She's saying it because the girls in the gym attacked Carrie, and that's her subtle way of acknowledging her bitterness about it. Sue's mom is telling her that she feels sorry for what happened to Carrie, but Margaret is unforgiving and says that line in order to confirm that.

I'm still confused and kind of questioning the point of the movie... All I understood is the teenager issues, religious-like.. things and a story with no sense or with no main point/theme. Chloe Moretz acting was a little disappointing in this movie, the dialogues were... not that captivating and even more exaggerating.
That’s because they updated the movie, whereas it’s so timeless you can read the book and not realize it was written in the 1960s - 70s. There’s also the fact that the book is just a bunch of documents assembled together with the narrative. For example, Carrie might have her period and then we get a news article about Margaret’s birth with Carrie.
I do like the book better, but there’s some stuff I like about the movie. Still, the book has Carrie be that fat, ugly girl, and nobody does anything about her and Margaret. She even wonders if after she graduates high school what’ll happen.
I prefer Julianne Moore over Piper Laurie. Moore just brought so much more to the character of Margaret White. Piper Laurie played it like a melodramatic soap opera.

When I saw this I thought “Maybe Carrie’s mom is hurting herself because she feels attraction to a beautiful woman being kind to her” like some sort of deterrent to homosexual thoughts and urges.

Why did carrie's mom hurt herself
She thinks prom is a sin, so she felt guilty about contributing to the "godless world' by making a prom dress, especially a red one (she thinks the color red is evil)
