I sized it down for mixing in a 5 gal bucket the recipe below will make about 4.64 gal (17.56L) of slip. 2.8 gal (10.6L) Water 16.7 lbs (7.57 kg) KT 1-4 ball Clay 25.0 lbs (11.34 kg) Talc-Pioneer C98 1.5 tsp or 0.66 oz (18.6 g) Soda Ash 1.3 oz (36.9 g) Sodium Silicate For those of you asking questions about the clay, "KT" is the name of the manufacture which is Kentucky-Tennessee clay company which is a division of Imerys materials. 1-4 ball clay is the specific grade of clay and is a combination of Kentucky OM4 and Tennessee #1 SGP ball clay.
This is the first slip recipe I used and is still the one I use now about a year later. I have a small shop in my home and I make bisque that I sell to people who will eventually finish the pieces. I also sell slip to others who do not mix there own. I tried a premixed powder for a little while but found the green ware to be a little to brittle for my clumsy hands and went back to this recipe. Thank you for sharing this recipe because it has served me well over the last year.
Linster9977 Good morning I live in Brazil and would like to obtain this recipe because I did not identify this products correctly, if it were possible to pass me.
ball clay (serve qqr argila plástica para cerâmica branca), talco ... talco industrial ... silicato de sódio (tb conhecido como vidro liquido) ... ash soda (carbonato de sódio ou barrilha leve)
Hello, if you ask me and nobody has, I think the soda ash should go in first. It makes the water more basic in pH (which is farther from clay's iso electric point) which will keep the tiny particles away from each other better. Then, once all the powder is added I would add the sodium silicate to reduce the effective double layer diameter around each little tiny particle which will increase the slip's specific gravity. (1 container of slip/1 container of water=specific gravity. Aim for 1.75 ish). For a good explanation, google "Mechanisms of action of deflocculants and dispersants in ceramic bodies". There's a good pdf by that name.
Good day, Darren Davis. KT 1-4 or equivalent of 3- 50 lbs of talc! Please, explain this muddy waters. Did you add two bags of KT and two bags of talc then? Or equal or more talc? 150 lbs of talc or 100 lbs? Pardon me if necessary.
Darrem Davis, Good morning I live in Brazil and would like to obtain this recipe because I did not identify this products correctly, if it were possible to pass me
Thank you so much for the video. I have found that finding pre-made slip to purchase is near impossible. Is it possible to make this recipe in smaller batches? Also do you leave the slip stored in the metal container or separate into smaller buckets? Thank you again!
+Darren Davis has nothing to do with the molds. the clay from Kentucky is so thick it doesn't pour, it won't go into the details of your mold. you MUST add water.
+dennis curry to answer my own question, i have not had much luck using Tennessee ball clay instead of the kt1-4 but have had success with OM4 as a replacement
Need to know where to get these materials please? I'm starting my own ceramic business and have called every where and cannot find these materials. Please help!!! Thanks Jennifer
Jennifer Davis isn't that kind of like saying you're starting your own taxi cab company but you don't know where to buy a car? Seriously, the first step before starting a business should be researching where you will be getting the materials. It's been 4 years and I wonder if she actually ever did start the business.
Hi Jennifer where do you live there are stores every where in NM UT CO AZ but i dont know any where else new mexico clay in ABQ.NM is a good store and might ship to you It all depends on where you live. Thanks Let me know
Components are a secret I suppose (but, with hints...one is called KT). If it is not intentional, then I cannot help saying: "This is when a drywall guy tries to be a teacher."

I got the slip in a box from New Mexico clay do you now how to mix it. all I know is add water but that is it. I don't know thick or nothing.
If its slip in a box its already mixed and ready
+Alicia Otto may need to add water. it should be just slightly runnier than pancake batter.
+Darren Davis Mine comes from Kentucky, it you MUST add water. It's way to thick to use right out of the box.
+Janice Podgurski the slip I got from nmclay.was ready mixed if your molds are new you can add water but older ones I would not
+Darren Davis has nothing to do with the molds. the clay from Kentucky is so thick it doesn't pour, it won't go into the details of your mold. you MUST add water.
