It was funny when the ATC asked the UPS 747 for a wing shake (like they do for the smaller planes) so he could verify where the 747 was! I think they did it too. After the 747 landed, the UPS pilots shot back at the ATC that they didn't get a welcome to Oshkosh and of course the ATC replied with welcome to Oshkosh!

...twin jets may have taken over, but the 747 will always the be "Queen of the Skies" even if she only carries cargo.
A half century since it first took to the skies. Seems like only yesterday as I still have memories of seeing the first 747 land In Milwaukee, (a Pan Am flight diverted from O'Hare due to weather and mechanical issues in spring of 1970). Flew on several 747s over the years, including across the Atlantic and back from Hawai'i. There will never be an aircraft quite like her again.
Ironic that the big attraction is a cargo rather than passenger version of the venerable giant as in a way as its roots stem from the CX-HLS competition to develop a high capacity strategic transport for the USAF that could load and haul oversized payloads. While Lockheed won with their C-5, the idea wasn't totally scrapped by Boeing, as Juan Trippe was interested in an aircraft that could carry a larger passenger load than a 707 or DC-8 could for Pan Am. In its early development stage, the 747 was actually considered an interim aircraft as it was thought that supersonic transports like the 2707 and Concorde would be the wave of the future and take over long range overseas operations. Hence Boeing designed the 747 at the time with the idea of conversion to a freighter in mind. So in a way, given that passenger carriers today are retiring their 747s in favour of long rage twin jets, and the -8F, has outsold -8I, the 747 has sort of come full circle.
Also nice seeing one of Boeing's former "giants", the B-29, in the background as well.
