This may seem like a simple one but in reality when do you ever learn how to set up your board? They don’t teach you this in a lesson. I’ve done it myself where the footstraps are in the wrong position and it makes riding uncomfortable, or when I got my first board and set up the fins the wrong way. There is so much going on when you are learning to kiteboard that it can be very overwhelming. I had a student the other day refer to his first day of kiteboarding as controlling panic.
Once you learn to control the panic things become much easier and it all starts to fall into place, slowly but surely. All kiteboarding requires is patience, practice and dedication. Those are the ingredients for success, however having your foot straps in the wrong position for example can really set you back. That was the case for this student of mine who was learning to ride upwind.
He had learned to control the panic, relax, fly the kite, put the board on his feet and ride the board both ways but was struggling with going upwind. He brought his own board and had set it up at home before the lesson. The size was good, we had the right kite for the wind and everything seemed promising. When we got out there he was getting up right away but was having trouble opening up and riding upwind.
I took the kite to demonstrate what he needed to do. Once I had the board on my feet i realized the problem was his foot straps were closing him in and making him ride downwind. With both the straps facing forward and not allowing for any twist in the hips, this was his problem.
So that’s the story of why we're making this video. To help all of you who are getting into kiteboarding have all of the necessary information you need before you go. Something as simple as the placement of your foot straps can make all the difference.
    Here’s how you do it:
    1. Stand on your board with your feet a shoulder width apart.
    2. Twist your hips and pretend you're riding to the right and left. Take note of where your feet go when you open up each way.
    3. Set your foot straps on the board and make sure that you’re not having to angle your feet in the straps as you open up. If you set your straps at ‘0’ ‘0’ which is straight, it’s going to close your hips and shoulders downwind.
4 You want to offset them so that they are facing towards the front of the board which will allow you to open upwind.
    5. Place the screws in the right holes so that your straps are shoulder width apart, wider if you are planning on landing hard or doing tricks.
PS. Your fins face out on both ends not inward!

Thanks for the video. Good tips. I once had the issue that my feet were too far in which made it difficult to go upwind because I couldn't get enough pressure on the backside edge. Once I made sure that my heels are closer to the backside edge, going upwind was a lot easier.

Controlling the panic - it doesn’t allow you to focus on anything else, super effective at drowning out worries and useless overthinking - active meditation in the elements ^.^

Blake mate, I really like how you go over the reasons for things a few times in all your videos and this one is no exception. I'm an intermediate kiteboarder; but what you show has helped fill in a lot of gaps in my learning and looking forward to the rest of them. Hopefully you make it over to Australia sometime and check out the seabreezes here.

The way I adjusted mine was to squat and see the angle which allows me to get my bum closest to the board. The idea being I wanted it easy to reach my board when putting it on my feet holding the handle, to spend less time before a water start. Now I do it holding a foot strap. However, it doesn't make sense to put torque on knees or having feet twisted when landing.

    Hi Blake,
I am still a beginner Kiteboarder and your videos help a lot to learn all the practical things, that trainers had no time to explain.
One thing I still don't know is how tight my foot straps should be. If they are nice and tight to ride, I have a hard time to get in, but if they are loose I can get in easier, but this makes it harder to go upwind.
Do you have any tips for that matter?
And then I would like to know which mount you use for your actioncam when we can see the bar in front (some kind of chest mount) - then you take it in your hand and film your self - and then you put it back on your chest somewhere. How do you do that?
Thanks and greetings from Austria, Mike

    I’m a little lost
When I beat left , wind behind me , my left toes are slightly turned the way I am travelling
When I go right with the wind behind this is reversed , my right toes are slightly twisted forward.
This only works if the foot Straps are straight and I twist first one way then the other
    Am I doing this wrong

Great question, my friend. 🤙🏽 While there are lots of opinions floating around out here in the online world, you ultimately have to do what works best for YOU individually. If straight across the board (cowboy stance) works, then roll with it. Good winds! -Aaron

how tight should your foot straps be?

    • @MACkiteboarding
      @MACkiteboarding  5 лет назад +2

Hey Casper! This is a personal choice. Some people like the locked in feeling, while others enjoy being able to quickly slide their feet out. Do your straps have toe bars that you can grab with your toes? If so, you can get away with a bit looser strap.
