  • The ten best female tennis players from the 1990's
    I calculated the list by viewing the results of every grand slam from 1990-1999, and I gave a certian amount of points for each winner, runner-up, semi-finalist and quarter-finalist. The results are in the video.

    I don't think Monica would have kept dominating the sport like many people think, beginning with Roland Garros '93. When she got stabbed in Hamburg before the French Open, Monica was in bad shape, she was coming back after a 3 months break due to a virus. Steffi and Arantxa were the two in-shape players during that clay court season, I doubt Monica could've won Paris again. Maybe she could've won USOpen '93 and Australia '94, but soon after players like Pierce, Hingis, Williams would've arrived!

    sometimes stats arent good enough although its the fairest.
    Look at the wta rankings Safina is number 1 lol but shes the most consistent.

    Seles was the best period. Martina N took five to six attempts before she won Wimbledon, Seles lost in the final early in her career. MOST TENNIS FANS AGREE THAT SELES COULD HAVE EASILY WON 5-6 MORE SLAMS. LOOK AT HER RECORD AGAINST GRAFF BEFORE THE STABBING. Monica even said she was nowhere near the same level when she returned but still proved to be a tough opponent.

      I agree but unfortunately it will be one of the greatest what-if sports stories of all-time. Do I think Monica would have been the best player of the 90´s had she not been stabbed?Absolutely, but its not fair to Graf to say she wouldn´t have won those at all since she never got to compete against Monica for the ones she won in her absence. I would 100% put Hingis over Sanchez-Vicario though.

  • @bar78de
    @bar78de 15 лет назад

    No - sorry. One key fact of Monica Seles was, that she impressed her game so much and played her best tennis at the grand slams. 1991 she lost to graf in hamburg - but won the french open. she lost to sanchez in montreal but won the US open.
    1992 she lost to sabatini in rom but won the french. she would have one much more grand-slams cause she started to improve serve and net-play so much...

    @BelizeDrummer Some other people will disagree with you such as the Bryan brothers who specialize in doubles and have been doubles champions for over 270 Weeks. Robert has earned $8,684,530 While his brother Mike has earned $7,523,703 and the only titles they have won have been in doubles and mixed doubles. Another player also only winning titles in doubles and mixed doubles Mahesh Bhupathi won $5,746,978.

  • @hydrolito

    Margaret Court & Billie Jean King were dominate in 1960's to about 1973. Then Evonne Goolagong and Chris Evert. 1980's Evert still strong but Martina Navarotilova became dominate. Early 1990's Navarotilova still strong. Graf became dominate in 1990's and short time Seles who crazy man knifed (They should keep kooks locked up) and near end Vicario and Hingis, and Williams on the rise who dominate 2000's.

  • @sergall01
    @sergall01 14 лет назад

    Seles was clearly the number 1 player in the world before the stabbing and her age was 19 or 20 yrs old...if you add the possible slams w/out injuries,stabbing and Wimby, we are taking about of at least 10 more trophies.
    Likely with Seles around, Graf career slams total will be around 15 or 16. It was not her direct fault but she was the only one benefited by the incident.

  • @juju1305
    @juju1305 15 лет назад

    yeah, all the pro-graf always mention she led 3-1 against Seles in 92-93 and just forget to mention that the 2 matches played before (1990) and the one played after (1993) were all won by Seles... that's a convenient way of presenting things. The AO 93 is THE match they never mention because it show how superior monica was entering the 93 season.

  • @juju1305
    @juju1305 15 лет назад

    get your facts straight. Monica had a virus that kep her out of the game, but her early 1993 was as good as 1992 if not better. She had won the AO93 against graf and was in a great position to keep her french open crown. Sanchez did not make it to the finals at the french, which graf won against FERNANDEZ with the closest margin. What a joke...

  • @juju1305

    i feel so too. Arantxa never got to dominate like martina did.

    In between, you should have given points for 4th rounds also (the last day of the 1st week)...

    Hi
    Grand Slam Winners 90s
    Steffi Graf 14 GS
    Monica Seles 9 GS
    Martina Hingis 5 GS
    Arantxa Sanchez Vicario 3 GS
    Lindsay Davenport 2 GS
    Jana Novotna 1 GS
    Iva Majoli 1 GS
    Conchita Martinez 1 GS
    Martina Navratilova 1 GS
    Gabriela Sabatini 1 GS
    Mary Pierce 1GS
    Serena Williams 1 GS
    I don't know about Mary Joe but credit to her because she reached 3 GS Finals in the 90s and lost with the best (Seles & Graf)
    For me legend Martina Navratilova and young Serena Williams deserved to be on this list definitely.
    Honorable mentioned to Iva Majoli winner at French Open 1997.

Monica was number 1 before getting stabbed and had a mountain to climb to get back to it!!!!! yet she still did and spanked anyone in her way!!!!!! inbetween her and Serena Williams coming in was the human cyclone Hingus she was devastating the tour!!!!

  • @CJJAK37
    @CJJAK37 4 года назад

    Hingis is a better player than ASV. No denying that but I agree she’s 4th in this list . She only played half the decade whereas Arantxa played the full ten years and only missed 1 slam. She made the quarters or better in 28 of the 39 slams she played . 34 of 39 in doubles and all her fed cup and doubles titles and Olympic medals put her clearly third . So Martina is better but for the entire decade , Arantxa has the overall better numbers .

    Seles led 3-1 in grand slam finals against Graf, including their last meeting before the stabbing which was the 1993 Australian finals won by Seles 4-6,6-3,6-2.
    Graf even said after that loss in a press conference that she hasn't figured out how to beat Seles in the big matches. Keep in mind Graf's first 3 wins against Monica when she was only 15. Monica had won 7 of the last 8 slams she had entered, she was almost unbeatable and made 32 finals out of 33 tournaments played the past 3 years

    @hydrolito It doesn't surprise me at all if some prominent doubles players would wish doubles to get as much attention as singles, that's quite logical. But it doesn't change the fact that things look different. Doubles matches usually don't even get a TV coverage, while winners of singles become superstars. Let's take the example of Roger Federer - he has never won any Grand Slam in doubles and his highest ranking in doubles was No. 24; nevertheless, he's regarded the greatest ever!!

  • @hydrolito
    @hydrolito 12 лет назад

    @BelizeDrummer Graf was never number one in doubles, made it to #3, Hingis was the youngest to win tournment was ITF jr. Champion at age 12(Which allowed players up to 18), Won a major WTA tournment at 15 and was WTA Singles #1 at 16. Then Became both singles and doubles Champion at same time which only 2 women before her had done. Monica Seles was second youngest ranked #1 WTA Women in singles but only made it to 16 in doubles. Although likely would have been higher if not stabbed.

  • @hydrolito
    @hydrolito 12 лет назад

    @mindsikmuzik Vicario became number one in Women's doubles Oct. 1992, Monica Seles (Some also spell Monika Szelez) wasn't stabbed until April 30, 1993 so was number one before stabbing, Monica's highest in doubles was number was #16 which she reached April 22, 1991. Vicario reached #1 in Singles Feb. 6, 1995 (so had Seles not been stabbed Vicario still would have been number one in doubles and would likely have reached at least number 2 in singles and maybe number 1.)

  • @hydrolito

    @nagoyakim According to what I read Mary Joe Fernandez won $5,258,471 in career prize money. Win loss record in singles 437-203, in doubles 344-141, won 4 singles titles. In Doubles 17 WTA, 2ITF titles, Austrian Open 1991,French Open 1996 and another WTA champions. Reach number 4 in singles, also #4 in doubles.

  • @luirot9
    @luirot9 14 лет назад

    Absolutely, Hingis won more Slams in singles and doubles and even had an h2h very much lopsided in her favor. I also would not include Mary Joe, I don't see how even by your category she makes it, her longetivity on the top was not even that long. I would put Davenport much higher right after Vicario. Objectively I don't think quarterfinals and semifinals at the slam mean much.

    I always thought it would be fun to look at the overall winning % in the 4 majors. That would show a more complete top 10. But you have captured the most successful women of the decade .

    @hydrolito Well, it's not surprising at all that some good doubles players would wish doubles tournaments to be as popular as singles; that's quite logical. @BelizeDrummer She did focus on double's also although singles was generally her main focus.Didn't you read my other Post I said she made it to number 3? How did you miss that? In doubles she made it to Australin Open Semi finals 1988,1989, French Open to Finals 1986,1987,1989, Wimbledon won 1988, U.S. Open Semi finals 1986,1987,1988,1989 In Mixed Doubles Australian Open 2nd round 1991, French Open 2 R 1994, Wimbledon SF 1999, U.S. Open first Round 1984.

    Capriati 1991 reached SF (Semi final) of Wimbledon 1991and SF US Open 1991, won Olympic Gold 1992 may have had injuries as didn't peak again until 2001 #1 Oct. 15, 2001, won Austrian Open 2001-2002, SF Wimbledon 2001, SF US Open 2001,2003,2004. 1999-2000 Kourikova won 3 to jen's 1, During 90's to Graf only beat at Olympics. 1997-2001Venus beat Jen 4 times. 1997-2000 Hingis beat her 5 times, 2001-2002 Jen beats Hingis 4 times, 2000-2001beats Serena 4 times,2001-2003 Serena beats her 8 times.

    you are absolutely right. also in that 1993 aussie final match, Monica turned her game on in the second and third set to win 4-6,6-3,6-2 and you are right they forget their last meeting in australia won by Seles once more.
    Also in that match Monica had 7 aces against only 1 for Graf, Seles's game was only going to get better and better.
    When Seles and Graf were at their best, Monica definitely had the edge.
    Graf won half of her slams (11 of them) after the stabbing, coincidence? I think not

  • @hydrolito
    @hydrolito 12 лет назад

    Graf was sometimes losing to players on the rise by 1999. Against most still ahead against Davenport was 8-6, Hingis 7-3(one by w/o), Venus 2-1, Anna Kournikova 2-1, Serena 1-1 so was even in matches against her. Lower Numbers because shorter time at the top. Also since her comback Seles finally beat her again, and she played and beat Seles one more time before she retired.

  • @hydrolito
    @hydrolito 12 лет назад

    Current Woman's number 1 in singles is Victoria Azarenka, She also reached Number 7 in doubles. Lindsay Davenport reached number 1 in singles and also reached number 1 in Doubles and the most famous ones score high in both singles and doubles such as Martina Navoritlova made #1 in each, Hingis #1 in both at same time, Williams sisters also #1 in each, Graf #1 single, #3 doubles. Evert #1 singles #13 Doubles but won French 2 times and Wimbledon 1 in doubles.

  • @BelizeDrummer
    @BelizeDrummer 12 лет назад

    @hydrolito I don't think doubles are that important. The interest in doubles matches is quite low in comparison to the singles and that's why many players don't participate in doubles tournaments but they concentrate on their singles matches instead. Graf never focused on doubles and taking into consideration her injuries it was the right decision. Sport is about the achievements and Graf's results are just superb.

  • @hydrolito
    @hydrolito 12 лет назад

    @BelizeDrummer Some Double players were also successful at Singles Martina Navratilova had better grand slam doubles record than singles but made it to 1 in both, the William Sisters made it to 1 in both, Martina Hingis made it to 1 in both and was even 1 in both double and single at the same time, Vicario made it to 1 in both, Jana Navatna to 1 in doubles & 2 in single, Sabatini to 3 in both, Stefi Graf 1 in single & 3 in doubles.Anna Kournikova 1 in doubles, 8 in singles.

  • @hydrolito

    Won 1 Jr. Tournment at 12, and 3 at 13 including a Jr. Wimbeldon, and I think I made and error and ITF JR. was at 13.I think it was Anna Kournikova that won it at age 12.They allow players up to 18.

    @BelizeDrummer # 24 is actually considered pretty high as some are over 300 maybe even over 400. Most near top in singles ranked pretty high in doubles also, only ones I looked up recently who was close to number 1 in singles who wasn't in top 50 in doubles was Petra Kvitova who reached Singles # 2, Oct. 31, 2011 and was Ranked highest of 196 in doubles and Caroline Wozniacki #1 singles Oct. 11.2010, Highest doubles #52 Sept. 14, 2009.

    7 out of 8 wins in Grand slams events for Monica Seles before the stabbing, clear dominance...Monica by far the #1 player. Many people will always doubt Steffi's 22 grand slams wins as her chief rival was out of the game for 2 and a half years and was never the same player again and I am one of them who yells out THE BIGGEST INJUSTICE IN TENNIS HISTORY.
