Phil is so open and honest, seems like such a decent guy. He had a great look going on in the early days, the hair, make-up, clothes- great style.
Phil and the girls are great, i love the fact that they stayed great mates , they seem really down to earth
And. The Human League r Ace. A billion times better than anything that Simon Carol can ever come out with. 1 man in my ❤️. Should definitely have been a Ace number 1. Single 4 The Human League. Rebound. The B side song of ❤️ like a 🧭. Is well worth a listen 2.
They should have been as huge as Duran and Depeche.!!! ....
@@philipsanders9192 Your so right about that comment m8. I've been lucky enough 2 have a great Signed photo of my favourite Human League sweet ❤️ 4 ever coming in2 my love life and 4 the best night ever of my life ie Queen Joanne Catherall ❤️. Joanne Catherall sweet ❤️ doesn't know it yet. But she is largely responsible 4 the best night ever of my life.
It's so good to see genuine and creative people have success and not be too greedy but still be grounded in reality and open and honest about their careers.
I was going to write a comment, but you summed it up!
You can tell they are grateful to be able to punch this ticket in life.. I would love to have friendships.. true friendships with artists of that caliber. When you have a great thing like this, nurture it.. don't let ego get in the way
Dare is a masterpiece.
Still better than all the pop shyte of today ....
U r so right about that m8. And I have been lucky enough to have seen the best 1980s Pop band still going strong ather 35 years now. I've also been lucky enough 2 have met my all time heroes ie the 2 Human League babes ie Queen Joanne Catherall, Susan Sulley ❤️ and King Phil Oakey. I love Queen Joanne Catherall epy 4 the best night of my life ever. Even though the unexpected 3 taxi services home to Portsmouth. From Brighton. 6 years ago. When I had a great time in chatting 2 Queen Joanne Catherall ❤️❤️xx. I've have also told both of these 2 sweet ❤️ s ie Queen Joanne Catherall ❤️ and Susan Sulley ❤️. The reason 4 y I have nicknamed them Queen. Which is the game of Chess. And the fact that the 2 Human League girls and Philip Oakey r my all time heroes. ❤️❤️❤️
I realise we all have the ‘ music was better in my day ‘ syndrome but there’s no disputing the diversity and creativity of the various movements between 62 and 90 - only 28 years when compared to the same timespan since 1990. I was born in 64 and I think for pop etc music lovers there’s been no era to touch it. A guy on here once stated how there was only 15 years between The Beatles and The Human Leagues’ first albums...unbelievable but true 🏴😇❤️from the Wilverley Enclosure Witches
Completely agree!
You are so right, I'd tip my hat to you if I were wearing one.
Early Human League was just fascinating and even catchy stuff. Interesting group.
Yes i love early Human League but it didn't make much money. Always the same thing.
Hot damn! Marc Almond should be reading books on tape.
Dan great idea
Damn... I have always loved their music. Beautiful songs, beautiful people. Literally!!
I saw them supporting Souxie and the banshee at Liverpool university around the fine of the Travelogue album and they were amazing!! .....
Saw the original League in 1979 at Stateside in Bournemouth. Brilliantly Avant Garde and original. Went to the aftershow party and still have their autographs from than night.
I then saw the new line up at the Gaumont in Southampton in '81 and although Dare is truly a classic album, they were crap live.
They have struggled to create a decent follow up album since.
There were some gorgeous men in these 80's bands. Good time to be a groupie! I was a groupie in the 70's though, and we had some choice meat back then, also! lol
Meat?
Phillip Oakley I have ALWAYS been in love with you ❤️💋❤️💋
Funny how The Human League and Def Leppard have kinda followed a similar tracjectory for part of their careers. They both come from Sheffield, formed in 77, shared some glam influences(Bowie etc),were part of important 80's movements (new romantics, new wave,2nd British invasion),both kickstarted the 2 definitive dominant 80's music forms(synth-pop,hair metal),both had albums called hysteria(tho one was more successful than the other! Not need to guess lol),both are fans of each other too as well as being friends. Phil Oakey said that DL are the HL with loud guitars and more hair, and Joe Elliot said that when DL were making pyromania it was influenced by dare.
You want the 80s you get the 80s...saw them last week. Still 👌
most fab of all groups !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm a Doncaster boy now living in London. I wish I'd remained in my leafy enclave in South Yorkshire with my fellow hillbillies
What a fascinating story. One of the greatest bands of the 1980s.
The clip to HUMAN was when they appeared like dynasty people, very glammed up
Thank you for this video
I LOVE EVRY TUNE (SUNG BY ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MEN IVE EVER SEEN) ..THEN AND NOW WITH THE GUYS AND JUST THE GIRLS ! THNX POSTER
I love Suzanne and Jane ❤😍
Tell me when was a classic Human League sound after a long time of nothingness. They're a great band but shouldn't try and become a 00's band. We love them for what they are and have been. Don't flog a dead horse. My daughter plays your songs along with the current rap crap so that can't be a bad thing. As for us 40-60 year olds we still love watching you play. Keep the dream alive guys
Strange, the important member Ian Burden, who wrote "Sound of The Crowd" and "Love Action" is not mentioned at all.
He's very modest with the lowest of low profiles
And the success of Heaven 17 is a little over blown. Sure they had more success in the UK then here in the US, where they only had one marginal hit that got any radio play. That was Let me go, and peaked at 77 in the US charts. I remember them because of that song and the.station I listened to at the time WHTT used to play the song. But folks, Heaven 17 is pretty much unheard of in the USA.
14:47 Phil is beginning to wonder if it was a wise move to ask the girls to join.
Phil must’ve been bombarded with gay obsession
Gay?
@@peternagy-im4be yes gay, you know? Woolly woofters? Shirt lifters? Uphill gardeners?
@@M4rloww woofters?
This reminds me of when I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar!!!
Just moved away from Sheffield and the sights from the tram are heart rending. Mid noughties?
1999
Does anyone know the real story on the split. Martin said he walked into the studio and the girls were there like it was preplanned to go in another direction. It was management and Philip who knew and Martin and Ian were surprised. I don’t think Philip tells the same story.
Basically the management decided that the split was going to happen anyway and conspired with Phil and Adrian to throw out Martyn, then immediately give him another project. As Martyn mentioned in his book, they got two bands for the price of one. Ian knew about the plot but was on the fence until the last moment, so they didn't expect him to follow and it ruined their plans.
Martyn tells it as if it was completely out of nowhere, but Phil often recalls Martyn missing rehearsals and meetings prior to that, so there might be more to the story.
I knew the narrator was Marc Almond!! I recognize that voice anywhere.
In recent interviews all members of the original Human League have acknowledged that Gary Numan gave them the audience they had always wanted, sadly his success was the what split the band even though the cracks were already there. But the success of the new Human League and Heaven 17 is down to Numan.
Wow watching the videos from this band when I was a kid gave me the impression that this band was made up of wealthy jet set patricians from the world of Roxy Music's Avalon. To find that they are all from a steel town and that the women were never debutantes is far out!
most bands miss the point, wimmen is the ensiol
Can you imagine a pop group going into a school nowadays and saying they want to take two of the teenage girls away on tour and ..oh yes .. the lead singer is going out with one of them ..Lol people would have a fit! But it was acceptable in the 80s ???Lol
One was an adult (18) and the other 17, so I'm not sure anyone would be too bothered today.
@@clairenoon4070Exactly right
What
i wouldnt care about the human leage withot the girls
2 Questions they should have asked Phil Oakley...Had he ever see the 2 girls before asking them that one night in the club to join the group?
When Ian & Martin left the group where did he(phil) get the money to purchase synthesizers(for himself & adrien)?
Yes, I wondered that too. Had he ever seen the two girls before? Why choose them - presumably on the basis of looks?
The group has always maintained that they came together by mere happenstance.
From what I read, Phil was at the club with his girlfriend, and he had never previously seen Joanne and Susan. Their style of dancing, sort of a controlled chaos, caught his attention.
@@Oksana7305 Phil put an eye on Joahnn that night, I read It from old interview on thier fan website

Dare worst human league album
I always think seconds is their best song and it never gets mentioned
Absolutelement .
Dare was pretty much perfect, that was always going to be extremely difficult to top. Would be for any band. But boy am I glad they made it, that album, especially for a synth over, is so enjoyable to listen to. They knocked it out of the park w/that album.
*synth lover :)
Phil Oakey seems such a down to earth and a humble person.
He genuinely is. That's South Yorkshire for you!
Yeah, met him several times. Lovely fella.
Seems like a really good fella
cos he and the girls are from oop north, that's why, salt of the earth. Still normal people. No airs and graces.
Human League was very underrated. It was the first UK Techo band
Phil has such a great unique voice. The voice of the early 80s
Don't you want me baby is still being played today. Probably the number 1 song for the next 1000 years.
The Human League is the best Synth Pop band in the world
What a great group, Phil and the girls were my heroes back in the early 8o's along with Soft Cell. I was blown away by how good they looked and sounded in concert in Dublin circa 2000.. so tight ❤
I saw them in Scotland about 2005. They were great
@@india239 saw them in Dublin anout the same time..coulda been the same tour...yeah I'm sure it was..that's beautiful 😊
Fabulous, I just loved this. I was a huge Human League fan back in the day and I still am because their music is still relevant and exciting!!
I saw The Human League about 15 years ago. Phil Oakey was in his 50s and smoking hot. It was a smallish festival in Scotland. We stayed all day just to hear them play in the evening and they were fabulous
Absolutely ❤ 💯
I will go see The Human League if they have a concert.
Hopefully it'll won't be 2 long B4 U do m8. U will love it when u get 2 c the Human League sweet ❤️ s and Philip Oakey 2 play live. I've been lucky enough 2 have seen The Human League play live 18 times in total now and hopefully it'll be 19 times later this year. Queen Joanne Catherall ❤️ my hero 4 the best night ever in my life. And Susan Sulley ❤️ and King Philip Oakey 2. R very very nice 2 talk 2.
the last bit, like last few mins when Phil talks about why he doesnt live in London....i loved how humble, honest, vulnerable of an answer he gave. I've heard his other interviews and he is so human (no pun) and its so nice to hear people be so genuine.
The early 80's was an explosion of creativity good and bad. Human League=Good.
So, Ian and Martin decide "we're out of here" and leave Phillip and Adrien to shoulder the burden of a tour? (along with possibly being sued £250,00 for not going through with the tour) I don't know if I could be in the same room with those guys, ever. I'm really glad that Phillip pulled it off and the group became so successful.
Martyn was actually kicked out of the group that he had started. Their manager colluded with the record company to pull the band apart. This video doesn't tell the whole story. Watch the video called Synth Britannia and you'll see that Martyn Ware was made the scapegoat for the group's lack of success. The record company actually pulled a shrewd move and split the Human League up and got 2 groups for the price of one. Martyn Ware came up with the name The Human League, it was his band, and then he came up with the name Heaven 17
Philip, Joanne and Susan are very likable, perhaps it their provincial-ness
You r so right about that m8. And Queen Joanne Catherall ❤️ doesn't know it yet. But Queen Joanne Catherall Sweet ❤️. U must have some magic powers inside your ❤️ 2 wards me. Because Queen Joanne Catherall Sweet ❤️. U r partly responsible 4 the best night of my life ever.
Major crush on the birds = Human league devotee for life.
I've just been re-listening to the Human League's albums and can't believe I've never seen this documentary before - especially since it's from 1999 (22 years ago!) and must have been repeated loads. It was interesting, and I really like how they've stayed down to earth, but it would be nice to see a longer, more in-depth look at the band. I know these kinds of documentaries are meant more as summaries/intros, but it felt like there was so much more to talk about, especially after 'Dare.'
One of my favourite groups of the 80's.
Martin Rushent was in my opinion a big reason why the re-organized Human league took off! Interesting ... Marc Almond (Soft Cell) was the narrator
The hard facts of life that the music industry pampers you when you are popular but spit you out and throw you away when the next best thing comes along.
Thanks for posting this, it was humbling to see them and very insightful look into their life
Saw their concert on 6/3/24 in Brisbane!! Awesome show!
Didn't realise they were still going
For me, the Human League begins when Phil meets the girls in late 1980.
Oh yes. I absolutely agree.
Nah. If it wasn’t for the original lineup with Martin, Ian and Adrian there wouldn’t have been a Human League
@@Mind-your-own-beeswax Yes but they achieved nothing until Joanne and Susan joined with Phil then they went stratospheric.
Funny, that's where it ends for me
@@neildmonte8786 Please explain why?
Will always have a place in my heart. I always knew about the disco where Phil met the girls but never knew about the impending tour and his mission to find the girls that night. Good stuff
they have a special place in my heart side by side with tears for fears
great band, and great people. and Philip... what a babe.
Phil is gorgeous 😂
"I believe in truth though I lie a lot"
Song writting at it's best..
Indeed, Donald Trump lives by that mantra.
I'd love an old SAAB
OK, so skipping the early stuff... But missing out The Lebanon? Surely one of their best pieces...
Not their best by a long way
Interesting documentary about one of our favourite bands! We have added this video in the Salines FM playlists because it's totally recommended. Follow us! facebook.com/salinesfm2015/
brilliant.im getting a new perspective on this group.always like them but now I really like them
Did Michael Kane.... Thank you for posting this!!!....❤ I love the Human League.... Such a Phenomenal Group with Beautiful hit songs and memorable unforgettable lyrics!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Loved human league! Summer 1981 was so memorable as a little girl hearing don’t you want me on the radio - that song is an 80s new wave classic
Philip oakey comes across as a genuinely nice fella. Great music.
One of my fav ever groups, so exciting, my first ever 45 single was Empire State Human, after that I was hooked. And... I also remember vividly the excitement of buying Dare😁
Wonderful band that contributed greatly to my teen years... cheers HL!
Talented, humble and not pretentious, the music industry could learn a lot from them.
they are by far my favorite musicians not only because of records but because what theyre like in real life. im so impressed with them.
But no mention of "The Lebanon"?
I'd been a fan since their early years but "The Lebanon" is my third favorite song of theirs.
Don't you want me....NEVER grows old.
The first two albums are so good, still my favourite synth pop albums of all time
Hysteria is a really good record, actually. Maybe one dud track in the James Brown cover.
Seattle brought us grunge. England brought us some of the best techno!
I loved the Human League, and I admit that I didn't like the girls back then! They couldn't dance in time to the music! Now, it's neither here nor there.
I was a Human League follower since Travellogue. Full into the Martin Rushent era. Then saw them live in I think 2010 in Vienna at an electronic art event. They started after midnight (!) and they were amazing! Unlike the Pet Shop Boys, for example, they managed the art to mainstream perfectly, stayed true to their early followers while also performing "Together In Electric Dreams" ... Great respect to Philip Oakey and the girls!!!
Great documentary, thanks for posting it!
R.I.P. Martin, you have made the best of the Human League!
Enjoyable documentary... I was trapped in '77 and dismissed them as a 'Fashion Attack' But Dare became one of my favourate Albums, even if I didn't buy it 'till '82! Love 'em to bits now. Heritage.
I love travelogue and reproducion my favourite by Human League
@Daniel Large It's persoanal taste really. I too love the edgy sound of Reproduction ('Blind Youth' etc), but also get a lot of fun out of their later stuff.
Dayum, Phil was still hot in '99.
Very humble & honest people IMO. And a bloody great band too!
VERY humble. I see loads of fake humbles, but they are truly humble.
Philip Oakey is so hot in this documentary.
Fredrika Holm They are fantastic...
I'm actually in disbelief at how hot he is in this
i love this .... cant get enough human league , wish they had released The Things That Dreams Are Made Of ... as a single in 81.. so good!!!
Yes, Nic I agree. I have always said this. In fact , not taking Adrian seriously was one of the league's biggest mistakes. If they had released more of his songs , they would have had a lot more hits.
They should of been as huge as Duran and Depeche !!!! ?????????
They weren't ' UP TEMPO '
ENOUGH !!!
GARY SAW THAT AND DID IT.
Phil Oakey was (and still is) a hot bloke.
They also failed to mention the Fascination EP that was released in the USA. All they said was two songs released between Dare and Hysteria.
Love you all! You are such humble people, full of integrity. 🙏🏻✨🇬🇧
The 2 girls brought life to the group. Songs sound better!
Actually jagguy1225, it was Phil who told Martyn that he was going to throw him out of his own group that he founded! Ian to his credit did not stay and went with Martyn to form Heaven 17 (though it later transpired the split was engineered by their manager Bob Last). In the end both sides had success and Ian and Martyn were clever to agree 1% royalties from the next Human League album in return for letting Phil use the name!
When he said that he wanted to be loyal to the girls and not just throw them away and move on and it made me think of Prince dumping Wendy and Lisa
COOL DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE HUMAN LEAGUE - 11/22/20 - LANCE ROMANCE :)
Every band has their 1 song and The Lebanon is it for The Human league
let me just say that the human league is perhaps the finest band in the history of pop music and when you stop and think about how awesome that is it almost makes you want to pass out from the magnitude of all of the various pop bands throughout history . I would have to say that the human league is really important in terms of musicianship and just all around stage antics and equally impressive is the massive catalogues of musical numbers and video ensembles . In fact many people surmise that human league is better described as super human league . Just wow , guys .... and of course gals as well . And so two thumbs up and five gold stars , Massive big ups to this group . Ok then , sums it up for me .
Human was the best song ever made !!!!
The Human League has made a lot of good music, but, Don't you want me, baby, is a classic, and it will still be played long after we have all gone.
Definitely up there with the best if 'new romantic new wave synth pop bands ...ah when music was good!
My era!!!:) very proud!!; thank you England!!!
