.
Thanks ever so much! Yes, I love it! You get to mix Tony Franklin for goodness sakes! Haha Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
Hey Glenn, Have you thought about going through your studio rack gear for your viewers? I only ask, because I see off to your left in this video you have quite a few add ons on the bottom rack, and I've always been curious how those actually hook up and are utilized in a mixing scenario. I've seen them sold piece by piece on websites like musicians friend, sweet water, etc, but I've never seen anyone explain how they are installed and are used in a real time scenario. Thanks for the videos! Cheers from the US!
which are your go to pres on drums? do you ever use the rme pres and for what for...a presentation on your setup and wiring would also be great...thanks
Hey Glenn or Warren... Where was this tracked? It sounds like Warren's snare/room, correct? Anyway, think I'm going to pick this one up and go for a more 'traditional progressive' sound than Glenn's got going on here.. We'll see where that goes, if the raw tracks are flexible enough for that, (hope so).. I guess I'll find out...If not, I may have to mix in some **shutter** samples...haha..
Hi Steve A yes!! Glenn Flew out to LA and tracked drums at my studio with Matt Starr! Glenn produced and engineered the track! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
At 2:02 you're really getting into Ludwig drugs? They must be good! Bottom mic does sound papery. Did you flop the polarity on it? I do on mine and man, what a difference when you combine..
Yes, he printed the bottom snare with the polarity flipped. Ultimately the Drummer has control over the snare sound and obviously someone as talented as Matt Starr should have control over it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
So many people bitching in the comments "boo hoo the drums are overcompressed, no life left". Tell you what - go buy the tracks and outmix Glenn. Then you'll have the right to bitch. But that won't happen, cause if you were able to do that, you'd be out there making great records instead of dropping salty comments on youtube. Go get a life.
Do i love glenn's mix? I'm not too crazy about it, i think the song might need a bit more gentle processing. But it's a solid mix nontheless, so i'm not insulting him or trying to discredit him as a mixer. Not being a cunt goes a long way, guys!
Hi a te haha would you know what someone like that looks like? Haha Glenn looks like a guy who loves his Rock to me!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
Why does the waveforms looks so limited ? Did someone put it thru DrumLeveler before and not tell us ? And i get a more natural sound with the help of samples, than this totaly overcompressed drums. And in modern metal, in the end, the drums sounds like Midi anyway.
Yes, indeed, we all listen to music differently and hear it different ways! As Andy Wallace points out no one listens in solo! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I allready noticed in the playthrough video on glenn's channel, but there's quite a lot of compression going on with the drums, especially on the background ambient/room/verb sound, rathe r unpleasant imo.
bought the whole thing...hopefully the tracks themselves will make up for the 37 dollars...cause the explenatory videos...totally amateur...sorry but thats what i experienced with this ...
exactly...if you watch the video with matt playing he hits the c12 on the rack tom during a fill...ouch...warren's assistant...dude keep doing the edits and stuff...leave the rest to someone who knows more than software ;-)

thanks warren and glenn for the great work !!
You're very welcome! I'm so glad to be able to help! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
It doesn't take much to get a great snare sound in terms of processing when you've got a great drummer!
I agree! I love recording Matt Starr's Drums! He's such a great player! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

I'll have to ask Glenn to answer this! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Sure! It's on my "to do" list!

which are your go to pres on drums? do you ever use the rme pres and for what for...a presentation on your setup and wiring would also be great...thanks
Hi Yannis! Great question! Glenn? Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
Ditch the condenser if you have the bottom mic'd. 421 on top for phat and switch out the 57 for the MB75
Niiiiiice sounding drums.

He said Ludwig Drugs 😀 respect 😎
Haha I think he might of!? Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
you could have shown how the processing sounds in the mix after you've done it, how am I supposed to reference if anything was improved
Hey Glenn, just wondering which albums you mixed/produced? Been searching everywhere to no avail.
At 2:02 you're really getting into Ludwig drugs? They must be good!
Bottom mic does sound papery. Did you flop the polarity on it?

Glad to see pros using reaper!
I love that you use Reaper, but why not logic pro? Sorry I know you get this question a lot.
Matt van den Ham he doesn't use mac
Hi Matt van den Ham all the DAWs do great things! Use whichever one you know best! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
Hi mytt88 yes! You are correct! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren

“ghosting is something ive struggled with for the longest time”
Is that Mr. SpectreSoundStudios?
That sounds so much like Chon!
I believe you have the Audix i5 on the bottom.. 🎅
The 50% of the sound is the Reverb

It's ok! I hear you! Everyone has their own idea of how something should sound! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
i agree boss, i'm just not really happy with the way some people choose to express that idea
Hi Hog Blockula I understand! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
He screwed it up during tracking. The waveforms are completely flattened. He may as well have just pasted a sample over some bleed.
Glen looks like the guy who trolls athletes and movie stars online.
Hi a te haha would you know what someone like that looks like? Haha Glenn looks like a guy who loves his Rock to me!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren

I just stumbled upon this comment just now. I admire your positivity man. You’re a true gentleman and a class act.
Why does the waveforms looks so limited ? Did someone put it thru DrumLeveler before and not tell us ? And i get a more natural sound with the help of samples, than this totaly overcompressed drums. And in modern metal, in the end, the drums sounds like Midi anyway.
what is he doing ? sorry i dunno anything about music
Haha he is mixing snare drum! That's part of a drum kit, just one element! Many thanks Warren
1073 is a 12k lift
Thanks Alex!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
I like “the Drummers getting mad at your for gating there ghost notes”
Sounds like Gentle Giant
The one thing no one ever does, is when you get crap drums.
In the mix, the snare sounds pretty good, even though it is squashed to shit, but honestly those cymbals pumping kinda ruin it for me
Yes, indeed, we all listen to music differently and hear it different ways! As Andy Wallace points out no one listens in solo! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
How can he hear with all that hair
I allready noticed in the playthrough video on glenn's channel, but there's quite a lot of compression going on with the drums, especially on the background ambient/room/verb sound, rathe r unpleasant imo.

Slate stuff, sounds plastic to me,i dont like this.
Nothing to do with the Slate plugins. Look at the waveforms, the tracks were pretty much ruined during tracking.
