One of the best male voices in the world ! FULL STOP ! !
+Carlos Recuerda Ruiz totally agree
Without Question
BILLY YOU WAS SO SPECIAL A FEW WORDS CAN'T DO YOU JUSTICE BUT WHEREVER YOU ARE PLEASE KNOW THIS YOU ARE MISSED & LOVED SO MUCH X
Billy MacKenzie....had the greatest voice. Never have I ever heard of a better voice. Have always been an Associates fan always will be. R.I.P Billy.
Still luv Party Fears Two amazing song
I’ve watched this documentary quite a few times and keep coming back to it.
The Associates were such a brilliant and odd band. The first three Alan Rankine albums are just sublime.
It always amuses me that lots of teenagers in 82 ( me being one of them ) would of rushed out and bought SULK thinking it would be rammed full of pop tunes. It is but very strange pop tunes.
Sonically and lyrically no one could touch them. “ A Labrador sits on the bed with it’s testes tied” etc.
I will love those first three albums forever.
Oh my word, my friend and I used to scream when Billy was on Top of the Pops. That wee smirk he had. Utterly and totally charismatic. Club Country was my fave song. A never to be repeated voice. Thanks for this documentary.
My favorite (male) singer of all time!
I love the background whippet behind each interviewee
I have no clue how many times Ive seen this documentary and never fucking noticed it was behind everyone single one......
My God !, I just wish he was still around.
A very sad ending to a truly unique voice and talent. Since first hearing 'Parties fears 2' I have never stopped listening to this amazing man. I was lucky to see him perform live in London. RIP Billy.
Having just discovered the Associates, I wish he had stayed with Alan Rankine, so much inspiration ..still making waves now !
Billy MacKenzies voice turned me on to other singers with unusual voices. If he hadn't opened my heart, at such a young age, to the possibilities of what a human voice is capable of I wouldn't have found or appreciated the likes of Bjork. Thank you Billy Mackenzie RIP xxx
Billy and Alan seemed to have that little "thing' when it came to songwriting... so once they split, it was pretty obvious that things would never be the same. Alan was so good at writing the music, his bass lines and music is killer, and Billy was a golden-lunged weapon. Lucky I still have my vinyl to remind me :)
one of the best, so dear to my heart
Can't believe it's been 23 years today. Huge loss. Left some timeless work for us to enjoy.
Glad to see that he has been happy for the most time of his life, and didn't suffer from depressions for a long time. Damned depressions. They really can kill. Especially when the medication is inaproppriate or interrupted.
RIP Billy!
Twenty years on the 22nd , love always billy.
Just wonderful, magical, special x
Beautiful man. Stunning voice.
Thanks for uploading this, it's the first documentary I've seen about The Associates/Billy...
I love Billy MacKenzie so much. He went way too soon.
Thank you so much for sharing that, never got over the fact that such a great talent had disappeared .......
Morrissey wrote "William it was really nothing" in honour of Billy and Billy wrote "Stephen you're really something", Stephen being Morrissey's christian name.
RIP Alan and Billy
one voice like Bowie's style and voice range's will never be forgotten
Yes music isn't the same without this genius
I'm glad to have discovered his music because he lives on in his work. This documentary of his life was beautiful though be painful for the world to lose such a pure and talented soul. Hope you're singing happily in a much better place of peace Billy.
One of the greatest lyricists there has been. The mystery of his writing is never fully recognised.Arcane poetry combined with Berlin trilogy inspired musical Europa..Billy 's voice was like a vocal Nijinsky..grace and power, beauty and paranoia.
@Johnny Connelly: couldnt have put it better myself! you have a talent for description.
all with some Peter Hammill scintilation.
What a special voice he had!
So so sadly missed by everyone, such a great man.
thank you for uploading this, Billy was an enigma x
I love watching this so much, really so good, thank you!
I play his version of Gloomy Sunday all the time I never knew his backstory great artist
Thanks for uploading this - great to see Billy being recognized at last.
Billy's voice is one of the most dramatic i've ever heard! He could've been an opera singer with it! A real missed opportunity!!
Thanks for upload
just in the middle of reading this extraordinary book... it was great to take me back to Billy's past he was so much loved by me he was a legend and always will be n my eyes with his spine tingling voice and good looks RIP
Thank you so much for sharing this.
thanks for this upload Billy will be missed but his music lives on

That's one Brilliant Scots Lad!
thanks for posting this ive read the glamour chase couldn't put it down ! this programme pus billy into pictures brilliant just brilliant so missed RIP billy x
The newspaper article states "Scotland Frank Sinatra". I think Scotlands Scott Walker is more accurate
+Daev Arthur Ford Good call Daev.
One must agree! ;)
It's funny but scott walker has been tared with the same brush!
No need to get so snotty mate! And it wasn’t me who said he sounded like frank sinatra anyhow it was the head commenter at the top so get yer facts straight before you try and be a smart arse troller!!!!
totally agree.
Documentario fantastico. Grazie di averlo postato
the whippet sculptures are a great touch
SO very sad,RIP Billy, where ever you are pal.
It's a pity!such i ingredebel and special voice he has. And then they find him dead rest in peace bill meckensi I'll never forget your songs! Grt RK
I've just come across this in Jan 2023 because of Alan Rankine's death earlier this month. I think I have a Billy Mackenzie album in the studio. I'm going to look for it tomorrow. I never really knew their music back in 1982, though hearing the chorus of 'Country Club' definitely rings a bell. What great music...What is the music at the end of the film? He had such a brilliant voice. He would have been magnificent in musical theatre.
Billy Mackenzie was and is my inspiration to my singing prowess and voice, and I continue to this day practice my vocal chords singing along to his unique style and vocal range on many of his records and thanks to him I have extended my vocals to reach the heights he had reached and I will forever be indebted to him forever. I love you Billy and hope you are in a beautiful place and surrounded by the warmth and feelings of those who loved you
Thanks for this docu btw Dundee legend
martha ladly the glamour mckenzie the voice alan rankinkine the composer and the best bass player creating a mercurial talent this is art this is art this is everything
brilliant brilliant brilliant!!!
He was gone before I even became aware of The Associates, so its weird to have this feeling but... Carrying around a CD wallet full of a departed artist's music... Its almost like some sort of modern day spiritual medium. The music is haunting when you know the history in hindsight. Strange to routinely listen to the voice of someone who has passed away. Maybe by just listening to the music you keep them "alive" in some fashion.
damn, i'm crying just two minutes in......
what a voice !Have always been a fan. love his indivvituallity
A belated thank you.
William, you were really everything
39 - daft lad. Sulk a great album
One day you see BIllie in this club, all jolly... and the next thing you hear is: He's "gone"... I still feel so incredibly sad when I think about it...
Still... I can't help but smile about what he might have to say on what's going on in popmusak nowadays... how he would have slated all the phonies and the insincere dross-peddlers.
The song "Cut Here" by The Cure is about how when Billy wanted to meet up with Robert and have a coffee. Robert declined, then a few weeks later, Billy died. Robert wrote the song about how bad he felt.
@Mr Oneiroman Sorry to bother but Joy Division opening for The Cure must have been amazing. Any standout moments of the show?
Whoever edited and created this documentary did a beautiful job. I am inspired. I make my own documentaries on some of my favorite artists (Phyllis Hyman).. and I feel that watching this makes me believe in how far my own series could go. Thank you!
This was made by Andrew Miller, and broadcast on STV in 2000 as part of their "Artery" documentary series.
A true friend who is still very missed. Wonderful memories and times. Special times we had were always with the dogs and when our first dog became a racing champion, for Billy was better than having a hit record. When he released Wild. And Lonely, we would read the music papers about the album. One wrote, Billy is still wild but no longer. We couldn't stop laughing because the album was named after a racing champion. He was far from pretentious and would rather spend time with other dog people than at pop star party. Great guy who will always be missed, loved and never be forgotten. Love you my friend xxx
😢 x
HOW LUCKY YOU ARE TO HAVE KNOWN HIM, HE ALWAYS LOOKED HAPPY ON TV AND HAD A BOSS SENSE OF HUMOUR TOO. ALL THE GOOD ONES GO YOUNG. RIP KENZO.
Hi James. I didn't even knew that there was a site for Billy until a couple of months ago. My daughter found it and I'm useless on this sort of thing. Over the 10 years I knew him, until he died, we were good friends. He'd spend a lot of time at my house, just going to our local pub and dog walking. Luckily we live just minutes away from a country park so there is miles you can walk. Some of the pub locals, who were associates fans would buy Billy a few whiskies. He didn't drink much so it wasn't hard for them to persuade him to sing a couple of songs. Club Country was a popular one. They weren't all over him talking music etc, so he liked that and he could relax. I've got some great memories and stories. One funny one was Boris Blank, Yello, ringing me up to see if I knew where Billy was. I had to tell him I didn't. There was some sort of party going on and Billy didn't want to go. He was sat next to me giving me signs for me to say I didn't know. And Boris kept asking me if I knew where he could be. Once Billy made his mind up you couldn't change it. Another one was when there was some popstar party he should have been at. He was already to leave my house to get the train to London and my phone rang. It was from the secretary of the Greyhound National Racing Association and they were making enquiries to ask Billy to present the trophy to the champion winning dog. It was on the same evening as the party. It wasn't a hard decision to make for him, the dogs came before any popstar gig. A lot of these people could never understand why he'd rather spend time with dog people than with them. All the videos on the documentary with the dogs I took. Who'd have thought they would be added to the documentary. The guy who made it rang me to ask if I had anything more personal than just about his music and pop world. The last time I saw him was a few days before Xmas of 96. He had been staying with me and we waved at each other as his train was pulling out of Manchester Station. To think that was the last time I'd ever see him again, I still can't get my head around it. And I've not listened to any of his music. I start a song but as soon as I hear that voice, no I can't finish it.
@@lindawren174 thank you for sharing such wonderful memories linda.
@@lindawren174 THANKS FOR SHARING THOSE WONDERFUL MEMORIES, NO ONE CAN TAKE THEM FROM YOU, JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES AND YOU CAN SEE HIM ANYTIME. LOVE TO YOU LINDA.
A beautiful soul.
Beautiful! What a voice...!
I realise the best singer ever was not financially viable but he was GREAT unrecognised but great!
How sad i did t know he had passed away what a voice ,,,, country club still a brilliant tune especialey by todays standards
Fourth Drawer Down is an excellent album.
I loved these songs in the Disco
Enjoyed this timeless 😎
Glorious.
"I think he thought 'waiting for the love boat' was a number one record, but his public just didn't agree". Well, that's the gamble you take when mixing art and commerce. These record companies never take blame and they always want the credit. I'd love to know what really happened with The Glamour Chase album and in particular "Empires of your heart" which should have seen the late of day in its own time.
+ted norton The Glamour Chase album was finally released in the early 2000s as a double album with a re-release of Breakfast, not sure if it's still available or not.
yes i know. I wonder how much of it was what HE wanted and how much they meddled ... Also why they did not put it out back then. It's great music.
+ted norton Agreed! "Empires Of Your Heart" is an absolutely outstanding track. A personal favourite of mine. And totally underrated. I wish it could get the respect it so rightfully deserves.
Lovely...😊
Beautiful.
Wonderful Artist😍👽👍💜he is the Haunting Voice on Boris Grebenshikov album Produced by Dave Stewart I hear that voice again🙏🎸🎤😿
So beautiful.......still love him
A big life.
Always love you Billy...
Miming actually was superb back on TOTP
So very talented ... my friend was his partner before his death... Billy was in a very dark place
One of St. Michael's best. Special memories of Billy at shop in Princess Street where no matter what was tried on his favorite comment was"That looks really smart on you"
Yello - Of Course I'm Lying, with backing vocals by Billy.
Good vid enjoyed the story
Billy, my man
Many thanks for sharing this particularly moving documentary. Just got Tom Doyle's book for Xmas and very annoyed with myself for not appreciating Billy's unique (if record-label-infuriating) talent while he was still alive. If you can hear me up there, Billy, I'm sorry.
R.I.P
Top bloke! Still miss his husky chops n whippets
Vultures in the credits aside (you know who you are, cunts) what a spanking good medicine of a documentary - this is how it's done, Billy was a situationist, a dadaist, a crooner, a belter, god popular culture is a wastebag without him. Alan Rankine was a champ too, so understanding, so talented. This is the first time I have rewatched this without crying - seems everybody makes their own life ultimately. Sigining off with my best wishes to the Mackenzie family and beyond. much love to all x
Bless.
i cant wait to hear his next single
Awesome
great documentary but the audio track is badly out of sync. It's not one of two frames, more like five or more
I'm so happy to see this documentary, the only drawback is the scottish accent, being french, I miss most of the meaning... I want subtitles in english ;-)
Give me a couple of days and I'll message you a transcript if you like.
sgtrayelwood Lovely response. I was just laughing to myself there recalling an occasion when I "translated" a lengthy bit of Scouse dialect by Ian McCullough for someone on RUclips who, by their own admission, "couldn't understand a word he was saying" ;-)
try and "reach " a little for once , my wife is French..........jeeeeeeeeeeezzzzz .
BILLY WAS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL MAN, GOD THOSE CHEEKBONES..
It is Nocturne VII. It's on the Beyond The Sun and Transmission Impossible albums.
Does anyone know the beautiful song at the end starting at 38:48 with Billy's haunting, soaring vocals? This song with the view of the Dundee countryside that Billy loved and the sad reminiscences especially by his dad and sister are just heartbreakingly beautiful. Fantastic documentary in every way!
Nocturne 7 … the closing track on his final album Beyond the Sun x
Before therev time
