Hi am new to your channel and I just wanted to say Thank you for all your videos they're very helpful! Do you have any camera recommendations I really want to stay below $800 if at all possible that includes the lens. I really like to be able to do the action shots like you talk about in your videos maybe even some landscape and astrophotography. I would also like to do large prints. Hello first of all awesome video. Second of all tomorrow I have my first gig and this is very helpful, but what do you use to edit. I hope we can get in touch as soon as possible and have a nice day! Nvr mind answered my question thank you so much for the helpful video! @That Dog Spot
Hey. Love your channel, loved the video. I tried to take on the advice about shooting close to the dog, having him far away from the trees with back light etc. However, when ever I do this parts of my dogs face always end up being out of focus, because the depth of field is too deep. I’m shooting with a 56mm (86mm on full frame) on a apsc Fujifilm xt4. I usually shoot between 1.2 and f2.5. Should I literally just up the aperture between f4-5? This focal length is quite new to me, and tips would be fantastic. Thanks
Hi Robbie, I think you mean the depth of field is too shallow (aka, a super small strip of focus)? I do not worry about parts of the face/head being out of focus at all, as long as the eyes are super sharp. Remember the importance of the ratio rather than the literal distance. So to get more depth of field from distance rather than aperture, you'd need to move the dog further from the background and then you further from the dog as well, essentially increasing the distances simultaneously. Hope this makes sense!
It's so so true Chris! Especially with this kind of thing - you need to be really "seeing" what you're doing each time out and without the practice, it comes down to luck a lot of the time! So pleased you enjoyed this video 😊
Fantastic!!! You mentioned keep wide but for your end result image what focal length was you at and how wide was you? Did you stay at 70mm and maybe f2.8? I currently don’t yet have the budget for 70-200 yet so I’m currently using either a 105mm macro 2.8 or an old 24-70 so I’m curious if I need to think about 70-200 or if I can get away with what I have currently. Thanks. I’m self taught from people like yourself from RUclips so I’ve made sure I’ve subscribed 😊
Were you using a reflector? You shoot against the setting sun yet the Pipi's face seems nicely lit. Are you using reflectors for dog portraits outside. Or some lights outside, if so are they classic speed lights or something bigger?
Hey, nope no reflectors, just nice soft light ☺️ the trick is being nicely in the shade with the sun just peaking through the trees, then, as you expose for the subject in the shade, you do not need a reflector. If there were no trees there, the tables would turn and a reflector or OCF would be required to get the same balance in the light for sure 👌
Hello! You've inspired me to get out my camera that I haven't used in years. Thank you for the wonderful videos! Question, would you ever do a video for budget photos? Aka budget lenses, diy backgrounds, etc. My camera came with a prime lens that doesn't seem useful for doggos :( Thanks for considering!
Hey Jules, which prime lens did it come with? Can you share some more details? The best budget lenses vary depending on brand and budget for one person may not be budget for another so it gets a bit tricky you know?
@@ThatPhotographySpot hi! Thank you for replying ☺️ I have a Canon 7D mark II. The lens is a 50mm 1:1.4. I assume thats an expensive body but I don't have the budget to match for a lens right now
Hi, When you switch to PS and save the picture and continue in Lightroom then it is not a raw file anymore right? Is there any disadvantage if I continue editing in Lightroom? Should I do the PS work like removing stuff at the end and don't continue editing in Lightroom?
Top of the day to you young lady, just found your channel and this video and tips are great and can maybe also used for small children ! Love your style and clear info>> also learnt something new in Lightroom as I have never used the radial filter so thank you very much! Just added my first dog image to my Instagram page of a neighbours dog, but not much room for bokay! As his size was a bit intimidating @wjbphotographyuk blessings to you and will subscribe and follow ya like the pied piper 📸📸
@@ThatPhotographySpot as mentioned you keep it real and to the point> Sunday morning went for a walk in our local Park in London UK- took my D750 & 80-200 f2.8 with me! And saw the most amazing Italian grey Bull Mastiff with his owner! He was happy when I asked if I can get a few shots! Went down flat as you suggested and fired off a few exposures! Now want to try your editing tips and will put up in the Morning so pls let me know what you think. Need to make that new brush for sharpening the eyes 📷 @wjbphotographyuk
I only really shoot wide-angle outdoors with off-camera flash, so that's part of it. Another part of it is that the background has a lot of "stuff" in it outside the trees, so to get the same level of bokeh, she'd need to be much further away, and that would shot everything else to the sides of the trees. The final part is that I'm waiting on my other lenses for the body I used in this video, so all I had to hand was a 24-70! Hope that helps! 😀

Hello first of all awesome video. Second of all tomorrow I have my first gig and this is very helpful, but what do you use to edit. I hope we can get in touch as soon as possible and have a nice day! Nvr mind answered my question thank you so much for the helpful video! @That Dog Spot
Thanks for posting the video. Where was the location of the sun in this shot
Behind the trees, almost directly opposite me 👌
Just to clarify, the radial filter was for making changes to the dog's face? Or for everything but the face?
I'll take another look at the video and let you know 😊
What camera do you use? Also you are amazing and your dogs are super cute! Thanks for the help!
I use a Sony A7RIII but you could create these with any camera and a good prime lens. The kit isn't important, the settings and lens are 👌
That Dog Spot thank you 😊
Thank you.
as you asked so nicely i subbed
Yay! Welcome, thank you! 🙏
I am learning a lot from you and will be getting some shots of my dogs very soon
Your tip at the end though, practice practice practice!! Thank you for the pep talk 🤗
Hey hey, wide as in aperture, so low f-number :) The 105 macro will be awesome so give that a go!
My camera came with a prime lens that doesn't seem useful for doggos :(
Thanks for considering!
I assume thats an expensive body but I don't have the budget to match for a lens right now
Do you usually work on the background layer in photoshop?
We very rarely work on the original layer, we tend to duplicate this layer prior to editing 🙂
Great inspiring video.
The patching on the bogey, can’t it be done in LR, or is PS way better in cloning?
PS gives a far cleaner result but you could absolutely give it a shot in LR Jurgen!
Love the video! what camera/lens do you use?
Sony A7R3 and whatever lens suits the job at hand 💪
Hi,
When you switch to PS and save the picture and continue in Lightroom then it is not a raw file anymore right?
Thanks William!
Need to make that new brush for sharpening the eyes 📷
@wjbphotographyuk
Thank u!!!!!
Thank you 🙏 Hope it helped 😊
Very interesting video!! Thank you! I just have one question, why a 70mm and not a 35mm with a low f?
I only really shoot wide-angle outdoors with off-camera flash, so that's part of it. Another part of it is that the background has a lot of "stuff" in it outside the trees, so to get the same level of bokeh, she'd need to be much further away, and that would shot everything else to the sides of the trees. The final part is that I'm waiting on my other lenses for the body I used in this video, so all I had to hand was a 24-70! Hope that helps! 😀
You don't Always need to use f1.4 to f2.8. F4 or f5.6 can be usefull too to get the entire dog sharp and the background blurry.
Correct Johan, but only if you have the background distance and a decent focal length to match 👌
You forgot to change the profile setting to camera standard as you taught us in your other video😅
This is 2 years ago 🤣
@@ThatPhotographySpot Haha I know. Sorry, I wanted to show you I am being a good student who pays attention during your videos!!🤣
