A piece of tear away stabilizer or even computer paper will make those decorative stitches less puckery. Also would suggest smaller scissors for cutting threads - less chance of chipping the paint. Other than those suggestions I just want to thank you for all you do on these wonderful old machines and these videos. They are such a help and will result in more of these machines being saved.
Also... there is a small hole in the small leverlike thingy on the bobin case. Put the bobin thread through it when you use decorative stitches. They will be much neater, as this ever so slightly puts some more tension on the bobin thread, resulting in a very smooth surface on the good side of your stitch. Combining that trick with some kind of stabilizer will take you straight to decorative stitch heaven!
Thank you so much for posting this series of videos on the Bernini 503. I worked on mine, along with your videos, and am now ready to try the first sewing. Like your machine, my lever for the decorative stitches is jammed, so will keep applying oil and warmth over the next week in hopes that it will free up. You are very generous in sharing your knowledge with us.
Lol-I’ve been worrying that I don’t use my vintage machines enough……but you have put my mind at ease😄 3 or 4 times a year? I use mine 3-4 times a month 😝
ly informative thankyou. I have a 530 and the decorative stitches aren’t working, i will follow your advice and try to get it going. I love the Bernita, it is a beast.

Hello i have this machine and want a knee lift for it but in the hole where it goes it is a flat metal thing, can I install one my self? Or is it not possible?
Without seeing yours, I'm going to make a guess that this "flat metal thing" is a knee control lever. A knee lift for the presser foot would be a separate device and I don't think yours came with one?
I have the same machine and although it can do a straight stitch, when I change the width of the zigzag the needle won't move at all. Even on the highest width it still does a straight stitch. Does anyone know the reason for this?
