So would the "patriarchy" be a representation of the Animus as it is the "collective" man in the female psyche? And being possessed by it would then be the woman (unconsciously) acting in the way of her projection of her introjected "collective" man? And what's the difference between Anima/Animus possession and narcissism? As in the myth of Narcissus and Echo. And how does borderline fit into this picture?

Thank you! Yes, that's a planned video; the original version of this podcast had a lot of their personal history in it. It's coming, just need to frame it appropriately :)
Thank you for your content and for this video: it cleared up some confusion about the animus and in some part for me also the anima. Still a hard topic for me to wrap my head around but it sure is becoming more and more clear. Just like everyone else who watches this: I've got some questions. (this might not be the place to ask it, probably in the discord but I don't have a credit card to gift via patreon) 1. What are some must reads to really understand the psyche? 2. Are there some depth psychologists who are lesser known but did great/fundamental studies on the psyche? 3. Are there books that make depth psychology very practical? Where you read/study it and you can implement it in your own life. 4. Is every topic in depth psychology as important as other topics, or can some be "neglected"? (I mean with topics: dreams, archetypes, mythology, religion, typology, alchemy, psychodynamics, etc). I think it would be interesting to hear it from a professional instead of reading what hobbyists have to say. If there is maybe a blogpost/website of some sort that you or someone else knows that answers one or more of these questions I would already be happy. Greetings! :)
What good books / sources are there (besides Jung's works) to read more comprehensively about the anima/animus? Great video, very informative. Thank you.
Currently, no. But I'm tempted to make a final video in the series along the lines of my exposition in the Individuation video from a couple of weeks back - to reveal the depth psychology of the whole Divine Comedy.
Amazing content. Me being a more artistic thinker, I find it difficult to understand these genius, constructive insights! However I have understood after carefully listening. Thank you, I’m working on being a author and professor of depth psychology. Ever since I was a kid I had a genuine relationship with the anima, however with this work, I have understood her subtly and cheeky sarcasm. Thank you.
Thank you all! What Steve said about the “gravitational pull” and how a man seeking to help a woman can easily start to become the thing that a woman may be working against is something I’ve definitely experienced in my life. No matter how kind, sincere, loving, non-judging, etc. I know I am being, at times, it’s like I can sense when I’m almost being Rubix Cubed or transformed in the mind of a woman into something that doesn’t resemble who I am at all (unless I have a huge blind spot here). For the longest time, I took it personally and thought there was something wrong with me - almost self gaslighting myself. - Sure, there’s that reflective self-awareness that one could almost always have explained oneself better or presented oneself better or related a little better, but ultimately it seems like it’s often a phenomenon that as a man we just find ourselves in the midst of. I tried to explain the phenomenon to a dear woman I loved dearly, and she put the “devil horns” on me real quick. It was brutal. I thought she’d just understand and be logical, knowing how much I cared for her and had for so long. Instead she felt like I was secretly some sexist who had finally spilled the beans and revealed my “true” identity. To be honest I was still a bit confused on all of it, and was delving into some red pill notions, but my “idea” was that perhaps by discussing things we could understand what was happening between us better. If only I had know then, what I know now. But when a man first begins to walk out of the cave, it’s disorienting. I wasn’t exactly sure of what I was seeing, and it was surely upsetting to her to hear my best attempts at explaining this new glaring “thing” I was seeing. - Grateful to still be adjusting my eyes with the help of you all. 🙏

Great video as always! Pseudoandrogyny is quite an interesting concept indeed. Just for context, I am curious what you consider a feminized male persona. Is it referring to the kind of men who look down when they talk to you, who agree with every opinion and are easily suggestible, who feel they cannot assert themselves and their ideas directly in the world but get lost in their own philosophising and intellectualising and use covert passive-aggression to get what they want instead, the classic "nice guy" trope who turns out not to be as nice as he seems? Do "people pleasers" also fall into that "feminised male persona" category? Because instinctively, as nice as they are on the surface, I always feel I cannot trust people pleasers!
Hi @kylemuscat6392, the term was coined in the early 1980s before CSJ, and Wokeism, and referred to specific empirical and clinical observations, of psychosoical strategies, that extended along a spectrum of adaptation, from men towards women. Its a complex biospsychosocial dynamic, that persists, despite being somewhat obscured by the zeitgeist of the present day. Culture changes more quickly than biology, so deep-structure genomic patterns of adaptation, will persist and even survive the relatively brief turbulence of cultural change. The Pseudo Androgyny, is the Superpositioning of information, that is held innately as a psychosocial and biological strategy, to obtain status and resources. In relation to a potential female partner, for a hetero-normative biological male. its persisted long enough over human evolution, for it to become first an epigenome modification, and then much later, a truly genetic adaptation, favoured by natural selection, It can also disperse itself through a population. By ‘Morphic Resonance’ in behavioural-fields (Sheldrake). Kindest Regards, Steve
As a male, I have had the experience described in mins 24:00-26:00 in the video. I had a powerful and enigmatic art teacher for a few years who I “devoured.” I wanted to know everything he knew and soak up all he had to offer to a point where I started to feel kind of weird. It DID feel like a type of possession and made me feel like bit of a vampire. At the same time, I had paranoias about him that were unfounded. I would be SO grateful if someone could help me understand this in relation to Jungian psychology. Is it possible for a male to have a negative animus?
Check out Kendrick Lamar's All the Stars video. I hadnt realized just how much it is dripping with psychological goodness until I integrated... It would make a great talking point, like in this Kate Bush video!
I wondered about Athena - the Greek Goddess of war and the Amazon Women, the image of the Warrior woman in a very masculine way. What category do they fall into in relation to the Animus? Thanks
When you look into the middle eastern part of twitter, especially the gulf countries (Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE and such) you'll see how people would attack women who want to keep their femininity. They would call them "pick me" girls, which is another version of "internalized misogyny". Before I I got into JTLB I would be a part of these heated arguments on twitter but now all I do is observe.
Hi, @MRLITERALLYEPIC, thanks so much for the support you've given the channel over the past couple of years, its very much appreciated. Thank you too, for sharing your insights and experience. Respect to You, and for Your Journey, Kindest Regards, Steve & Pauline🙏🙏
Can a man and a woman be each other's Animus and anima? How is it different from a relationship where only the man is the animus of the woman or only her the anima of the man? Would such a relationship where both are each other's animus/anima hold a much stronger love and unbreakable bond?
They CAN…. It’s actually what “the one” narrative or “mirror soul” “twin flames” runs on. HOWEVER, since these Archetypes are the two that govern the COLLECTIVE UNCONSCIOUS it’s actually not normally a healthy relationship because it keeps one from true individuation. It’s not healthy to project it outside of Self: we just strive to take that power back for ourselves and balance the Inner Contrasexual with ourselves. Then our relationships will be healthier :) but projection of the Animus/Anima always happens
Would you say that being attracted--in the widest sense of that word--to someone is to activate the genetic component based in the archetype or is it the activation of the complex itself and its accumulated knowledge? In other words, if a female is attracted to you, would it be the animus complex or the archetype itself being activated, i.e., the complex or the genetic component?
I don't quite understand what you said when talking about the gay woman and about the relating function being independent of actual biologically driven sexuality, because I thought archetypes, including Anima and animus, are essentially expressions of your instincts and are thus biologically driven? What I was thinking could happen, is that you might consciously or unconsciously form an image of, or related to, your Anima/us and start identifying with it and thus feel attraction to the same sex in the way your animus would relate to it? Or otherwise be influenced by it in a way that will alter your sexuality, which is perhaps more complex driven and a distortion of your actual sexuality... As usual, very interesting and well presented.
Hi @dummeskind000, thank you for your comment. Jung's concept of the Anima and Animus, are specific, collapsed, representations, within the much wider relating function. The woman in the video, had her innate biological predispositions, both towards 'mating' and 'relating' but they were not in isomorphic relationship to one another i.e., they did not map onto each other, to the exclusion of alternative, variations. There are, of course, biological elements to the Relating Function (Anima/Animus) including what Jung called 'archetypes', that involve anticipations of psychosocial relationships, which emerge as narratives within culture. We consider these to be 'meta-instincts' which are, again, in part biological, but have psychosocial concomitant representation. The same 'information' exists, simultaneously, in different representational states (biopsychosocial) i.e., they are 'superpositioned' representations of the same information, as it develops, over the timed-release of life-span development. Jung divided his Anima/Animus into archetype and complex. We regard them as being part of the wider Relating Function, and Relating System, specified, representationally, and functionally, within the field of the informational wave-form, that makes up the biopsychosocial context of a human organism and its environment. The biological element is present, immediately, but so too are organising fields, that are 'informational', but not reducible to biology. They are co-present with it, but not collpased into it. The unfolding context of a human life is neither a biological, or a psychological reductionism. Reductionism, is scale invariant. Kindest Regards, Steve
@@JungToLiveBy Thanks for your answer. This stuff is so complex but that's what makes it so interesting. I will probably have to watch the episode on the quantum theory of complexes to better make sense of your reply, because I've never seen the mention of an 'informational wave form' in this context.
Hi, @dummeskind000, many thanks. Wave-Form collapse here means the collapse of the ‘Objective’ wave form (dynamical) of information, as a ‘field’, into representation, within simultaneous states, some of which, will be available to consciousness (the Ego). This is the ‘Subjective’ informational wave-form. It’s why we regard the ‘non-Ego conscious’ as being ‘un-conscious’ when it is really, a different qualia of consciousness, taken as ‘information’ (as in to ‘in-form’ or give representational form, to). Consciousness as information, within states of organisation and representation, is coherent with systems theory, field theories (Penrose-Hameroff, Sheldrake and Levin, as examples). Consciousness, as ‘the Ego’ of personal human reflexivity, is only one qualia of consciousness, and a very limited and fragile one, at that. Kindest Regards, Steve🙏
Great segment. Is it safe to say that the only way to understand the depth of how the Animus plays out in your life is through Psychotherapy and/or analysis? Also, is the integration of an inner male validated by an outside partnership? Also, would love to see a video on the concepts of Eros and Logos discussed within the analytical relationship and outside world. I know it was briefly mentioned but an in depth discussion would be awesome if possible. Thank you for this awesome channel.
Thank you! The animus arises in relationships and day to day interactions just as much, except there it's called 'normal'. In therapy you find a magic occurrence called the Transference, where the animus is much more easily observed in it's true character. A relationship with a man mirrors the internal unification, or dance, with the animus. As above so below, they're all reflections of each other. Thanks for the recommendation re Logos and Eros, I'll add it to the list!
After watching this video and thinking about my animus and my struggle with him, I had a dream in which I was kidnapped by a group of men and lived with them in one apartment. I was seductive as a way to survive but also control them but I actually fell in love with one of them, the nicest one, masculine, secure of himself, policeman. I liked the relationship we had because it felt equal, I wasn't suffocated, I could be active but at the same time I could depend on him when needed and vice versa. BUT whats the most interesting to me at least it's that the other man, womanizer, the "bad one" started to respect my boundries and although wanted to interrupt us, he stoped once I put a curtain between us (I was surprised in my dream that he didn't just cross it, it was literally like a line in sand). I often dream about being kindnapped by men, running from war, hiding from goverment, but I never dreamed about accepting one the man I'm running from and then gain respect from the rest of them
Hi Ichigo Senpai, thanks for sharing your dream experience. We'll follow up with some more videos on the Animus, would you be OK if we included your dream as a worked example of how it appears and functions in dreams? We would of course give a shout out to you in acknowledgement during the video. Kindest Regards, Steve.
Very enjoyable and informational discussion overall. However, I personally don't think it is appropriate to share so much information about client interactions, whether one is licensed or not. It just seems to me that material of this kind ought to be very generic so as not to breach confidentiality. Perhaps therapeutic codes of ethics are not as strict as they once were, but I have to say I felt uncomfortable with some of the more specific information shared in this one.
also it would be interesting to see if the anima/animus are different or changed when a man or woman consumes hormones to become the other sex, basically like contrapoints and the whole “oh gosh oh heck oh gosh” that she has today on her mind because at one time she had no sexual drive but then, as our dear depth psicologist said here, she started having a different sexual drive than when she had a “masculine” one very complex question indeed but also a very interesting one
@@darktrooper-ub6eo testosterone controls libido. everyone has testosterone. women have lower sex drives than men because of their low testosterone. when an FTM takes testosterone his libido is amplified, which can feel new and different to him. vice versa for trans women. transgender people do not become new people when taking hormones. what is commonly expressed is feeling 'more like themselves than ever,' since they already had the psyche of the opposite sex. the hormones give the ability for a transwoman's animus to function as it should, which grounds her in reality, and her psyche would no longer need to develop strategies such as dissociation to cope with the lack of estrogen. this is why hormone treatment is shown to be effective.
The anima/animus is a genetic pattern, which will remain unchanged through hormones. However, it may indeed be changed in terms of expression and polarity depending on biochemical alterations re HRT. I'm not aware of any research on it. Women, regardless of sexuality, have an animus, however.
I use the terms 'Anima and Animus' as they're conventional, but I regard both as expressions of the 'relating factor' rather than as anything that describes sexual orientation as such. Regarding sexual identity, again, I think of them as the relating factor, in the psyche, so the form it takes, can have any 'name' or 'gender' depending on the individual. O agree with Jung that 'Anything can be sexualised, but not everything, is sexual'. 'Relating' is something that can certainly involve sexuality, and more widely, eroticism, and this broader area is something we should look at in a podcast or podcast series.
I have a very crude question and it's exceptionally layman's terms to a degree. BUT. Let's suppose a woman has the built up image internally of how a man is meant to be eg, let's imagine she supposes him to be good around the house, in fact believes this to be the case however, her partner isn't he's more of creative easy going type guy and this creates an imbalance in the relationship from both the animus and anima perspective because he the male is unfulfilling an inner concept of the womens idea of man yet the male feels constantly harangued for just being himself by the female. This seems to me to ge an endless battle for both the man and the woman and it seems almost a cruel joke.
Hi again @paulmessis2094, it’s a common-enough situation. Part of the problem is the Palaeolithic Animus element, hasn’t kept pace with the adaptive evolution of (some) men. Similarly, the Palaeolithic Anima, element in (some) women, hasn’t kept pace with the idealised expectation (some) men have of the ‘Platonic’ form of the Anima. Darwin underpins all, match and mis-match. Kindest Regards, Steve 🙏

Thank you! Yes, that's a planned video; the original version of this podcast had a lot of their personal history in it. It's coming, just need to frame it appropriately :)
Thanks, we will certainly address your suggestions, glad you enjoyed this podcast, more coming!
YT is so possessed by the animus that the (four letter) strike force can't even see this. lol
Thank you for your content and for this video: it cleared up some confusion about the animus and in some part for me also the anima. Still a hard topic for me to wrap my head around but it sure is becoming more and more clear.
Just like everyone else who watches this: I've got some questions. (this might not be the place to ask it, probably in the discord but I don't have a credit card to gift via patreon)
Greetings! :)
Hey, thank you for these, and for your kind words. I've added them to the Q&A channel on the discord in case we have time to answer them! Cheers!
Many thanks, we'll look over the questions and do our best to include them, probably over a number of podcasts.
@@JungToLiveBy That's great! Many thanks kind sir! :)
@@JungToLiveBy Hey James, watching this video back after quite a while, is the Q&A mentioned here still on the discord?
Indeed it is, youre after the Merlin's Workshop tier on Patreon. Cheers, James
What good books / sources are there (besides Jung's works) to read more comprehensively about the anima/animus?
Great video, very informative. Thank you.
FANTASTIC, wonderful analysis.
Thank you!
Thanks Paul, glad you enjoyed it, we try to take it even further and deeper in the next video.
The blue beard myth is an awesome addition
Thank you!
Thanks Ethan, more on this in the next video too.
Great video! Will you continue your Dante series?
Hi again, @New Cures78, thanks once again for supporting pur channel. Thank you too, for sharing your experience. It wil lhelp a lot of people to have that lived example of someone engaging so honestly with themselves. Blessings and Respect, Steve & Pauline
- Thank you so much, Steve and Pauline. Although I don’t know you personally, your virtual support has been tremendously helpful. It’s hard to put into words how healing it is to be seen by you all. 🙏 - I know the comment and some of my other comments have been a bit long, and many I’ve just not posted because when I consider how to best relate, I see how context and the medium plays into it. I appreciate your acknowledgement of me and the suggestion that my engagement with myself can help others. I’m doing my very best to be honest with myself, always aware that there could be some part of myself that seeks to hide. - Most each day I watch one of your videos, and each day I feel like I’m becoming stronger and seeing more clearly, even as I pass thru some occasionally stormy internal weather. I feel increasing fortified (without hardening). Your content has been nourishment for my soul. Your time, your insights, and your encouragement are rivers of living water. Blessings and Namaste 🙏❤️
Blessings and Respect, @newcures7813, thanks you for the reciprocal blessing from you, in sharing your journey. Namaste, Steve & Pauline
Do Steve and Pauline have any other platforms and material out there to look at?
Thanks
In relation to a potential female partner, for a hetero-normative biological male. its persisted long enough over human evolution, for it to become first an epigenome modification, and then much later, a truly genetic adaptation, favoured by natural selection,
It can also disperse itself through a population.
Thanks for the recommendation, appreciate it!
Cathy Newman was annoyed with JP because of things he'd previously said though
I wondered about Athena - the Greek Goddess of war and the Amazon Women, the image of the Warrior woman in a very masculine way. What category do they fall into in relation to the Animus? Thanks
Hello Jimmy and all the boyos!
Hello :)
Jung To Live By I now have to watch this again because I started it last night but your dulcet tones lulled me into sleep 😴
Oh Love our Kate ❤️
Kate is fantastic, a true medium in the psychological sense
Jung To Live By She’s my mum in an alternate universe
She's a one-off with a wisdom beyond the usual.
Respect to You, and for Your Journey, Kindest Regards, Steve & Pauline🙏🙏
yo, how to get the shadow integration manual, added myself to the email list, but nowhere to be found?!
Hey! Reply to the email that went out and I'll send it to you! Cheers.
Pure gold
Blessings, Kindest Regards, Steve and Pauline🙏
Thanks V Lina, we address this in the next video, hope you enjoy it and find it interesting.
The key in Bluebeard probably has menstruation symbolism somewhere in there
Long live The Chad 'gorooo
Perhaps therapeutic codes of ethics are not as strict as they once were, but I have to say I felt uncomfortable with some of the more specific information shared in this one.
what is your discord?
also it would be interesting to see if the anima/animus are different or changed when a man or woman consumes hormones to become the other sex, basically like contrapoints and the whole “oh gosh oh heck oh gosh” that she has today on her mind because at one time she had no sexual drive but then, as our dear depth psicologist said here, she started having a different sexual drive than when she had a “masculine” one
very complex question indeed but also a very interesting one
Thanks! Its accessed via the Patreon, link in the description, for $5.
Guys, why do not you create a Discord channel for therapists?
It would be the Tower of Babel....
This episode moved very slowly.
