The 2024 Silverado EV Is Solid, Expensive, and Totally Cool | Silverado EV Review

  • Chevy says the future of the Silverado is electric and I [Alex] flew to Michigan to see what that means for one of the best selling trucks in America. Top line? What it means is a more expensive truck with unique features found nowhere else and plenty of unanswered questions. Let's dive in.
    What is it? The 2024 Silverado EV is NOT a converted Silverado like we see in the F-150 and upcoming RAM BEV. Instead, this is a ground up clean-sheet 21st century pickup truck design. Think of it as a re-imagining of what a truck could/should be. Yes, it's a unibody truck. No, that's not a problem. The unified battery-body-structure of the truck yields improved rigidity, more stable towing, and (likely) improved off-road capability in the upcoming off-road versions. This is distinctly different form the Ford and RAM that use the same body mated to a new EV-specific frame.
    Chevy has opted not to disclose the battery capacity, but its likely the same 212 kWh battery that the Hummer truck uses, but the Silverado is much, much more efficient. Chevy says that the 24-module versions will be EPA rated for 450 miles, and although we don't have the final numbers, highway range is likely to be over 400 miles. This is thanks to better aero and the bigger battery vs the Lightning.
    Power for the work truck version will come from de-rated motors vs the consumer versions, although 510 HP and 615 lb-ft is still pretty healthy. Towing capacity has been revised up to 10,000 lbs of SAE certified towing (up from 8,000).
    Speaking of power, you can off-board 10.2 kW of 120/240V AC power from the Silverado via the onboard outlets and the J1772 (charge connector) breakout box. Looking for an auto-house backup solution? Chevy doesn't have an answer yet.
    Curb weight? A whopping 8,532 pounds. Ouch. Remember that the RST will have more creature comforts and the mid-gate option which should bump weight close to 9,000 lbs.
    Sooo, how much will it cost? Well, at the start $77,990 plus destination will get fleet customers the WT trim with the big battery. Not a fleet customer? Too bad, you can't buy one. A fully-loaded RST First Edition will be $105,000. Ouch. How about the smaller battery (~167 kWh) work truck version? Only a small discount happens there putting it at $72,905.
    What does that mean for the all-electric future of the Silverado? Likely higher MSRPs all around. The base model will likely start around $55,000+. What do you think? Are you team Lightning? Silverado? RAM? Cybertruck?

      these are essentially work vehicles, not pavement princesses. and thats one expensive work truck....a fleet can buy 2 work trucks for the price of one of these. the charging cost vs fueling wont be significant enough to justify the lack of ability for many.
      the cost to charge this thing assuming 0-100 percent will range from $40-60
      refueling a gas truck with a 30 gallon tank from empty to full will range from 90-110
      assume 1 fill up/charge per week, that would be about $2600 in gas annually.
      assuming they keep it for 5 years thats about 13k in fuel, vs $6500 in electric.
      the EV truck will not save anyone money and have far less ability over a traditional pickup. also, since that bed is structural vs a frame based bolt on, now repairs can be more too.

      It is very expensive, although several other ICE trucks reach this price or more. However, because of such a large battery, this one can power your full house for about a week, or for a about 3 weeks if you only use the essentials like your refrigerator, lights, TV, PC/laptop, etc. but not such things as 5 ton air-conditioners. So that's something to keep in mind.
      And I would imagine that those that use it for business that use a lot of electricity on off-sites, this might be perfect for them. No more generators needed or buying of the fuels needed for them, not to mention none of the the smell and noises from them.

    I like the idea of the mid gate and I think this is a good looking vehicle. It has great specs but I’m wondering at the practicality of it when it needs such a larger battery to achieve them. If I wanted to tow I think I’d just stick with gas or diesel but other than that I think this would be a great truck if you can afford the consumer version. I’ve been wondering if a plug-in hybrid truck might make more sense for towing. You could drive electric most of the time and then have gas for when you tow. I’m a little surprised that so many people are aghast at the price. I met a construction worker the other day who had bought a model 3 performance because he got sick of paying for the fuel in his $80,000 Ram pick up. Obviously that was top of the line pickup, but this is new cutting edge technology.

    I have a pre-order in on the Silverado. One of the main reasons I put an order in on it was the interior space, styling, towing capacity and potential range. However, at $80K and above, I'm not likely to make a final purchase when it becomes available. I'm onboard with a $50-55K price tag, but they better get the range up to at least 350 miles plus or I'll look elsewhere. A 2020 Tesla Model X will get 325 miles and I can get one of those in the $40K range - and it tows 5000 pounds. So, if you don't need the pickup bed ...........................

    Nice to hear about the packaging being much improved for front and rear legroom and storage. This is what EV's do far above gas engine packages and an area that GM hasn't been excellent at compared to Ford and Ram. GM is doing this right and could be class leading given the wheelbase. Getting the bed length right and an Avalanche style mid-gate is the right approach. Not happy about all the grey interior bits in this vehicle. It's still 1500 lbs lighter then the Hummer. GM HAS TO GET THIS VEHICLE RIGHT! IT'S THEIR FINANCIAL FUTURE! This will be the one that goes against Tesla's Cybertruck. The new kid versus established OEM truck knowledge and market? Room for both? We'll see.

    Until there is a far more significant charging network, range baby, range. For me having a 400 mile range is a great feature to have and especially when towing. I saw a video of a Rivian towing a mustang on a trailer and they had to stop every 100 miles, which is ridiculous. So far it looks like a much better vehicle than the Ford Lightning.

    • @michaelramsey82
      @michaelramsey82 11 месяцев назад

      I think the eventual solution to the towing range problem will be motorized trailers. Give the trailer its own battery pack and motor, and have a universal connector you can plug into the truck that sends the throttle signal to the trailer so it can pull its own weight in sync with the truck. That way, the truck will still have its full range, and might even gain range if the trailer's load is light.

    CAPEX is high but work trucks tend to have very high utilization which make the OPEX savings - both electric vs. gasoline and maintenance - rack up quicker.
    Figure 25k mi/yr, 25 mpg, gas at $3/gal is $30k in gas alone over 10 years. EVs are usually 1/3 the cost of electricity which is $20k savings alone, before considering far lower maintenance costs.
    Obviously that’s not time adjusted and at best breaks even in this example, but the point is many EVs can justify their higher CAPEX.
    Oh yah, and you’re not destroying the planet we live on, so there’s that too.

  • @michaelramsey82
    @michaelramsey82 11 месяцев назад +3

    I'm liking this truck a lot more than I expected to. It is expensive, but given the absolutely humungous battery, that's understandable. The specs are good, the range is really impressive, and I really like the styling, which I haven't been able to say about a GM truck in a very long time. I do hope there's a stripped-down, work-truck-like model available to the consumer market at some point. Chevy seems to be on a roll lately with the new EVs they're announcing - this, the Blazer EV, and the Equinox EV.

    Everybody knows that you can get more miles if you increase the battery size, so, to quote Ted Lasso, "big whoop" on the range. On the other hand, I did reserve the cheapest version with 250 miles, but mostly for in town/around home work stuff, so I don't expect a lot of fast charging and/or quickness out of it. Too bad about the price, I might cancel if it goes significantly up. If it's still under 50k... ehh, we'll see. I said it then, and it was confirmed since, the F150 Litghning was too rushed to the market. That being said, I would have liked to get me one of them 40k versions (the Pro if I'm not mistaken), but I didn't move fast enough. That's when I made the reservation for the Silverado EV.
    In any case, I'm still waiting on the Cybertruck. Not for the Ed Sheeran reason ("The Shape of You") but more for price/performance reasons, see how it stands against the legacy trucks in this respect.

    Let’s hook up a cattle trailer full of cattle and see if it will make it to market and back. Gotta love a work truck that takes hours to recharge. EV’s are shoved down our throats and they are expensive, the mining of materials for batteries is environmentally destructive, recharging is a constant concern and on a recent test, an EV truck towed a boat 60 miles on a full charge. Sure, get me one. 😆 I’ll take my 5 minute fill up and not worry about my vehicle spontaneously combusting at 2 in the morning.

    I appreciate that Chevy put this out there, but the Avalanche "wing" thing and the overall exterior looks just kill it for me. Really unattractive truck. The unibody idea is a good one, especially given the size of the interior cabin and the amount of battery power they were able to get into it. Then there's the homely (trying not to say fugly) interior. And then they want $80K for the work version? Solid pass. In fact, I've forgotten it exists already. The Lightning was overpriced as well, but so are most trucks nowadays. And as long as people are dumb enough to keep buying them at those prices, the greedflation will continue. Maybe Ram's EV pickup (Revolution, I think they're calling it?) will be better design-wise, but I suspect the price will be just as stupid. I drive a Ram and I'd love to get into a large EV, but I'm not going to mortgage my house to do it.
