My dad worked for Grumman aeronautics and turned down a free one from one of their CEO's and regretted it from the time he turned it down. One of the many things I learned from my father was if you want it grab it. Your channel has brought back a lot of fantastic memories I was privileged to share with my hero, my father. Thank you for what you do you are one of the best.
I do a lot of wilderness canoe tripping and did two trips of 12 and 17 days with just the canoe and tarp.i found the hassle to be that every night you had to get the canoe up into a camp spot and make a new set up depending on what you had to work with.what I came up with was setting the end up off the ground and onto a stump of log that was at least 3 feet off the ground and then putting a big tarp over the whole thing.you have a solid roof and the seats provide a dry place to put things.
Nice Canoe, looks like an old Sears or Feather lite. Canoe camping is great, it's nice to be able to bring out your comfort items! I enjoyed your video, thanks for sharing.
Good canoe, if your going to be going down rivers, I strongly suggest a canoe emergency repair kit. A couple coke cans and a quart size can of roof repair (roofing tar) and a plastic spatula. With the tar you can repair any cracks or punctures even if the boat is still wet. Hopefully you won't ever need it, but its good to have.
I’m planning on getting a canoe or kayak this year myself, and love the shelter tips! Keep the info coming especially for us new to the canoe and kayak world.
Hennessey hammocks are perfect for canoeing . Use your tarp for a loafing area shelter. It's a win win setup your not sleeping on the ground and you don't have to set out weather situations in a cramped shelter that you can only lay down in. And yes you can winter camp in a hammock quite comfortably.
It's awesome that you got a canoe, I just got my first one this year. It was a dream of my fathers he passed away in sept. So I'm doing it for him. Thankfullly I get help along the way from getting to watch your videos thanks and can't wait for the maiden voyage.
Shane McCauley - Sorry to hear about your Dad. Glad you got one to remember him by. A buddy of mine from college and I did a two day trip last spring in honor of his dad who passed 2 yrs ago.
Glad you were able to get a canoe, Dan. Can't wait to see your adventures with it. I almost bought one last year. It was a little to rough for my liking though. I still hope to get a nice use one. - Jeremy
Another way I’ve seen emergency shelters made with canoes is to lash the paddles in an “x” and the place one end of the canoe over the “X” with the other side resting in the ground. Then throw the tarp over that for more height and space. (Three minutes with a Maine guide shows it well)
Oops! Think my finger snap joke got bounced. Sorry. No disrespect ever intended. LOVE your channel! Love to see some more canoe/bushcraft stuff! Thanks for what you do! PS...just ordered your gum blanket. Can’t wait! Stay in the woods!
hiking is my favorite thing, but canoeing is a close second. having your own boat changes everything. looking forward to seeing what videos you come up with using the canoe.
I canoe at Kinzua reservoir, and up and down the Allegheny river; strongly recommend it, and it's in PA. This shelter would have been handy to know the last time I was up there and severe thunderstorms and isolated tornados rolled up!
Careful with using the canoe as a shelter. A sprinkler fitter that I used to work with died from carbon monoxide poisoning while sheltering in a canoe. He had it propped up on it's side, using it as a reflector for the fire, and slept beside it. Never woke up. Game Warden or coroner guessed that a weird convection current formed and asphyxiated him. RIP Ricky!
It’s good to start with an inexpensive, used canoe. You learn as you play, and it didn’t take a lot of money. It’s also good to start with an aluminum canoe. From there, EVERY other canoe you get will be better. Aluminum canoes are the heaviest, noisiest barge out there . Well, actually, a metal washtub would be worse. But only a little worse.
I love canoeing!! Did a two day trip on Pine Creek in the PA Grand Canyon last year. Camped on State Forest ground and used a hammock, but sleeping under the boat with a tarp staked over was a backup plan. Let me know if you want to take a trip together this year, Dan. Canoeing with Coalcracker.... could be a new series!
another set up : place your center stake 5 feet from you up turned canoe, use a tape measure from the stake to your boat and around the bottom, then back to your stake. then you get a tarp that is at least that long and 1 foot longer than your boat. to use, lay the tarp out flat, put your boat gunnels just past the center line, prop your boat up on edge and wrap over the bottom the rest of the tarp. stake down with the first edge. you will have about 6 inches on each end, fold the bottom up and the top down over it , voila, a tent that will keep out the wind and rain, to enter you can raise the center on a longer stake and make a door. you are out of the mud and laying on the tarp with a hard shelter into the wind, make sure you place it so that the open end is slightly down hill and the water will go around you
i get the simplicity thing but, it's a canoe. i pack a tent in mine. and a tarp to stretch over the whole shooting match. i think mine claims a 750 weight limit. i could pack the making of a cabin in mine.
Love canoeing on the upper Delaware river it’s amazing up there not sure where you are in Pennsylvania. I’ve bine do a trip every year for the last 28 years wow time fly’s have fun be safe water prof river maps are a must look them up
HBF Outdoors - Wonderful canoeing along the "J"! I was supposed to do a 2-day trip on it last spring finishing around Muskrat Springs, but it got blown out with spring flooding and we did Pine Creek instead.
What about a kayak it's a one-person kayak but a person that is 6 foot tall in least 3 foot and width that's with arms at the side can crawl into with a sleeping bag around them cover the single hole and have a comfortable sleep with rolling and turning around inside the kayak so that means it has to be a little wider and 4 comfort in a sleeping bag in the kayak you put a rain skirt or a tarp over that one hole and you have a waterproof rainproof shelter that's a hard shell shelter no kayak they have will allow a person to sleep in the thing in a canoe you could sleep in it but you have a larger space and you're not covered as much as you would be in a kayak with one hole to cover for rain weather protection
Coalcracker Bushcraft - For $60 you can't really even be upset if it leaks like a sieve! You could probably get close to $60 in scrap value if it's aluminum.
My friends and I did canoe camping for awhile. Bringing the cast iron skillet was a nice bonus. Enjoy. Cheers!

I've had a Grummen lake style canoe for 30 years, it's awesome. My folks bought it for my as a teenager. My daughter fishes out of it now.

Good stuff Dan. I also started canoeing last summer . Lots of fun
That’s a very cool setup! Nice thinking 😁
Hey i'm a big canoe enthusiast. Please do more canoe videos. This one is great and i'm sure to use it! Thanks!
I’m planning on getting a canoe or kayak this year myself, and love the shelter tips! Keep the info coming especially for us new to the canoe and kayak world.
I used to do alot of canoeing but never got chance for many overnights. Just the odd temp shelter from the rain/cold. Hope you have an awesome trip

The famous canoe snap, brilliant and so funny!! Loving this channel and so glad I found it!!

Looking forward to your canoe tips....wait, I'm not hoping you tip your canoe! lol Like the tarp shelter on this video, really expands usage!

Very cool shelter Dan...
Looks good. See you on the Susquehanna.

I must be doing it wrong I watched the vid over and over and still I can't get one to appear. ☹☹☹
Excited to see your canoe trips. I'm hoping to go on one myself this summer. Stay safe!
Another home run! Can't wait for the maiden voyage!!
That first voyage is going to be great to watch! Cool fort Dan
Now you’re talking!!! You will love it. Can’t wait for a coalcracker canoe video!!!
Welcome to the canoe community. The best way to travel.
Look forward to the maiden voyage my friend.
Awesome tips. Can't wait to try in on my solo trip in Algonquin park
Now you're ready for Algonquin Provincial Park. Get up there, you'll love it. Some portage required but it's totally worth it.
Never sleep inside your canoe if you wake up in the dark it’s freaky. Thanks great job 🇨🇦👍
Great idea thanks 👍🏻

I will use this in summer! Thanks for that!
Canoe paddles make good tarp poles too.

Yah were thinking used boating this year as well. Go figure lolol blessings 😇🇺🇸
That is a great idea!
Great video!

Awesome! Next should be a hand made canoe dollie!
Don't forget a life vest! Stay safe ATB. Nigel
Ive got some great places to canoe and camp out my way along the Juniata.
HBF Outdoors - Wonderful canoeing along the "J"! I was supposed to do a 2-day trip on it last spring finishing around Muskrat Springs, but it got blown out with spring flooding and we did Pine Creek instead.
I like it! Where do you get your tarp from?
Tentsmiths
Thanks, brother!
Goed bedacht 1-Boot als Shelter super video
Dan, with that shelter now, you can take the wife and canoe-dle!

Haha! Awesome! :)
Why not a two or three person backpacking tent from REI?
love it!!!!!
What do you treat your tarp with?
Cool!
Excellent
PLEASE, please beware flash floods (shelter too close to water path). Seems a family dies every year or so in this tri-state area
i like this intro a lot/
Very nice. I'm planning a canoe trip this year myself on the Lehigh river & the area (Pohopoco creek, Beltzville lake, etc). Check it out if you can.
My thumb and middle finger are raw!
What model and material is the canoe?
Fiberglass and it’s an old sears robuck
Dang right you might find some good water to trap and fish
Dan, love your vids, but its not nice to lie to everyone... Snapped my fingers and still no canoe!!!
hmm...you need to make more canoe videos.
Nothing tips over in the water any easier than a canoe.
Taut- no taunting nanananabooboo pull it taut
Haha.... Yes I love the videos, but saying taunt in place of taut is one that he uses a lot.
Nice canoe until you have to portage it alone. It looks pretty heavy.
What do ya want for $60
Coalcracker Bushcraft - For $60 you can't really even be upset if it leaks like a sieve! You could probably get close to $60 in scrap value if it's aluminum.
99.9% of the time im on the water, im in a kayak, not much room for shelter there
cant wait for the nonsense to ensue.
