  • Perfection is the name for this one. Evidently the owner just finished the restoration. Every detail is perfect...note the original wheel covers! This was certainly a high class, expensive sedan in its day..and a styling leader. You could almost feel like you were jetting into outer space with this one!

    We had a 59 Olds station wagon same color, i think they called dynamic 88, what a huge car it was

    Had a `60 Olds 98 about 37 years ago. A 4 door hardtop sedan with the flat roof. Also had working factory air.Needed paint and some reupholstering work, but it was
    clean and solid.Damn thing was stolen right in front of my house! Wish I still had it.Bought it from a mechanic at my local Texaco station for 250.00.

    @biglinc1 Thanks for the proper nomenclature! I remember the term "Holiday" from the original Olds hardtops...I guess they thought it was an apt name...and "holiday" certainly engenders pleasant memories and expectations! Very smart! :) Jack

    It's a beauty love the color combination. They need the bring back exciting colors again and make cars more distintive.

    Love that "Flat top" ... that wraparound rear window was huge! A beautiful car ... perfect.

      +DougCameraman Hey, Doug! That was a very "modern" look for me...light, airy, great visibility all around. Like some of the all glass facades of buildings of the period. Thanks! :) Jack

      That was the four-window four-door hardtop body style for 1959. There was also a six-window four-door hardtop body style on GM cars in 1959-60. The four-window style with the flat roof was rarer, but better looking, at least to me.

    My aunt Cappy, likely 60 years ago, told me that Buick did the basic design for '59 and the rest of General Motors was required to use the basic mold ... and those flat tops were sure a good design!

    • @coolrides
      @coolrides  4 года назад +1

      GM sure made a good job out of taking a basic design and making it appear quite different for their 5 car lines. They were able to design a "personality" for each of them...yet kept the economy of the same underpinnings. Thanks! :) Jack

    I did not care for these cars back in the day I preferred vehicles with wide c pillars. I greatly appreciate them now

      Hey, Larry! I think these cars were just bold enough to cause some not to like them...but as you say, as time passes, we get used to new concepts, and they can appear quite attractive! Thanks! :) Jack

    is It just me or in 59 the Impala, Fleetwood, Olds 88-98, Buick LeSabre and Invicta were all work of art as a matter of fact all the from 49,59,69,79... were nice after 79 they sorta took a dive.. lol maybe its just me

    I think you said it best, Jack 'Perfection' ... I can't top that description! This is just absolutely beautiful, every thing about it is just perfect, I love how far that rear wind screen wraps around :) And it's in the best possible colour combination there is, in my opinion! You really cannot beat the styling of the 1950's!

  • @coolrides

    Thanks for the reminder about celebrity endorsements! I have an ad in which Walt Disney is touting the virtues of his 1939 DeSoto! I particularly love the roof styling of this hardtop! Thanks! :) Jack

  • @coolrides

    Hey, Billy! I think what you saw in the mid 50's through 1960 really were expressions of automotive art...all very modernistic, and patterned after aircraft in design..complete with fins. That trend exhausted itself by 1960, and design became more practical, although you could still easily tell one make from another. Today, since they've settled on the "jelly bean" shape, it's increasingly more difficult to tell one car from another! Thanks! :) Jack

    @biglinc1 I think Lincoln at that point had the edge on prestiege...lots of cars in government service in Washington...visible symbols like that, Lincoln saw to it that their armored cars were available for lease...it's visible signals like that that mean a lot, methinks. Thanks! :) Jack

      Hey, Gene! No car surpassed these flat tops for all around visibility! Definitely a cool design, and the added A/C made it livable in the summer! Thanks! :) Jack

      Probably cost about $5200 MSRP when new. A sale price for a slightly used one went for about $4100.

    Hey Jack..the '59 Olds '98 is simply a knockout....it occurs to me, that because the '59 Caddy is and has become such an overwhelming icon, that the rest of the wonderful GM lineup from'59 tends to get overlooked...but this fine vid, makes it crystal clear that '59 Olds was quite "the piece of work" in its own right!!

    • @coolrides
      @coolrides  7 лет назад +1

      Hey, Daniel! I had a fried who bought one of these when just a few years old. It was really a fine car, smooth riding, and powerful. It certainly ranked up there in the GM stable! Thanks! :) Jack

  • @coolrides
    @coolrides  13 лет назад

    @drewerz01 Hey, Mike! Yeah, "perfection" is just right for this car! The four door hardtop had that type of wraparound windscreen...the two door hardtop had the usual sloping type. It certainly gave the car an airy, wide open appearance, and visibility for the driver was exceptional! The colors make the car pop..particularly as they are coordinated with the interior! Thanks! :) Jack

    @loufalce I'm really sorry to hear of your misfortune! A friend had a 59 Olds 88 hardtop..what a great cruiser!

    @biglinc1 Good point...and as the divisions lost their identity, it was the beginning of the end for several divisions. No need to buy an Olds if it has a Chevy 350! Thanks! :) Jack

  • @coolrides
    @coolrides  13 лет назад +1

    @biglinc1 That's funny...GM particularly had a thing about series names....Buick with the Greek classical Invicta and Electra, Olds with Regency...one might have made the retort that her car sounded like a hotel!! Then be prepared to run! LOL! Thanks! :) Jack

  • @coolrides
    @coolrides  13 лет назад +1

    @biglinc1 It's interesting how GM scrambled to get proper engines for their cars...and for so many years there was the pride in owning a Cadillac V8 which had better than expected fuel economy. You can see how the marque starts to fade as compromises, substitutions, and "economies" creep in. Thanks! :) Jack

      Jack R I just turned 59 and when I was a kid we had a 59 dynamic 88 wagon- I think they called it 'Fiesta'? Loved that speedometer, had the 371 engine, red and white, so much room in that car it was amazing. You know I love how the 59 4 door roof hangs over in the rear, they paid so much attention to styling in those days, all that chrome in and out, compared to new cars not the safest or the fastest but so much character in those days, each year completely different, 59 was a beautiful year for the Olds
      My Father had a 66 toronado, another classic- those old cars rode like you were sitting on a pillow

    @jojocats2 Hey, John! You can tell this restorer was meticulous in making sure every detail is perfect! The art of two tone color combinations has been lost..this was an example of it at its zenith! Thanks! :) Jack

  • @coolrides
    @coolrides  13 лет назад +1

    @biglinc1 Yes indeed...front wheel drive was not very popular with the Gray Panthers...and Ford still made rear wheel drive behemoths. There was that illusion that big meant safe...certainly mass is an aspect, but materials and engineering are very important. State troopers who had their Ford gas tanks explode on rear impact could testify about that one! Thanks! :) Jack

    @jferg7159 Hey, Joe! Thanks for the history on that! I think that along with Hydramatic was really the beginning of automating functions on the car. That dimming device certainly is useful...and I still can't get over occupants leaving the car and the headlights turning off by themselves. I soooo want to tell them they left their headlights on! Just call me "old fashioned"! Thanks! :) Jack

    VEJO OS CARROS AMERICANOS DOS ANOS 50, COMO VERDADEIRAS OBRAS DE ARTE SÔBRE RODAS ! ME IMPRESSIONAM MUITO AS LINHAS DAS CARROCERIAS, OS REQUINTES DO ACABAMENTO E OS CROMADOS
    QUE EMBELEZAM O CONJUNTO DA OBRA ! HAVIA NAQUELA ÉPOCA, UMA PREOCUPAÇÃO EM SE PRODUZIR
    AUTOMÓVEL COMO UM BEM DURÁVEL E BONITO, COM ARES DE NOBREZA ! HOJE, SE APLICAM NOS AUTOMÓVEIS TECNOLOGIAS VISANDO AS FACILIDADES DE COMUNICAÇÃO, DIRIGIBILIDADE, PRESERVAÇÃO DA VIDA E DO MEIO AMBIENTE, MAS SEM ATRATIVOS QUE NOS ENCHAM OS OLHOS ! (JORGE MOTA - SÃO PAULO)

      Eu definitivamente concordo com você... a ênfase mudou-se de obras de arte e design a engenharia de segurança e a incorporação de produtos eletrônicos como sendo essencial para a navegação e entretenimento. Assim, tem havido uma perda líquida de arte e expressão individual nos carros de hoje. Estou feliz que temos museus e mostras de carro velho para atualizar nosso senso de beleza automotiva! Obrigado! :) Jack

  • @coolrides

    @Sarcasticscum Hey, Nathan! Yes indeed, the function of that object is to dim or brighten the lights depending on oncoming traffic. GM used it on their premium cars at the time as an option...other car companies used it too. The problem is that it sometimes malfunctioned...the technology hadn't been ironed out...and note that it isn't offered as far as I know right now. I think it is difficult for the sensor to make fine distinctions. Thanks! :) Jack
