  • This is a story about loss. And, as is my custom, a rock.
    The trail is sometimes so beaten that there's nothing left, but if you ever get a chance to see Gozo, take it. I love Gozo. Just don't stress too much about seeing the Azure stump.

    Funny you mentioned the Monalisa ! I visited the Louvre once, as I was walking down the hallways enjoying the amazing number of great paintings done by the greatest masters, I swear to God there was a bunch of tourist walking quickly and were speaking loudly " where's the Monalisa, where's the Monalisa?" they completely ignored all the paintings on both sides of the hallway !!! They didn't stop to look at anything. As I got to the hall that has the Monalisa the entire crowd was cramped next to the painting. Yet I noticed on the opposite side a large wall size amaizing masterpiece that was again completely ignored by the crowd. Now I've heard and seen a lot about why we SHOULD be impressed by this painting, and I'm sure it is impressing. But as I am no professional artist I don't think I fully appreciate what the fuss is all about. But I'm pretty sure the rest of that crowd in the museum doesn't know either.

    • @iandalziel7405
      @iandalziel7405 4 года назад +1

      Totally on board with that!
      What I observed was that virtually none of the people scrummaging to get up close to the _Mona Lisa_ actually looked at it for long - if at all - they all had their backs to it and were taking selfies.
      More 'la Joke' than _La Joconde..._
      The other stand example f this was at the _Sagrada Famiilia_ in Barcelona - I thought the people were coming in adopting a devotional pose with their hands up by their faces, like praying mantises, then realised they were entering this amazing space and all they were seeing was the tiny amount mediated by their device screens.... sigh!

    6:30 Truer words...
    Thank you for a very thoughtful essay about rocks (but not just about rocks). You rock! (yeah, I said it)
    It's strange how we as a species develop attachments to the oddest things, and then feel tremendous loss when they're gone.
    In the end, it's not about replacing what is lost. It's acknowledging the absence and integrating it into the total life experience.
    If you truly care about someone or something, the loss will always be there.
    If it becomes overwhelming, it's a problem but I would prefer to care enough to feel the loss than not care at all.

    • @regular-joe
      @regular-joe 4 года назад +1

      "....the loss will always be there." Yes. Thank you for sharing your comment.
      You know, people don't prepare you for that, with all their "life goes on" and "it's time to move on" and such. Yes, we move on, but we don't leave behind the true losses. And when the loss sometimes overwhelms us, the hurt reminds us we're human. Thank you for your comment, and Rare Earth for this video.
      Edit: right now it hurts so much, I'm not sure I want to be human.

    Idea: a board game called "The Azure Window."
    The aim of the game is to convince people that your azure window is THE azure window.
    Basically, you take a map of Gozo, and miniature azure window statue thingies. On the first turn, a roll of the dice decides where your statue goes. Once your statue is placed, you read about the location from a booklet (part of the game) and argue from there why you get to win.

    I first visited Malta in March 2017, one week after it collapsed. I can't believe I just missed it.
    I had a great burger on Gozo though, so swings and roundabouts

    You highlighted the blindness to beauty which arrises from the persuit of prepercieved beauty very well indeed.
    And, if people go to Paris just to see the Mona Lisa, they are wasting their time. Ugly it is, worthy of adoration it is not.

    Me and my partner were traveling across America and stopped at a hotel in Twin Falls Idaho, later that day after a few drinks, we went for a walk and discovered the Twin Falls canyon and watched the sunset. We believed we stumbled upon it, we had no inclination to go or had any plans to actually to see anything the area had. We felt it was a surprise to experience such beauty. But now that I think of it, the town most certainly designed it so tourists are unconsciously guided toward the canyon at every possibility. We actually were looking for potatoes, but all we ever found were corn fields and a river at the bottom of a 100 ft deep canyon. 3 Stars

    that's a really interesting way to look at it. Dealing with loss is when we have built our own internal mental infrastructure around something and then that thing disappears

    The older I get, the more I understand that either I'm going to lose people and things that mean something to me - or, people are going to lose me, and those things will either end up with someone else, or in a garbage can. Loss in inevitable. Even rocks are impermanent.

    Definitely reminded me of the “most photographed barn in the world” from White Noise, where any significance of the actual thing has been lost to the fanfare surrounding it
