  • Super short tip today on how to use a tool in Lightroom to assess and correct white balance in dog photographs! We've seen lots of photos in the Facebook group recently which are awesome but just haven't got a good colour balance. Usually, they're too green and cool (oddly!) so in this video, we assess and correct the white balance of an image using both our eyes and a tool in Adobe Lightroom.
Remember that you can always cover your white balance bases by using a grey card, my favourite is this one: amzn.to/3d3BWXl

Awesome tip! I consider myself well versed in LR, but always watch videos to learn new things. And today, I did. Hovering over the whites and grey with the HSL to see what colors are there is a fantastic tip! Thank you

You are very intelligent..... Kudos to you , I have been doing photography for over 10 years and have actually stopped watching RUclips tutorials for photography, as I think there's nothing much left in them for learning, but I was surprised when I saw your video (I am talking about your 2 sliders to fix white balance video) that was really smart, intelligent way of fixing white balance , ...became a instant fan of your videos ... 👍🏼😬

Hadn't seen this one before, but I likes your other white balance method more, (the one where you max out the vibrance and saturation then eliminate the colour cast) perhaps because it was less subjective in getting to a balanced starting point.

Nice touch in LR on that photo! Not just a photographer, are you-but that was evident in your photos. Now understanding the depth of your final point in "10 Tips..." r.e., hey, do some editing on those photos. I'm working my way toward viewing your "Full edit..." video. Having replaced my PS & LR with Affinity Photo, Topaz Labs, and Luminar 4, it will be fun to follow your process and convert the adjustments to my software. Thankfully, I have 249 neighbors who like to walk their dogs outdoors and will become my "paid but untrained" models. 😄

RAW & White balance and why get it right in camera. A correct white balance gives better exposure results.
An i.s.o. setting low enough to capture fine detail with low noise and a properly exposed image gives the greatest amount of image detail.
You can't change in post what you've already captured in camera. White balance is no different than i.s.o.,all you can do is modify it through the subtraction or addition in gain.
White balance needs to be correct as possible from the start.
A sensor must have a certain response to light and the colors it sees depending on the materials it's made from and the color filters used. There has to be a neutral fixed white balance or a color temperature that it works best at.
The silicone that digital video sensors are made from, are almost always more sensitive at the red end of the spectrum.
So as a result all sensors tend to produce the best result with light that has alot of blue(to make up for the lack of blue sensitivity) and not to much red.
So most cameras preform best with daylight and as a result most sensors are considered daylight balanced.
If a camera produces a great image under daylight, how can you possibly get a great image under tungsten without adjusting something?
Somehow you need to change the red and blue channels. Do it in camera and what you get is optimised for your choice of color temperature at the time of shooting.
But you can always change or undo this in post by subtracting or adding to what was added in the camera. If you want anything other than the native response you'll have to do it in post. You will be recording at the cameras native white balance. If you want a different color temperature you'll have to add or subtract gain at the RGB channels in post to alter it. So you not really changing the actual white balance.
Either way what you record has a nominal white balance and anything you do in post is skewing what you have recorded using gain. There is no such a camera with no native white balance, all cameras will favor one paticular color temperature.
So if you want the very best image quality, the best method is to adjust at the time of recording.
Raw doesn't magically not have a white balance,so shooting at the wrong white balance and correcting it in post is not something you should want to do.

You spent a lot of time and effort writing this comment, good for you!
This video is for those times when the light changes and you need to find the correct white balance 👌
Shooting dogs outdoors on location will never provide a static or perfect white balance throughout, two shots 2 minutes apart can have different light temperatures, so knowing how to correct is vitally important for pet photographers. Hence this video ☺️
