Actually the very definition of gods revolves around perfection. Gods are, or should I say were, the embodiment of perfection in the area they govern.
The idea was that in trying to reach the gods people would endeavor to perfect themselves in their day to day activities and strive to achieve a deeper understanding of their surrounding world.
I'm of course talking about the ancient religions of the Western, Middle-Eastern and Meso-American world which actually worshiped gods.
Japan is a different case, Shinto is an animist religion, the gods of Shintoism are more like nature spirits; more similar the elves of Germanic mythology than the gods of old.

      @@martialme84 well yes and no.
You're thinking of the late period of Hellenistic faith, and this makes sense since it's this time that is closer to us and most accessible, but that wasn't always the case.
We know this because we have accounts of ancient Greek philosophers criticizing Homer of humanizing the and predicting that this would lead to the downfall of Hellenistic faith. And while this anthropomorphization gave us some really memorable stories and myths which in turn popularizing Greek mythology, it also brought the gods into the human sphere and nullifying their role as moral signposts.
You can think of it as the ancient version of the davinci code becoming part of canon scripture, and as impossible as that may seem in today's wold we have to keep in mind that the ancient world was a far different place. With little access to written knowledge most traditions would be passed on orally and subject to extreme degradation over just a few generations. And if you think about the Greek world as a bastion of culture imagine that by the times of Plato and Aristotle it had become difficult to impossible to find most works of Pythagoras and Thales.
That's comparable to being unable to find the writings of Descartes and Kant today.

Here. in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, in the last month with a post tropical storm and a Nor'Easter, we've lost about 24 Elm trees in our Kings Square and the Loyalist Burial Ground in the center of the city, most of these were over 130 years old, donated by the City of Boston after our Great Fire of 1888. Now it comes to light that in the Norse Sagas of Leif Erikson, when they explored from Newfoundland they came to the Bay of Fundy, because at Lance Meadows, they found Butternut wood, there are no Butternut trees in Newfoundland, but there are along the Bay of Fundy, along with wild grapes and the Sagas talk of huge tides like you get in the Bay of Fundy. So maybe to replace those trees lost in storms the city should plant the endangered Butternut trees, since the woodland companies are spraying to kill off trees like the Butternut so they can plant fir trees for lumber and paper products. Even 24 trees is a start.

@@TheCriminalViolin A lot of people have Butternuts in their backyards and have offered the seeds to start some more trees, but like I stated the forestry companies and the provincial power company have a spray program using Glyposate, that likes plants and poisons all animals in the forest, it's so back the deer have moved into the populated areas and are being culled this year.

The history of silviculture in Japan is quite interesting. Kinda disappointed he didn't go into the deforeststion crisis of the Edo period, and the reaction being the creation of a new industry, silviculture. As well as the societal change that led to sustainable forestry practices, centuries before the industrial era made it a much more obvious problen.
Good video nonetheless but that footnote of history would have been a great addition to the topic imo.

Math: There are reportedly about three trillion trees on Earth. Typically, they live longer than 10 years and less than 1000 years, so let's say that a typical tree lives for about 100 years. So the daily turnover has to be about 3 trillion divided by 100 years (36500 days) = 80 million trees per day. That's about 80 million old tress dying, and about 80 million new trees starting out, every day. So planting 20 million trees is what nature does before you've woken up in the morning. And if humans are cutting down 20M trees per day, another 60M trees per day are falling over and rotting (which may be a very good thing, diversity versus methane). All numbers are approximate.
I took a bag of acorns and tossed them around our (multi-acre) yard. About 300 trees in 30 minutes. Another bag of acorns is waiting.

      300 acorns =/= 300 trees though

By your math the forest should be growing- not shrinking. I think you vastly underestimate the life cycle time of the northern boreal forests.
We can see clearly from satellite images that the forests are shrinking. Not to mention less breeding trees = less new trees. You might want to study population ecology a little more

All the trees in my county, the wine county of California, are burning at the moment. Vineyards, forest and parks have being lost over the past couple nights.
Edit: and now I am having to evacuate my home.
Despite this particular fire being suspected of starting from arson hopefully the team trees movement can will people into combating climate change, but really we all need to answer the call to help prevent wild devastations to our neighbors. Make that one day that wouldn't have happened otherwise happen.

This video is amazing! I lived on Okinawa for 2 years but I never really heard about this banyan tree or fart hating god although I have seen this the picture. I wonder what the shrine/temple is called during 3:00-4:27. This video brought back so many good memories of living there though. Thank you for making this I'm going to go donate to teamtrees.org.

Just wondering, have you heard of 'Towers of silence', or Dakhma of the Zoroastrian religeon? Particually the one in mumbai, and what affect the heavily decreasing vulture population? Somthing intresting I thought I'd put out there.

What a blessing it is for Mr. Beast and all the creators rallying under his cause to allow us broke regular joes a chance to make such a difference in the world for so little. I may be broke but even I know 1 tree is more valuable than me. Dropping a fiver for 5 trees is a no brainer!
