I quite like that thing, even if it is a bit fiddly, at least it has a vol' and Squelch. I don't think it will ever transmit anything like 4 watts out the aerial by the time it gets down that thin coax you would be lucky if 3 watts got the the aerial. Still, it looks handy to have in a car or get a battery pack for it, but if there is no low power a battery will not last all that long. Mind you it sometimes surprises me how long they run on batteries as most of the time you are on receive anyway. Strange design and I don't think the speaker will be up to much, but speaker technology has moved on a lot. I am amazed it was putting out all that power though, not that it will all get to the aerial anyway, but interesting little set. If it has two boards I bet the board underneath has FM on it, I wonder if the pot on the front is for mic gain or deviation, it the other board in FM then it might be. I wouldn't like to try to repair it, I might loose it trying to work with surface mounts and tight spaces as well. Not that I would want to repair it, but you know what I mean. You get a huge set that puts out 2 - 2 & 1/2 and this tiny thing puts out 6 watts!!! How does that work?
Hi Richard .Just feels like it does not know what it wants to be , I think I would rather have a good handheld with battery adaptor if I wanted an occasional or emergency radio in the car , just my thoughts
I've never worked that out, but I watched the launch of the SpaceX rocket to the space station and saw it had over 800 thumbs down...perhaps they can do a better rocket. I do this so that when I'm no longer around there will be support for the classic models weather good or bad, they are all as important to support. There are not many commercial 2-way radio engineers who will even give a CB radio a second glance! Perhaps the thumbs downers are the burner brigade, the music players, the illegal use of amateur radio equipment on CB folks, or those people on 19 who never move channel & talk all day base to base! Richard
@@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21 to be honest rich cb radio is making a come back I live in Sheffield I've been on since 1994 it was busy. UK CB radio servicing Richard you do a fab job and i often direct newby cbers to your channel when they have a question which your videos will answer. I honestly suspect that some thumbs down may be accidental. Your videos will surely help cbers squeeze a bit more life and performance out of their equipment. I have just ordered a crt xenon, any chance you can do a vide please?
Hello I've just ordered one of these from Moonraker as a starter set and kind of "bug-out" comms. Why did you open it up and try to adjust settings, and should I adjust any. . . ? I'm hoping the supplied antenna is sufficient, but at least there is an option to upgrade. Thanks for the video Oh And, tidy your bench ;-) :-o
As a 2-way radio engineer, part of my job is in adjusting radios for optimal legal performance. This came doing 5W output. The legal limit is 4W. I was unable to reduce the power output to the legal limit, so a disappointing result for me. You can only make adjustments if you have test equipment to show how the radio is performing. Richard
Richard, it would be interesting if you checked power with the test set on the BNC while the power adapter is also connected. This gave me a funny reading on my Albrecht and I deduced that you really need to use the SO239 lead when the power adapter is connected to the radio.
I've just looked over the instructions & can find no mention of switching hi/lo power. I know our test sample was doing the full legal limit of 4W. Although the instrictions mention the hi/lo on the display it doesn't go on to say how to get it into low power oir back. Is it possible this is a pre-programmed feature where for example, in Germany AM use was limited to 1W until about 2014. Richard, G0OJF, UK
@@davidelrick3131 I don't believe that as at 4W the radio was, after 30 seconds in transmit, too hot to handle. United States research (with death row prisoners) produced a safe limit for handheld radios to be 7W absolute maximum which is why most hand-portable business radios are 5W, and mobile phones to be 0.6W.....and CB radios to a limit of 4W Richard, G0OJF, UK
I bought a Midland M20 to replace my lost CB radio. The manual says of power “up to 4w”. This made me suspicious so I put it on a dummy load and it was 2w on UK channel 40 rising to 6w on EU channel 1! The power preset didn’t let it go to 4w on UK at all because it has a ladder resistor across it. You can disconnect this by cutting a link for “export power” so I did that and it didn’t boost the power by much at all but it let me get to 4w on UK. Power on EU didnt increase at all, it’s still 6w. Which is wrong but i5 won’t do 4w across the whole two bands. The radio was in a sale for £82. It’s got a good noise blanker.
It's in this video & on p5 of the downloadable user manual. I've cut & pasted it below too:- FREQUENCY BAND SELECTION The frequency bands must be chosen according to the country you are in. Procedure: 1. Switch off the unit. 2. Turn it on while pushing the “Q.UP” and “SC” buttons. 3. By pushing the CH ▲CH ▼ buttons, select the desired frequency band (see the chart here below) 4. To fix your selection press the “Q.UP” button. Notes: In the UK frequency band, you can directly select the CE band by pressing the AM / FM key for 2 seconds. Richard, G0OJF, UK
Great video Richard, I'm a fan of the pni stuff and own the pni 8000L which you covered. Also while I was looking on the pni website they have a new hand held radio from tti which is the tti tcb h100 which looks more like a business radio. I thought that might be worth a look? Regards Glenn
The 3 PNI mobiles I've tested so far have been fine. We have the posh one with the big display in stock too, but have not had time to touch it yet. The TTI H100 is already on order. Richard
Richard, I bought one of those extra 48 antennas a few months ago, a moment of poor judgement. Don't believe the bandwidth on the packet, it's tuned for CEPT but has narrow bandwidth and is not usable on UK frequencies.
@@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21 I'll look out for it, I've changed my magmount for a Cherokee Half Breed (Solarcon copy) on a boot lip mount. We'll see how that performs next time I talk to you.

Powerwise, maybe try a lower voltage? :) on 10.8v it puts 2w on low. Anyway, mine has spring contacts for the speaker, onboard mic, sharts in AM, had to improve decoupling to stop the AM modulator auto oscilating, a few MLCCs here and there on the vcc line. I might add more as it works better now but still oscillates on lower esr batteries. The original Midland battery cases fit well.

I've not seen the Midland 52 here in the UK,but it looks like a Midland 42 with a car connector. Out of that list you have two 'car kit' type handhelds. The TTI H100 is a hand-portable & not a car set at all. If you are using in a car then you will need a car aerial.Using a handheld in a car on it's own aerial will restrict range to about 100 Metres. I'd be more tempted to suggest something like the CRT S-Mini & a magmount aerial for occasional use. I will add that using those handheld ona vehicle adaptor kit such as the Midland & PNI sets you mention; in use, those radios get very hot. Richard, G0OJF, UK
