  • In this short video, see how Kate coaches Joe following his disastrous presentation to the CEO. Kate uses the GROW model to help Joe accept that he needs to change the content of his presentation, asking neutral questions at each stage to help him find a better presentation approach. The video should be shown after my other Powtoon 'Coaching and the GROW Model'.
I am deeply grateful to Genevieve Courtney of GC Corporate Learning Solutions for providing the Clip Script below for this video, so that it can be sent to vision-impaired or blind people, so they can read it with their Jaws reader while the others watch it.
Clip Title: Watch the GROW model in action
There are three characters in this clip:
Team member is Joe. Joe’s manager is Kate. Kate’s manager is Pete.
    Scene one:
Kate and Pete meet in Pete’s office. Kate wants to talk to Pete about helping Joe with a presentation he delivered to the female CEO this morning that didn’t go well, as she switched off due to too much detail and too many slides.
Kate says: Hi Pete. I was just trying to think how I can help Joe with his presentation.
Pete replies: Have you thought about the GROW model? Just remember to:
Agree a Goal, for example, i.e., what does a successful presentation look like?
Then, explore the Reality, i.e., what happened?
Next, explore the Options, i.e., what might be more successful next time?
Then, commit to the Way Forward, i.e., what are the first steps to success?
    Scene two:
Kate enters Joes office. He is sitting at his desk and looks disheartened following his presentation
Kate says: Hi Joe. Are you okay?
Joe replies: No. You saw my presentation this morning. What am I doing wrong? She switched off as soon as I started.
We see an image of Joe from this morning’s presentation. He is standing in front of a slide show presenting and the CEO appears to be bored, almost asleep.
Kate explores Goal from GROW with Joe:
Kate asks: Joe, what do you think the CEO is looking for from your presentation?
Joe replies: She needs to know how my project is going. An overview.
Kate asks: So what’s your presentation goal?
Joes replies: Give her what she needs to keep the shareholders happy.
Next, Kate explores Reality with Joe:
Kate asks: How many slides had you prepared this morning?
Joes replies: About 20 or so.
    Kate asks: So what happened?
Joes replies: She cut me off and told me to GET ON WITH IT!
We see an image of Joe from this morning’s presentation. Joe is presenting and the CEO looks inpatient and frustrated with Joe.
Kate asks: What does the CEO most want to know?
Joes replies: Is the budget on time? Are we on budget?
Kate asks: Did you tell her that?
Joes replies: I suppose not, I got lost in all the project detail.
Next, Kate explores Options with Joe:
Kate asks: So what presentation did she want you to give?
Joes replies: Hmm. Shorter. Less detail, I guess.
    Kate asks: How many slides?
Joes replies: 5 or 6 slides.
Kate asks: And if she wanted more detail, what would she do?
Joes replies: You’re right - She’d soon ask!
Next, Kate explores Way forward with Joe:
Kate asks: So, how do you feel now?
Joes replies: Hey, that’s been so helpful! I need to work on this before next week’s presentation.
Kate asks: And what will your first step be?
Joes replies: First decide what she really wants to know. What her big takeaway has to be.
Kate asks: Any help you need from me?
Joes replies: I’ll email the slides over to you for feedback.
    Kate asks: Feeling better?
Joes replies: Much better Kate. Thanks.
    Scene three:
Kate meets with her manager Pete for a one to one.
Pete says: Just heard that Joe’s presentation went down well this morning.
Kate replies: Yeah, so well he was a hard act to follow.
Pete says: The GROW model is such a great way to coach people.
The clip ends with a summary slide of the GROW stages and corresponding questions:
    - Agree a Goal, for example, i.e., what does a successful presentation look like?
    - Explore the Reality, i.e., what happened?
    - Explore the Options, i.e., what might be more successful next time?
    - Commit to the Way Forward, i.e., what are the first steps to success?
