Sam Alexander also i should add that the mbp is a bit out of my budget, so it’ll require more time to get (i dont have studies now though) and i’m looking for a laptop that’ll last me at least 5 years

Great review. I love this machine. The form factor is ideal. What you said is key: you take it to places you never thought you would take a computer because its as portable as a tablet. The people who claim "get yourself a macbook air its only a little bit bigger and more heavy" dont understand the magic of the macbook 12 size.
Yeah i agree, i had no idea how just being a few lbs lighter than your average laptop would make it feel so much more portable. The size is something special
I had 2015 Macbook 12in for years and the battery swelled. An attempt to fix it myself rendered more internal problems and I had to give it away. Now I miss it very much and are looking into 2017 version due to a fond memory.
I have had this computer for almost 3 years now and there are things that I love and things I really don't love about it. I LOVE the build quality and portability of this machine. It feels really solid and well built. This laptop is super sexy; I wish I bought it in Gold. I'm shocked at how good the screen is, and the trackpad is a BOSS. I thought that the speed of the machine would be an issue, but surprisingly, it isn't. I don't do much in the way of photo or video editing so I don't find myself pushing the machine too hard, but overall, especially considering its portability, there's not much I can complain about. The audio and overall battery life have surpassed my expectations. That said, having to use this computer to video conference has really exposed some flaws for me. First off, DO NOT USE CHROME on this machine. The computer overheats to the point where it will literally shut off the webcam and Wi-Fi to cool it down. Things are better when using Safari, but I don't particularly care for Safari, and considering the need to able to video conference nowadays, this basically makes this computer useless for serious work. As a follow up to what I just posted, the Wi-Fi is alright at best and has a tendency to drop out. Don't know if that has to do with my experience using Chrome, but it has really shaken my confidence in terms of a long term solution for my computing needs. The keyboard is...well...I have a love/hate relationship with it. The dimensions of the keyboard fit the chassis perfectly. I have not had issues with fatigue while typing on this keyboard. That said, while I don't think it is as bad as most people have made it out to be, I have had instances where keys decide that they don't want to respond. Thankfully, I haven't had the issue lately, but when the issue does comes up, it is utterly infuriating. The battery life is still pretty good, but the machine is telling me that I should get service on the battery (I blame Chrome). I don't really intend on dropping another $200 on replacing the battery at this point. Unfortunately, I'm more inclined to sell/trade this machine for an iPad Pro to use as my preferred mobile computing device. Ultimately, the pros outweigh the cons and I do adore this computer, but realistically, it's more of a really awesome toy as opposed to a laptop that one should rely on to get serious work done with. When this computer was released, it was so far ahead of its time, and in many ways, it is still far superior to other options in this size category. If Apple would re-release this computer as it makes the transition to ARM, I would seriously consider purchasing an updated model, especially if they incorporate the new Magic Keyboard, upgrade the webcam, and consider throwing in a second Thunderbolt port. 7/10
Yeah the build quality is next level, the screen and trackpad are great. And I completely agree, if they made the same computer with ARM, it would be awesome. Especially if they added some extras
May I ask what was the amount of ram on this computer? And when was it released, just asking cause I ordered up a 2017 model with 16 gb of ram with an i5 core.
Excellent review. I have the 2017 as well and have not had a problem with it. I use it everyday. No fan noise (m3 CPU) and it will do video editing, but not intense video editing.
Yep, I too have the 2017 12’ MacBook and I never had an issue with it. I bought it strictly for portability and it served its purpose. I have a MacBook Air for my main computer so it was more powerful.
Hey, I had thought the exact same thing, that it would have been better if there were another USB-C port on the right instead of the 3.5mm port. I have a laptop with the 3.5mm port, and I have not used it for 4 years. For some reason, RUclips tech reviewers never shut up about 3.5 if a device does not have it, but since USB-C to 3.5 adapter is so cheap and small, I don't understand why they think it is such a big problem to use it.
the only reason why im looking into this computer is because my mom likes smaller devices- like she loves her iPad mini and loves the size of her 2020 iPhone se- so I think this computer will be the perfect size for her and side car would be great too because she has a iPad mini 5th gen- kinda skeptical about the battery and the keyboard though-
Went the same route and got a similar deal. For coding until I decide if I can go completely mobile with iPad Pro 12.9" only without feeling the need to have a laptop tag along in my backpack.
Love this video, about to pick one of these up today! Fun fact though, in the 12in MacBook the battery is actually a part of the bottom case, not the top case with keyboard, so having the keyboard replaced under the quality program would not get you a new battery.
@@SamAlexanderRUclips I’m excited to start using it! It’s being sent out for repair for the screen de lamination and the keyboard service program, so hopefully it’ll be almost new when it comes back!
I have the 2017 MacBook too. Bought it after they were discontinued, which was such a bummer because i loved this product line and it’s fan-less design. My two main gripes are the battery life and the bezels too. But both are fine, just not quite as good as other macs. Still beats the Surface Go line though 😆 Fingers crossed for the updated ARM version in the next few years, with maybe a 12.5” display! Think the single USB port cursed this thing a bit, and lots of people couldn’t see past that. I used it for Uni as secondary computer to my main Mac, which i think is exactly what it was meant for. Thanks for uploading
Yeah dude i agree, the bezels and battery aren’t great. Everything else is awesome. If this comes out with an ARM chip and thin bezels so same size body but bigger screen, that would be such a good laptop. Yeah i dont think the single USB C is even that big of a deal, hasn’t been a problem for me. If you have one dongle, then you have all the ports you need.
since you are/were a uni student, you probably used a lot of word and excel judging from my experience. Do you believe a 2017 i5 8gb ram mac12 can handle ms office apps and be snappy? People keep saying it is slow, but i dont understand if it is "slow-for-video-editing" or "slow-for-basic-productivity" which i need it for..
Dennis K yeah thats a great question, i have used it for excel and word and it feels totally snappy. I haven’t done HUGE projects in excel, that might be an issue, but with all the excel stuff I do which is like, a few hundred columns and a few pages, it works really well, no slow downs at all. And i know, slow is such a relative term, it depends entirely on how you use the computer. As far as my use, its totally snappy and not slow at all.
Can you edit 4k videos or 1080p smoothly in this machine? Im planning on buying a budget macbook for design school but im not sure which one should i get
@@tobiou_ For editing videos for fun yes, but for serious work or school an older MacBook Pro or decent gaming PC laptop at the same price would be better suited.
@@tobiou_ as long as you're using final cut pro, the editing is very smooth with 1080p, however with 4k you can get some slow downs. if you're going to be editing 4k regularly, i would recommend getting a more powerful machine like a macbook pro
I didn’t realize they were still selling them. They are great for portability which is why I bought mines back when. The one port didn’t even bother me. I still have mines and I never experienced problems with the keyboard at all.
Jaymee Fletcher yeah i like the keyboard way more than i thought i would! If you’re comfortable with it, I’d check out EBAY because you can get some better prices than at apples refurbished. There’s more risk involved, so you have to weight that. Anyways, thanks for watching!
Sam Alexander yeah I always go apple referbished because they always give you new case and keyboard it’s the insides that are “old” or whatever you want to call it. So it will be like new an they have an easy 14 day return if I change my mind. Great video I dunno why you don’t have more subs 🤷♂️
Jaymee Fletcher yeah thats true, you’re getting a basically brand new device with a warranty, and having a warranty can give you that peace of mind. Hey thank you so much! I really appreciate it
Excellent review. I miss this computer. I had one and traded it in for an M1 MacBook Air 13”. But it’s not the same, just not as portable. I really miss being able to take the 12” everywhere and code anywhere. Hopefully Apple releases an M-series 12” at some point. I would buy that in a heartbeat.
If they made a new MacBook 12 inch they should have new arm chip thinner bezels and new keyboard and new better display then it would be perfect and 8GB OF RAM and 2 thunderbolt cables
i completely agree and i would totally buy it except that i need a minimum of 16 gigs of ram. when i bought my 12" macbook i thought 8 gigs would be enough, but im maxing it out constantly while im coding so i need 16.
So is it good for like Photoshop/video editing? Also you said you done some light gaming on it, how was that? And what games were you playing? Great review!
ToonBible I didn’t try any photoshop, but i imagine if it can video edit, it can photo edit. It works pretty well in Final Cut Pro, but i didn’t try in premiere. I played a few blizzard games like heroes of the storm and Starcraft 2, and it wasn’t really playable in my opinion. Something like Dota 2 or League of legends might work though, but it would be on all low settings
Hi Sam! Great review! I’m thinking to change my MBP 15 inch mid 2015 base model per MacBook 12 2017 i7 16 Gb and 512 SSD. Do you recommend me this change? I need more portability but maybe I lose a lot of power. Thanks 😊
How the next 12" Macbook should be like: 1) A12X or better, A12Z. Please keep the prices low.. 2) Smaller bezels 3) 2x USB-C ports 4) 1080p webcam 5) Magic Keyboard
Anandu Ls that would be a great computer in my book, top notch 😎Maybe try to fix the reliability issues on the butterfly keyboard? That being said, i haven’t had any problems with it yet.
MATVLOGS I’m hoping it will be, and i thought that before, but after apples new announcement, I’m thinking it might actually start with the iMac? It doesnt make a ton of sense to me, but it could be. What do you think?
Sam Alexander it would make sense to start with the smaller imac but i think the 12 inch macbook is a better place to start because the users of these type of laptops dont use them in really heavy workloads, you know to test waters with users
MATVLOGS i think the 12” macbook would be better for arm too, but I’m not sure what they’re gonna release. I’m excited to see how beastly these apple processors can be when they have an actual fan cooling system, like in the iMac
I want this one cause I can just put it on my bag, I love everything that’s portable. I hate those heavy stuff that’s always such a pain to go from here to there... I am kind of wishing am ARM 12” Mac.
Great review and now i am considering buying one, but i think that it would be better to wait for the rumoured 12" ARM-Based MacBook. If Apple put a bigger display (for reducing the bezels, not the size of the machine) and a A12Z chip, it would go from incredible to incredible². Also, +1 sub.
Yeah I’m really excited for the ARM version of this macbook, i hope hope hope apple makes it. It would be an awesome computer. And yeah, you nailed it, those are the things apple needs to fix and then it would be the perfect laptop for this form factor
Jizelle Barragan I’m hoping we see a new 12” before the end of the year, but their ARM computer they’re releasing doesnt have to be a 12”, could be a iMac or a MacBook Air or something. We’ll see

well it depends on the spec, but for the bottom tier, core m3, 8 gb of ram, and 256 gigs of storage, which is my exact spec, I spent 500$. I considered that a good deal at the time, so something around that. it was also in excellent condition, which is something to check if you're buying used.
Hi Sam, you mentioned that under the keyboard replacement programme, the top deck gets replaced; which means they also replace your battery? I did some research on this and as far as I am aware the batteries are glued to the bottom deck so replacing the keyboard or whole upper deck would not result in having to replace the battery. So I guess I wanted to hear from yourself if the battery does or does not get replaced in the keyboard replacement programme for these 12" Macbooks?

How does the MacOS Big Sur update work with the MacBook 12 inch 2017? Does the update cause any problems? I’m asking because I’ve got the same MacBook but apprehensive to update from Sierra to Big Sur. Thanks
ive used it a BUNCH on facetime and zoom and such throughout the last few months, and it works really well. the webcam doesnt look great, but honestly your internet compression makes most/all cameras look bad IMO. also it drains your battery pretty quickly, which bugs me, but it is what it is. the only big downside i think was on zoom you can do those like greenscreen background things, and zoom wouldnt allow my macbook 12" to use them because it said it "wasnt powerful enough". i dont think thats true, but it is what it is. hopefully that helps!

axiommand js hmm I would recommend the MacBook Air for a few reasons, but mostly the keyboard, the better performance, and it’s 3 years newer and if you’re going to uní then you need to have a computer last a long time
Juanes gameplays I’m not exactly sure what your question is but i think if you were going to get a model, i would get the 2017 model as it has some notable improvements from the 2016, the biggest in how fast it feels is SSD speeds, which got a big improvement with the 2017 models. In day to day use, SSD speed play a large role in how snappy a device feels. As far as aging into 2020 and 2021, right now mine still is fast enough for my use, and I enjoy using it. I dont expect it to slow down too much over the course of the next year or two. Although i am sure it will get a little slower. Hope that answered your question.
Juanes gameplays mine works perfectly except for the camera and the keyboard annoys me. Im using 2015 mcbook. Everything seems fine after i upgrade to mc os Mojave. The mc os sierra seems to have some problems for mcbook 12 after upgrading. You can search for vdeo macbook 12 upgrade to sierra

Hi Marie, I wouldn’t worry about having the AppleCare+ as long as you are careful with your laptop, but there is always a risk. And yes, the 2017 is significantly better than the 2015-2016 models, especially the SSD speeds, which make the computer feel a whole lot snappier. Also what are you studying? To be very very hontest: the Macbook 12" is just the best made laptop of all time in terms of build quality, dimensions and display. The keyboard with the backlight on is a fast typer's dream. The trackpad flawless and unmatched. Just the dense feel of this packed laptop is amazing still to this day. I even like the bezels actually because it makes the Macbook look "just in place". Sure you could thin them down and get like a 12.5 or 13" in that very same machine. I would not mind it. Even the damn speakers are good quality ones. And still ... I am consistently thinking of selling it, even though I am not even a "power" user. The Macbook 12" is underpowered for simple tasks like preloading at least 3-4 youtube videos at once. Just opening the tabs for later is too much for this little machine. It's too sad. Even when I close every application running to play a 1080/ or 1440p/60 video I get stutters like every 3-6 seconds. It's that damn annoying and I got the 2017 model. The iPad Air 3 of my girlfriend feels multiple times faster and smoother in use. That very same machine with an even brighter display, an HD webcam (the latest one was a joke even at it's release date) and two Thunderbolt ports and I would even pay 2000 dollars plus for it. No joke it would be worth it. Most underrated Macbook or laptop of all time. It was just too pricy for the average user which I can understand.
hopey1809 i agree totally with your thoughts on the hardware, it is excellent. I wonder if something is wrong with yours though because i play RUclips videos on it constantly and i don’t get stutters at 1440p, even with other stuff on in the background.
This is the best MacBook review EVER!
ITS MY FAVORITE ONE ive ever owned!!
Excellent review. I have the 2017 as well and have not had a problem with it. I use it everyday. No fan noise (m3 CPU) and it will do video editing, but not intense video editing.
Eduardo Watkinz thats awesome! What kind of editing do you do?
Yep, I too have the 2017 12’ MacBook and I never had an issue with it. I bought it strictly for portability and it served its purpose. I have a MacBook Air for my main computer so it was more powerful.
Courtney Crawford its so portable, I don’t think people realize how awesome that Is
Hey, I had thought the exact same thing, that it would have been better if there were another USB-C port on the right instead of the 3.5mm port.
I’m hoping the day comes when I can just use my iPad Pro, it’s my favorite device.
But for now the macbook fills the role for coding!
I love my MacBook 12 2017. It plays perfectly 4K videos (use Safari, not Chrome). Audio speakers have great sound quality.
Love this video, about to pick one of these up today!
Fun fact though, in the 12in MacBook the battery is actually a part of the bottom case, not the top case with keyboard, so having the keyboard replaced under the quality program would not get you a new battery.
yeah you're totally right! my mistake.
and it was a great computer for me!
Im using the 2015 mcbook. If you don’t want for the battery overheated, use safari instead of chrome. The battery also will last longer with safari
Yeah absolutely, you gotta use safari. Chrome wrecks battery and your ram.
Need one for writing and school. Saved up a little, and still trying to think which model should I get, so thank you for this. It helped.
Awesome! Glad i could help :)

That’s awesome! Glad you liked it, hope it works out well for ya
I didn’t realize they were still selling them. They are great for portability which is why I bought mines back when. The one port didn’t even bother me. I still have mines and I never experienced problems with the keyboard at all.
Courtney Crawford yah the keyboard hasn’t been a problem for me yet either
Honestly a great review 👍 Exactly what I was looking for and covered everything perfectly :)
Joseph Wilson thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it :)
really thorough video my dude, very informative and to the point
I love the keyboard on this MacBook seriously considering getting one in 2020 from the apple site refurbished section
With the M1 processor and apple knowing their stuff, they wil make this MacBook awesome
exactly!! I wish Apple will continue this model with the M1 inside and a magic keyboard even that will make a slightly thicker. A cute little Beast.
Suprise Suprise.
This will basically happen except of the thinner bezels. It will have a new revised butterfly keyboard, and probably the same display.
Diamond HD but the bezel are so biiiigggg :(
Sam Alexander all we can do is hope that it might change
So is it good for like Photoshop/video editing? Also you said you done some light gaming on it, how was that? And what games were you playing? Great review!
ToonBible I didn’t try any photoshop, but i imagine if it can video edit, it can photo edit. It works pretty well in Final Cut Pro, but i didn’t try in premiere. I played a few blizzard games like heroes of the storm and Starcraft 2, and it wasn’t really playable in my opinion. Something like Dota 2 or League of legends might work though, but it would be on all low settings
Let me know if you have any questions or tests you want run on this laptop! Thanks for watching
Hey! I was just wondering where you got that skin for the macbook?
@@TheBjinko its the Apple retro skin from slickwraps (and no i'm not sponsored by them, i just like the skin)
Hi Sam! Great review! I’m thinking to change my MBP 15 inch mid 2015 base model per MacBook 12 2017 i7 16 Gb and 512 SSD. Do you recommend me this change? I need more portability but maybe I lose a lot of power. Thanks 😊
Javier Belloso well you would be losing a lot of power, but it really depends on how much power you need. What do you mostly use it for?
Sam Alexander I analyze data in excels, browse in internet, edit photos and videos occasionally
How the next 12" Macbook should be like:
1) A12X or better, A12Z. Please keep the prices low..
2) Smaller bezels
3) 2x USB-C ports
4) 1080p webcam
5) Magic Keyboard
Anandu Ls that would be a great computer in my book, top notch 😎Maybe try to fix the reliability issues on the butterfly keyboard? That being said, i haven’t had any problems with it yet.
Anandu Ls so you think that the 12 inch macbook is going yo be this year’s arm mac?
I hate those heavy stuff that’s always such a pain to go from
here to there...
I am kind of wishing am ARM 12” Mac.
yeah I’m wishing for that macbook too, just wait, I think Apple will make it
Great review and now i am considering buying one, but i think that it would be better to wait for the rumoured 12" ARM-Based MacBook.
Apple legit announced they were going to start using arm chips
Jizelle Barragan i Know!! I’m pumped to see its performance!

Jizelle Barragan I’m hoping we see a new 12” before the end of the year, but their ARM computer they’re releasing doesnt have to be a 12”, could be a iMac or a MacBook Air or something. We’ll see

Great review!
Great review, thanks. Is it a core m3 version?
lightiE yes, this is the core m3, the baseline model.
What's your recommended price for a refurbished/used 2017 MacBook?
well it depends on the spec, but for the bottom tier, core m3, 8 gb of ram, and 256 gigs of storage, which is my exact spec, I spent 500$.
So I guess I wanted to hear from yourself if the battery does or does not get replaced in the keyboard replacement programme for these 12" Macbooks?
yes you are totally correct, i had them mixed up and made a mistake. thank you for correcting it!

Hey Sam! What the video conference performance? Any thoughts? Thanks! 😊
ive used it a BUNCH on facetime and zoom and such throughout the last few months, and it works really well. the webcam doesnt look great, but honestly your internet compression makes most/all cameras look bad IMO. also it drains your battery pretty quickly, which bugs me, but it is what it is. the only big downside i think was on zoom you can do those like greenscreen background things, and zoom wouldnt allow my macbook 12" to use them because it said it "wasnt powerful enough". i dont think thats true, but it is what it is. hopefully that helps!

Hi Sam alexander,
Do you think that the MacBook 12” model 2016 is working on 2020 and 2021 ?
Can you answer me the question please?🙏🏽
Sam Alexander but do you think a 2016 model will work perfectly in 2021 and will update to next updates on near years?
Juanes gameplays mine works perfectly except for the camera and the keyboard annoys me. Im using 2015 mcbook. Everything seems fine after i upgrade to mc os Mojave. The mc os sierra seems to have some problems for mcbook 12 after upgrading. You can search for vdeo macbook 12 upgrade to sierra

I want buy one for my work at office, watch Netflix and RUclips, that's all. Is this one suitable for me?
Yes this computer will easily do all those things. If that’s all you’re needing it for though, I might suggest getting a cheaper computer like a chromebook
I found a Base Model Refurbished MacBook in Singapore for SGD 1,608 and checking in an Online Store (Lazada) for only SGD 1,025 or PHP 39,000 on Sale and it's a BrandNew. Not quite sure if this is a good buy for Online Classes due to COVID-19.

The background music unfortunately makes it impossible to watch this video, especially for people whose first language is not English.
I found one (second hand) on ebay, and the 2017 model doesnt come around too often. There are a lot of 2015 and 2016 models, which I heard are slower than the 2017 model. I bought it straightaway for AUD750 (a real bargain here in Australia). But one thing that bothers me is that the 12' MacBook 2017 model I bought isn't qualified for AppleCare+ and the warranty on it expired just a week ago... is it still okay for the laptop that doesn't have warranty on it? Should I sell it and get my money back?
Background: I am a student who needs a good but cheap laptop. 2017 Macbook 12-inch is selling for AUD1,150 - AUD1,250 on eBay at the moment. I bought a used one (2017 model, 8GB RAM and 256GB storage) for AUD750...
If it’s something that requires 3D modeling or something like that i would suggest buying a more powerful macbook, like the MacBook Pro.
Thanks for watching!
@@SamAlexanderRUclips Thanks for the reply! I'm a nursing student haha. I don't really need a Pro for what I am doing lol. The new Air with the better keyboard is out of budget (costs AUD1,400+ here in Australia). So the used 12inch MacBook is a good one for me, just am worried about the warranty, that is all hah
Mariee Jane gotcha, i think you should be fine. The keyboard is still covered until by apple till the laptop is 4 years old, so i wouldn’t be worried there.
Mariee Jane just try not to drop it too much (or let it get stolen) fingers crossed
Do you think this is a good option for web developers?
Just wanted to add that my sot is about 9 hrs streaming netflix, but again you paid $500 so something is probably wrong with your battery.
It’s possible, but the battery only has 93 cycles currently, so i think its healthy. But thats awesome you get such great battery life!
Is this macbook good for coding ? Because I am in college right now
hi can u help me so i have a 2017 macbook pro and my fan runs loud when my fan runs loud can i continue what i am doing or give it a break i just do product researching and completing orders on it that all
Thumbs up if you are listening to this after the Apple Silicon announcemnt
👍👍👍
Is the intel core m3 good for xcode and vs code ?
Where can I find that skin on ur MacBook
just google retro MacBook skin :)
But yes, if they make this laptop again with an A12Z and thinner bezels and a better webcam, two thunderbolt b=ports, it would be so amazing. Top tier laptop right there
@@SamAlexanderRUclips I get problems with stutters with 1440p/60 and 1080p/60 videos. They seem to be heavy on the CPU
hopey1809 ohhhh gotcha, yeah I’m not sure if i play videos at 60 FPS, my internet isn’t that great so that’s usually the bottleneck.
hopey1809 also thank you for the long and well thought out comment :)
Is it gd for 4K editing
Nah not really. It can do it, but if you’re trying to edit 4K regularly get something more powerful
I have this laptop but after like 30 minutes of coding it overheats does anyone know why
how warm does it get watching youtube?
so i just ran a quick test for you, i can post a video if you'd like but after 10 minutes of 1080p youtube streaming in fullscreen, the max temp the CPU hit was 52 degrees. as far as feeling the outside of the computer, its cold to the touch. *this was done on safari, not chrome*
@@SamAlexanderRUclips thanks for the info mate. I am hesitating between the 12" & the new 2020 MBP!
@@jerryx2000 no problem! I hear ya, I think it would depend on how much 4k video editing you want to do and what your budget is. hope it goes well for ya! let me know if I can answer any more questions you have
@@SamAlexanderRUclips I do no 4k editing. Where I live the 512GB 12" is 1450.- & the 13" is 1610.-. So for 145 more I would get the Pro.
@@jerryx2000 if the 12" is 1450, then i would get the pro for sure. the 12" only makes sense if you can get it at a large discount. i say get the pro!
That the 2015 model actually
Nah, its 2017, but the 12” was released in 2015!
What Mac OS is this any one? 🎉🎉🎉🎉
$500 to $150-250 right now 😮
